A press release from Melbourne Legacy in 1975 which relates a story of how Legacy works. The information was intended to be used by press and magazines etc. The title 'With Legacy's Help. It seemed like a miracle - just like having an invisible Mother and Father' and is about a young girl 'Betty' whose parents died leaving her in charge of three younger siblings. It dramatically changed her career prospects and struggled to care for them on her own. Since her father was a returned serviceman Betty contacted Legacy, and from then on it seemed like an invisible mother and father. This item came from the estate of Dorothy and Agnes Ardlie of Warrnambool. It is a type of autograph book where the signatures are used to form inkblots, thus creating patterns which in this case are called the ‘ghosts’ of those signing. The making and interpreting of ink blots became popular in the late 19th century and this autograph book created by Cecil Henland is a quirky example of this craze. The autograph book belonged to Agnes Ardlie and was apparently given to her on her 13th birthday (1928). Dorothy Ardlie (1910-1993) and Agnes Ardlie (1915-1993) were the daughters of Arthur and Ethel Ardlie of Warrnambool, the granddaughters of the prominent Warrnambool lawyer, William Ardlie and his wife Mary and the great granddaughters of John and Mary Ardlie, pioneer settlers in Warrnambool. This book is of great interest as a good example of an early 20th century style of autograph book using the signatures to form ink blots. It also has local provenance as the signatures/blots are mostly those of an Ardlie family and other early to mid 20th century Warrnambool personalities.This is a book of 50 pages. The cover is dark red with the inkblot or ‘ghost of a celebrated general’ in black and white in the middle of the front cover. This inkblot is reprinted on the second page. The front cover and spine have gold printing. The book originally had 48 blank pages with a fold down the middle and printed space at the top and bottom for a date and a name. This book has 19 blank pages and the others are filled with ink blots formed by writing a signature along the fold and then folding over the sheet without blotting to get patterns called in this book, ‘ghosts’. The book has a signature and an inscription handwritten in black ink, a page of instructions, and a poem called ‘Ghosts’. The Gregory Hall was built on the grounds of All Saints Uniting Church, Chapel Street, East St Kilda in 1910-11. It was used for assemblies and classes at the All Saints' Grammar School which, after faltering fortunes, closed in1937. It was then leased to Zercho's Business College, founded in 1911 by Frederick William Zercho (the brother of Charles Henry Zercho, who was headmaster of the All Saints Grammar School in 1913-1919). The certificate, dated 16 August 1938, is a birthday greeting addressed to F. W. Zercho that also acknowledges one year since the establishment of the Gregory Hall branch of the college. It is signed by the headmistress, staff and students. Zercho's Business College became the largest business college in Australia. In 1968 it was sold to Stott's Business College.Two page certificate in leather bound folder: two sheets of white paper, handwritten and decorated with ink of multiple colours and each affixed to a board. The boards are covered with blue-dyed leather, decorated with gold ink, and were once joined together to form an outer cover for the pages. One sheet carries on one side a message to FW Zercho Esq that has been written in decorative calligraphy, and signatures. The "letters to Lillie" show the international nature of the Mission to Seafarers. They are an important display of the handwriting style of the time, revealing courting attempts and give us an insight into life in 1925.Lillie Duncan was a member of the Harbour Lights Guild and this letter forms part of a collection of letters sent to her by different seafarers.Letter addressed to Miss L Duncan, 11 Paxton St, East Malvern, Melbourne, Australia from Howard in four parts: Part 1.1 (0008.1) Envelope Part 1.2 (0008.2) First page of letter Part 1.3 (0008.3) Second page of letter Part 1.4 (0008.4) Third page of letter The envelope is blue grey in colour whilst the pages are creamy yellow in colour. Page 1 of the letter begins with the salutation "My dear Lillie, here comes the promised letter...". Page 2 of the letter begins with "...in her birthday book". Page 3 of the letter concludes with "...yours Joe".The envelope is torn across the top for access to its contents. It has two stamps, a circular one in black ink towards the top left of the envelope reading "Durban, 2, May 21, 5.45AM, 1925", and a rectangular one coloured red and white reading "Union of South Africa, Postage, 2d" on the left-hand side of the circle and the right-hand side circle seems to say the same in South African perhaps. It is obscured by 6 large ink lines covering the top portion of the envelope from left to right. Within the circle is a mans head showing his left side profile. He has a beard and short hair. The Argus was a morning daily newspaper in Melbourne that was established in 1846 and closed in 1957 and was considered to be the general Australian newspaper of record for this period. Widely known as a conservative newspaper for most of its history. George VI became King after his brother, King Edward VIII, abdicated in 1936. The coronation of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth as King and Queen of the United Kingdom and the Dominions of the British Commonwealth and as Emperor and Empress of India took place at Westminster Abbey, London, on 12 May 1937. King George ascended the throne upon the abdication of his brother, King Edward VIII, on 10 December 1936, three days before his 41st birthday. Edward's coronation had been planned for 12 May 1937 and it was decided to continue with his brother and sister-in-law's coronation on the same date. This newspaper provides a detailed pictorial representation of the coronation of King George V1 in London on 12 May, 1937. The commonwealth countries, including Australia joined in the celebration. Thomas Stoddart (1828 - 1905) bought 12 white marble statues during a visit to Italy. Stoddart arranged for them to be shipped to Victoria and placed on pedestals of Sicilian marble and on bases of Victorian granite. These statues were unveiled in the gardens on Queen Victoria's birthday, 24th May, 1884. His intention was for the statues to adorn and add interest to the gardens. Roman goddess of flowers is watering flowers at her feet and is dressed in a classical garment. Flora is considered by many to be the masterpiece of the twelve because of the fi ne detail which creates such a pretty picture in stone. This portrayal of the Roman goddess of flowers shows her watering a pot of luscious blooms with a basket of flowers on her arm. Hilda Elizabeth Foster (1890-1982) was commissioned as a Deaconess in 1914 giving a lifetime of service to the church particularly in the social care aspect of the Gospel. She was also a double certified nurse. Deaconess Hilda Foster began her work as a Deaconess in South Melbourne and then served for 13 years with the Presbyterian Sisterhood in North Fitzroy caring for unmarried mothers and their babies. In 1933 she was appointed Matron of the Presbyterian Girls' Home in Elsternwick where she worked for 15 years. She retired in 1948 when it was noted "In complete dedication matron has given herself to this care of souls".
