WW1 AIF Light Horse Saddle (Martin Balsarini's, a Chiltern Resident). The Great War 1914-1918.This saddle belonged to Martin Balsarini, a soldier in the AIF WW1 4th Light Horse Brigade and who was at the Charge Of Beersheba. Dark Rum coloured leather saddle issued to WW1 soldier Martin Balsarini 4th Light Horse AIF. Saddle has cast iron stirrups x 2 with brass adjustment buckles. There is a restored leather rations barrel attached to the rear of the saddle. The saddle underlay is made of canvas and felt. Tripods similar to this were used in both WW1 and WW2. Note: Item 6482 is a Heliograph that was mounted onto a tripod such as this when it was used for surveying.Tripod with wooden legs painted in jungle green. The legs are attached to the apex with tarnished brass fittings, each secured with brass screws. Metal reinforcing plates protect the pointed end of each leg. A brass plate sits at the apex with a threaded rod positioned to allow the attachment of a heliograph or signal light. A khaki webbing shoulder strap for carrying the item is secured to one of the legs. At the bottom end of the strap is a webbing loop used to secure the tripod legs when closed. "Jack Lockett" was a local identity who lived to 111 years and was one of the last surviving WW1 Veteran. At his death he was the oldest man ever in Australia.Landscape photo of Jack Lockett in March 1999, at the age of 108, viewing the Presentation of his medal.
