On 26 August 1967 members of 5 Platoon, B Company, 7 RAR were lifted by United States Army Iroquois helicopters from their location beside the road leading to Dat Do, and returned to their base at Nui Dat in Phuoc Tuy Province. These soldiers had completed the cordon and search of the village of Phuoc Hai, part of Operation Ulmarra. This iconic image is etched on the Vietnam Veteran's Memorial on Anzac parade in Canberra. Warrant Officer Class Two Bill Woolford served with the Royal Marines during World War Two. Following the war he served in Hong Kong before migrating to Australia in the 1950s. He joined the Victorian Police and was posted to Wodonga. There he joined 8/13 Victorian Mounted Rifles serving as Squadron Sergeant Major until his retirement in 1967. This tankard was presented to him on his retirement. This item is from the private collection of George Shirling of Red Onion, Falls Creek. It is from the Australian Ski Yearbook of 1967 reporting on the visit of the Austrian National Ski team to Falls Creek in winter of 1966. George Shirling arrived in Falls Creek in 1962. He engaged Phil Nowell to build the original Koki Alpine Lodge which opened in 1965 with 14 beds. George operated the lodge with Michael “Baldy” Blackwell as manager. He also graduated in sport psychology in 1981 and was invited to become team psychologist for the Australian Winter Olympic team which went to Albertville, France, in 1992. He later owned the Red Onion Chalet. George credited the success of Koki to “Baldy” Blackwell. “Baldy” and Phil Nowell started the Trackers Mountain Lodge in partnership during the 1980s. In 1971 George sold Koki Lodge to Sigi Doerr. In 2024 the renamed Koki Alpine resort remains a highly popular destination in Falls Creek. George Shirling passed away on 27th February 2023. Keith Pither was born at Shepparton in 1914 and grew up on a farm. Attended Otira Methodist Home Mission Training College from 1936 and by 1939 was a probation minister at Burnie (Tas.). Enlisted in the army 1939 and served in the Middle East and Northern Australia. In 1943 he was ordained in the field as a chaplain and later served in New Guinea. Married Allison (Alison?) Brown in 1945 and they had four children, Brian, Rhonda, Andrew and Howard. Completed his studies at Melbourne University 1946. Placements were Red Cliffs, Carlton Methodist Mission, Benalla, Portland, Sandringham and Ivanhoe. Died 19/6/2008.The Pithers are holding a knife about to cut an anniversary cake."Rev. K. M.
