Flag - Flag - Pre-Federation Ensign Flag, c. 1880
... pre-federation ...The flag was donated by Mrs A. M. Mitchell Craigwood Convalescent Hospital Como WA "This flag was made by my Grandmother, Elizabeth Nicholls nee Tallack. It was used as a decoration to welcome Lord Hopeton (Hopetown) to Sandford sometime previous to 1883, when he was still a Viscount. I can't remember his name. No doubt Mr H.K. Kahan is no doubt quite correct in these dates and could find no record of the earlier visit. My mother Phillippa was a young girl at the time and sang at the concert in his honor "Will ye no come back again". It must have been before 1883 because in that year at the age of 18 she married. After the concert he asked that the young lady and her mother be presented. Next day he came to afternoon tea. A great honor in those days". Phillippa Tallack Nicholls was born 1865, Sandford, and married in 1883 to Patrick Maguire. (Digger Pioneer Index 1836 to 1888). There was a Royal Visit in 1881 by the Duke of Clarence and the Duke of York and their party to the district and this appears to be the visit that Mrs Mitchell is referring to. In 2005, Casterton and District Historical Society Inc. donated the flag to the Glenelg Shire Council Cultural Collection for the citizens of Casterton.Five 5-pointed stars forming the constellation of the Southern Cross on a field of royal blue. Painting - Oil on board, 'Jack Barker' by Geoff Mainwaring, 1987
Geoffrey MAINWARING (29 October 1912-13 April 2000) Born Adelaide South Australia Geoffrey Mainwaring studied at the South Australian School of Arts and Crafts before becoming an art teacher at Thebarton Technical School (1928-36). Mainwaring was adept at depicting a variety of subjects, from landscapes to portraits, and was very competent using a variety of media, including pencil, oils, and watercolour. He was a confident draftsperson, and completed many sensitively rendered portraits that give an insight into the character of the sitter. In June 1941 Geoffrey Mainwaring (SX13471) joined the 2nd Australian Imperial Force, and after five months was transferred to the Engineers and employed as a Sergeant-Instructor, specialising in demolitions. In late 1942, he was sent to New Guinea as an Australian army artist on probation. On 27 May 1947, Mainwaring was discharged from the Army, having served for five and a half years. He was appointed as an artist on a civilian basis until his paintings were completed in March 1948. In 1949 he was appointed Head of the Art School at the Ballarat School of Mines (now Federation University Australia). He continued to paint commissioned portraits for the Australian War Memorial until the late 1950s. Geoffrey Mainwaring died at Ballarat in April 2000. Royal Australian Nursing Federation campaign badge, [1986?]
Distributed to nurses during campaigning for improved wages and working conditions in the 1980s, probably during the historic 1986 Victorian 50-day nurses strike. The 'White' in 'WHITE LIES' refers to David Ronald White, who was a state M.P. and the Victorian Minister for Health from 1985-1989. David White regularly featured in Branch newsletters around the time of the strike, and was regularly portrayed as a magician, skilled in 'white magic' that made 'nurses wages disappear'. The Royal Australian Nursing Federation (RANF) became the Australian Nursing Federation in 1989, suggesting that this button is from the late 1980s.Circular blue and white plastic button. Sculpture - Artwork - Ceramic, 'Barbara' by Sarah Anderson, 2017
Sarah ANDERSON (1984- ) Born Ararat, Victoria Sarah Anderson is a ceramic artist currently completing her tertiary education at Federation University, and upon completion intends to study for a post-graduate teaching qualification. Influences on Sarah’s work range greatly, from historical Mexican tilework to delicate pinched porcelain sculpture. Barbara Hepworth, Constantin Brancusi and Jun Kaneko continue to be great sources of inspiration for Sarah’s final year of studies, for their challenging looks at shape, form and colour in their ceramic work. Sarah’s current ceramic practice involves exploring organic shapes in brightly coloured finishes. At once the shapes are earthy and vaguely figurative, an exploration of three dimensional shape and how our minds seek to align them with familiar forms. Her colour treatments are designed to create a dichotomy between shape and colour, inviting the viewer to apply their own meaning to the works. In future, Sarah hopes to combine her love for art history and education with her art practice in a fulfilling career. Sarah Anderson completed a Bachelor Visual Arts (Ceramics) at the Federation University Arts Acadamy in 2017. Three earthernware sculptures with mid-fired underglaze treatment. An airplant is attached to one of the items. This work won the 2017 Federation University 3D Art Acquisition award. On each base 'Sarah Anderson'sarah anderson, ceramics, sculpture, alumni, art acquisition award, available -

Distributed to nurses during campaigning for improved workloads and wages in the 1980s, possibly during the historic 1986 Victorian 50-day nurses strike. During the 1970s and 1980s, the state of Victoria had an acute nursing shortage, and patient workloads were unsafe. Throughout the 1980s, Victorian nurses took drastic industrial action to improve wages and conditions, culminating in the historic 50-day strike in 1986. Rolling papers are small sheets, rolls, or leaves of paper which are sold for rolling cigarettes either by hand or with a rolling machine. When rolling a cigarette, one fills the rolling paper with tobacco. Rolling papers are most commonly made with wood pulp, hemp, flax, or rice straw as a base material. 1860 Samuel Ramsden, a Yorkshire man, founded first paper mill in Victoria on the banks of the Yarra River, Fairfield, Melbourne. This was the Australian Paper and Pulp Company which for most of its history was called The Australian Paper Manufacturers Ltd. until it changed its name in 1986 to Amcor. Document - Invitation, Government of New South Wales, Commonwealth of Australia Inaugural Celebrations, Bef. 01-01-1901
This is an Invitation to attend the Inaugural Celebrations of the Commonwealth of Australia, to celebrate the Federation of Australia's united Colonies. It was created on behalf of the Government of New South Wales. January 1st, 1901, is the official date of Australia's Federation. There is no recipient's name on the invitation. The illustrations on the invitation represent the Federation of Australian States, with their historic symbols carried on the sailing ship, representing the colonisation of Australia. The 'rising sun' possibly represents the rising of the young Australia. The Sough Australian symbol appears to be the historic seal of South Australia, depicting Britania meeting an Australian Aboriginal seated on the beach. The symbol was replaced in 1904. The Victorian symbol of a crown above the Southern Cross appears on the flag at the back of the ship, with a crown and the Southern Cross beside each other. The invitation was originally framed by G.U. Petterd, a picture framer and plush worker in Warrnambool, Victoria. The invitation holds great significance, representing a point in Australia's history when the British Colony became an independent nation, with the states uniting under a Federal government. The symbols on the invitation represent those used by each state at the time, many of which have evolved and changed since that time. The decorative and careful creation of the certificate represents the importance placed on the celebrations.Invitation; rectangular page printed in colour with text and illustrations, and attached to cardboard. The document has a floral border with a symbol in each corner. The illustration includes a wooden sailing ship with six figures with long fair hair wearing white robes, and holding six flags or symbols. The mast holds a swallow-tailed banner showing a flag and text. The invitation is from the Government of New South Wales, for the recipient to attend the inaugural celebrations in Sydney on 1st January 1901, for the official date of the Federation of Australia. There is a purple oval stamp on the revers with inscriptions. The picture was originally framed by G.U. Petterd, WarrnamboolSTAMP: "G.U.
