Minute Book, Minute Book 1936-42, Early 20th century
This is an exercise book containing the Minutes of the Boomerang Club from 1936 to 1942. The Boomerang Club was a Warrnambool social club that was formed some time in 1934 and continued until at least 1956. By the late 1930s there were nearly 200 members who took part in activities that included dinners, balls, dances, Christmas parties and picnics. Profits from the Boomerang Club functions were donated to local charitable organizations. This is a significant item as the Boomerang Club was an important social group in Warrnambool in the mid 20th century. This is an exercise book with a black cardboard cover taped at the spine. The pages in the book are lined in blue and the entries are handwritten in blue and green ink. The cover is stained and blotched. There is a white sticker on the front with the contents listed. WW2 Medal for Women relatives of serving soldiers, 1942
Female Relative Badges were issued to the nearest female relative (usually wives or mothers) of those who engaged in active service overseas during the First and Second World Wars. For active service abroad during the Second World War, a single badge was issued to the nearest female relative of members of the RAN, the Australian Imperial Force (including members of the Australian Army Nursing Service), and the Royal Australian Air Force. Stars displayed on a bar suspended below the badge represented the number of relatives involved in the war effort. Authority for the issue of the badge was given under AIF Order 200,14 February 1941. This medal was given to Veronica ( White ) Roper in 1942 because her husband Alfred William Roper was a member of the Australian Army Signals Corp serving in New Guinea. Emma Olymphia Roper of Balaclava/ Ripponlea would also have received a medal like this with 4 four stars because her 4 sons were serving in the Australian Army 1939-45 This Military Medal was given to the wives and mothers of Australian Soldiers serving during World War 2 1939-1945Silver medal, engraved wreath of leaves, crown and map of Australia and pin clasp on back . This battery treminal was removed from one of the Japanese Midget Submarines sunk in Sydney Harbour during the night attack on Sunday 31st May 1942 and sold publicly as a souvenir to raise money for the RAN relief funds for sailors. Metal plate - two round black metal lugs on top of a flat grey lead plate with four Japanese characters stamped on the base off the top of a battery from a Midget Submarine, with a cardboard souvenir card.Metal Plate - four Japanese characters. Framed photograph of the history of H.M.A.S Australia 1928 - 1954. H.M.A.S Australia was one of three County Class Heavy Cruisers that served with the R.A.N during World War 2.The other 2 being H.M.A.S Canberra and H.M.S Shropshire. Canberra was sunk on the 9th August 1942 at the battle of Savo. H.M.A.S Australia had a length of 192.13M - a beam of 20.8M - a draught of 6.5M. She had a top speed 0f 31 knots (57 km/h) or 36 mph. The British Government donated H.M.S Shropshire to replace Australia. Australia's Battle Honours include Atlantic 1940-41 Pacific 1941-43.Coral Sea 1942- Savo Island 1942- Guadalcanal 1942 - New Guinea 1942-44 - Leyte Gulf 1945 Lingayan Gulf 1945. H.M.A.S Australia was commissioned on 24/04/1928 and paid off on the 31/08/1954. She was broken up in Britain in1956.See description. -
