Box is from Cramond & Dickson store in Warrnambool. Cramond and Dickson migrated from Scotland to Melbourne where they opened a Cramond and Dickson store in St Kilda in 1852. They were inspired by the growth in Warrnambool after a visit and established their second store there as Cramond and Dickson, direct importers and drapers, in 1855. In 1856 they opened a store on the corner of Liebig and Timor Streets, Warrnambool. They extended their premises in Liebig Street in 1859, and then in Timor Street in 1859. There were further additions and improvements in 1889 and they continued to trade until 1973 (now the site of a Mexican restaurant). An advertisement placed by Cramond and Dickson in The Camperdown Chronicle, Saturday 6th April 1895, states them “showing the latest novelties for the coming winter season” … “import directly from English and Continental manufacturers” … “representatives in London … always in touch with the Newest Continental Fashions” ... “having been established for so many years we know the requirements of the Western District”… “allow 5 per cent discount on goods paid for at the time of purchase”.The hat box is important for is connection with the local business store, Cramond and Dickson. The store traded for over 100 years; 1856-1973. The strong, sturdy hat box indicates its purpose was for travel luggage, providing protection for the fashionable women's headwear of the era.Metal bonnet box or hat box, round shape, coloured brown. The bride entered the drawing room with her father who gave her away, and the Wedding March, was nicely played by Miss Wild. Between forty and fifty relatives and friends partook of a bountifully provided and nicely laid out breakfast. The usual toasts were honored, and congratulations were freely tendered "to the happy couple". The decorations were very tastefully executed by Miss Beatrice Nelson, and Mr Sayers. Frederick Steele Ferguson (1861-1938) married Beatrice O'Brien in 1898. Originally they lived at 19 Brodie Street, Quarry Hill, but by 1925 they were registered as living on the corner of Rodney and Reginald Street with their son Frederick Steele McNair Ferguson and his wife Amelia, and later with their daughter Maude. It appears the family continued to live at this address following Frederick snrs death. The Red Ribbon Movement of 1853 represented a significant series of events in the history of Bendigo. During that year there was much agitation on the Bendigo gold fields, particularly during July and August of 1853, directed against the payment of what the miners called a tax - a licence fee of thirty shillings ($3) a month for the right to search for gold on what was declared Crown land. They had to pay the licence whether they found gold or not. The miners, or diggers as they were called, also resented the means used by the authorities at the time to collect the gold licence - through so-called 'digger hunts'. The miners were expected to carry their licences with them, and the police, who were often untrained, used harsh methods to check these licences. In Bendigo, the miners took to wearing a red ribbon ‘as a symbol of their protest against the licence. Red was a very common colour in items such as shirts, so was readily available. Shopkeepers too tied red ribbons to their premises as a sign of support for the miners. It should be remembered at that time virtually everyone was a miner. The diggers also had their own banner, designed by William Dexter, a china painter from Devon. This flag showed the pick, shovel and cradle representing labour, the scales representing justice, the Roman bundle of sticks meaning unity and the kangaroo and emu of Australia Many thousands of Bendigo miners signed a petition to La Trobe, the Governor of Victoria, protesting against the licence fee. When the Governor rejected the petition, thousands of diggers marched in peaceful protest. Miners from White Hills, Eaglehawk, Golden Square, Kangaroo Flat as well as from Bendigo Flat, converged on what is now Pall Mall and View Point, surrounding the ~government camp on Camp Hill. The camp had been reinforced with soldiers of the 40 Regiment, as the Government feared bloodshed. The miners then gathered on the hill behind View Point to hear from their leaders - among them George Thomson, Captain Harrison, Captain Brown and W.D.C. Denovan. They resolved to pay a token fee often shillings ($1) for the September licence, whenthey met with Commissioners Panton and Wright on Camp Hill. Although Wright and Panton were sympathetic to the miners, the offer was rejected, but no licence fees were collected for September. Thus a possible bloody conflict was averted by the common sense shown by the miners' leaders and the commissioners. It was a truly democratic protest against arbitrary government and preceded the Eureka Stockade Incident by over a year. A baleen whale has hard bristly baleen that hangs from its upper jaw inside its mouth instead of teeth. Baleen is made from a protein called keratin, just like human hair and fingernails, and its colour can vary between species, from black to yellow or white. The whale uses the tough, flexible baleen like a sieve to catch its food, filtering the small sea creatures out of the sea water it releases from its mouth. In the19th Century, whales were hunted for the products that could be made from their bodies, such as oil for lubricating machinery, soap making, lamps, heaters and fuel for the lighthouse lights. The flexible baleen was used for whip handles, carriage springs and umbrella ribs. It was also used for the skirt hoops, hat ribs, and rigid ‘stays’ in tightly fitting bodices to enhance their figures. The Southern Right Whales, as well as Blue Whales and Humpback Whales, are baleen whales. The Southern Rights annually visit the ocean off the southwest coast during the breeding season. In the early 1800s whalers hunted along this coastline in their dangerous pursuit of money for the precious cargoes of whale oil and bones. The population of these large animals dwindled quickly and by the late 1840s the whaling industry dwindled. Whaling recommenced from the 1940s to the 1980s when the whale products were used to make margarine and dog food. The baleen sample has been used to educate people about whaling and about the properties of baleen. The baleen sample is significant for its association with 19th century women's fashion. It helps to understand how garments were supported to shape a woman's figure. The baleen sample represents a period when whales were hunted and killed to provide income and products for for the local settlers and for the export industry.Baleen sample from a whale's jaw. Ramon (Ray) Francis Honisett (11.04.1931 - 30.08.2019), Fellow RMIT and medallist specialised in philatelic design, marine and military aircraft painting art and was active in the 1960s - 1990s. Ray Honisett used to live in Rye, in the Mornington Peninsula. According to Gavin Fry's book: The painting likely depicts the Lysaght Endeavour loading at Hastings. "The Lysaght Endeavour and its sister ship Lysaght Entreprise were built in Newcastle in 1973 specifically to serve the regional steel industry on the route Port Kembla - Westernport - Adelaide. Even after being lengthened by 17 metres, the two ships had remarkably short working lines, with both being broken up by 1988."Maritime artLarge framed unglazed landscape format painting predominantly green depicting in foreground a merchant vessel, a roll-on roll-off cargo ship moored at a single quayside on a river or river mouth. The middle ground shows a moderate solid jetty leading to large storage sheds at right. The background appears primarily rural with fields and hills in the distance. You can see the rolls of steel lined up on the hard stand to the right of the ship. The funnel colours suggest the Australian National Line. The frame incorporates a beige fabric slip with gilt edge the actual dark wood frame also with inset banded gilt edge. The back of the painting is covered with brown paper in places damaged. This map from the mid-18th century doesn't include the finer details of land and sea masses that we know today. The map was produced by German cartographer and publisher, Johann Baptist Homann (1663-1724) and published in 1746, after his death. Earlier versions were published, such as 1707 and 1716. The date can be calculated from the Roman numerals on the top left text area. This print of a map is significant for its connection with early world explorers. A comparison of maps over the centuries shows the progression of navigational technology, the countries who claimed the land they explored. The naming of even some Australian locations shows who had already made their mark on Australia in the early 18th century. The print shows the fine details included by the cartographer and the beauty included that makes it attractive and interesting even today. The map is also significant for its connection with German cartographer, Johann Baptist Homann, whose Homann publishing company was renewed in Germany for producing high quality maps and atlases. Sphalerite or sphaelerite is named from the Greek word for 'treacherous' or 'deceiver' as specimens can vary widely in appearance, making them hard to visually identify. It is a zinc sulfide with the chemical composition (Zn,Fe)S, the most important ore of zinc. Specimens of sphalerite can contain iron as a substitute for up to 25% of the usual zinc present, as well as trace elements of gallium, cadmium, geranium and indium. Small amounts of arsenic and manganese may also be detected. Sphalerite is found in igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic rocks. It forms when carbonate rock encounters acidic, zinc-bearing fluid. It often forms in veins or in fissures of the existing rock, with colours and crystal shapes dependent on the composition of the the combining elements. It forms isometric crystal shapes including cubes, tetrahedrons, octahedrons, dodecahedrons. This specimen was collected in approximately 1852, in Broken Hill, NSW, as an adjunct to the Geological Survey of Victoria. It was donated to the Museum in 1868. Victoria and other regions of Australia were surveyed for sites of potential mineral wealth throughout the 19th Century. The identification of sites containing valuable commodities such as gold, iron ore and gemstones in a locality had the potential to shape the development and history of communities and industries in the area. The discovery of gold in Victoria, for instance, had a significant influence on the development of the area now known as 'the goldfields', including Beechworth; the city of Melbourne and Victoria as a whole.The specimen is significant as an examples of surveying activity undertaken to assess and direct the development of the mineral resource industries in Victoria and Australia, as well as the movement to expand human knowledge of earth sciences such as mineralogy and geology in the nineteenth century.A pipe-shaped specimen of sulfide-mineral zinc ore displaying patches of black, brown, beige and gold colouring. Electro hydraulic dredge Snake Valley 1909. J Mc Bennett, was an engineer back at the main base, at Dawson's dam on the Carngham Road, Between Linton and Snake Valley. These dredges were used for getting gold. The streams of water under high pressure just washed the hills and ground away. Image mounted on dark brown card. Between 1904 and 1911 the Electro Hydraulic Company sought to extract gold in an area north of Linton known as the Hard Hills. By blasting water from high-pressure hoses into the hillsides, soil containing gold was washed out for sluicing. Two gravel pumps in Dawson's Dam pumped the wash through the sluices.
