Edison Records was one of the early record labels that pioneered sound recording and reproduction, and was an important player in the early recording industry. The first phonograph cylinders were manufactured in 1888, followed by Edison's foundation of the Edison Phonograph Company in the same year. The recorded wax cylinders, later replaced by Blue Amberol cylinders, and vertical-cut Diamond Discs, were manufactured by Edison's National Phonograph Company from 1896 on, reorganized as Thomas A. Edison, Inc. in 1911. Until 1910 the recordings did not carry the names of the artists. The company began to lag behind its rivals in the 1920s, both technically and in the popularity of its artists, and halted production of recordings in 1929. Thomas A. Edison invented the phonograph, the first device for recording and playing back sound, in 1877. After patenting the invention and benefiting from the publicity and acclaim it received, Edison and his laboratory turned their attention to the commercial development of electric lighting, playing no further role in the development of the phonograph for nearly a decade. Start of the Recording Industry: In 1887, Edison turned his attention back to improving the phonograph and the phonograph cylinder. The following year, the Edison company introduced the ”Perfected Phonograph”. Edison introduced wax cylinders approximately 4+1⁄4 inches (11 cm) long and 2+1⁄4 inches (5.7 cm) in external diameter, which became the industry standard. They had a maximum playing time of about 3 minutes at 120 RPM, but around the turn of the century the standard speed was increased to (first 144) and then 160 RPM to improve clarity and volume, reducing the maximum to about 2 minutes and 15 seconds. Several experimental wax cylinder recordings of music and speech made in 1888 still exist. The wax entertainment cylinder made its commercial debut in 1889 at first, the only customers were entrepreneurs who installed nickel-in-the-slot phonographs in amusement arcades, saloons and other public places. At that time, a phonograph cost the equivalent of several months' wages for the average worker and was driven by an electric motor powered by hazardous, high-maintenance wet cell batteries. After more affordable spring-motor-driven phonographs designed for home use were introduced in 1895, the industry of producing recorded entertainment cylinders for sale to the general public began in earnest. Blank records were an important part of the business early on. Most phonographs had or could be fitted with attachments for the users to make their own recordings. One important early use, in line with the original term for a phonograph as a "talking machine", was in business for recording dictation. Attachments were added to facilitate starting, stopping, and skipping back the recording for dictation and playback by stenographers. The business phonograph eventually evolved into a separate device from the home entertainment phonograph. Edison's brand of business phonograph was called the Ediphone. The collection of three phonograph cylinders are an example of early recorded music use for domestic entertainment. 3269.1 - BTPS membership card for year ending 30 May 1976. Printed in green ink on off white card, featuring the name of the organisation with the word "limited" hand stamped on, membership number, signature space and a side on image of No. 14. Date hand stamped on in green ink and membership number stamped in black ink. Card made out to Mrs. C. Dean, No. 192 in handwriting and signed by Carolyn Dean. 3269.2 - ditto, but with membership No. 42 - the correct ones! 3269.3 - ditto for the year ended 30th June 1977. "Limited" in black ink and other details typed on. 3269.4 - ditto for period to 14-7-1976 for Warren Doubleday, given number 005, which was later revised - card added 4-1-2014. 3269.5 - as for .4, but with revised Membership Number. Prepared by McCarty Underwood & Co. Consulting Engineers 31 Queen St Melbourne. Document originally printed for the first contract for tramcar bodies. This document has been changed as a result of negotiations by Duncan and Fraser and the HTT, which have been initially by both parties. Contains completed tender forms, prices and some minor initialled alterations to the tender. The document is the HTT or Trusts copy of the tender and it has been signed by Duncan and Fraser and the HTT and on the rear sheet has the seal of the Trust. Gives prices and dates for delivery of 8 bogie and 7 combination (4 wheel) tramcar bodies. .2 - letter - typed on quarto paper - two sheets - from Duncan & Fraser dated 10/7/1916 advising of changes in materials and equipment that was being offered, partly due to availability due to World War 1. Set of 6 printed financial reports for The Melbourne Tramways Trust, giving Liabilities and Assets, Sinking Fund and interest transactions for the half year end, and statement of receipts, statement of Receipts and expenditure. Signed by the Treasurer R. Wallace and the auditor C. W. Ellis and dated. All have been stored folded in half vertically. .1 - 31st March 1901 - has dirt marks, stains, edge damage and very dirty on rear. .2 - 30th September 1901 - has stain marks, edge damage, bottom right hand corner has been folded. .3 - 31st March 1902 - has one stain, top edge damaged, dirt marks on rear, bottom right hand corner folded. .4 - 30th September 1902 - has two stains, dirt marks on rear. .5 - 31st March 1903 - has minor fading around edges. Flag that could be mounted on wooden dowel for use on Melbourne tramcars. Flag made from nylon or a similar synthetic, sewn into a white nylon circular section and then slipped over the dowel and stapled into position with words "100 years of trams". Appears to have been unused. Features a bogie cable tram set and a Z3 class tram with a Met logo. c November 1985 Two copies held. Second copy has a black broken line on the left hand edge indicating possibly where staples were to be inserted. Destination indicator equipment that was fitted to a C class tram - dot matrix style, set to the word "CITADIS" with inbuilt control equipment and computer control plugs. Installed within a metal box, with detailed wiring, plastic components and electrical components. Has a loose wire with two pin plug in the bottom left hand corner of the unit. Set of two, Photograph, Black and White of MMTB (G), Q 190 at Camberwell Depot and the Drivers Instruction Car. .1 - Has depot on the background, dated 24/8/1955 - has number WJN or WJW 208 in top right hand corner. .2 - on the depot fan, dated 4/1949, with a note that it was still painted in old chocolate and cream livery. Has number CLC29 in top right hand corner. Titled "Instruction Pamphlet S-100, Air Brake and Safety Car Control Equipment", published July 1924 by the Safety Car Devices Co. St Louis. Includes the M28 Brake valve. Describes in detail the rules for operation, parts, description, M28 Brake Valves, Maintenance, Practical car tests, hints, defects. The 9 drawings at the rear of the document give detail arrangements of the piping and control equipment. Book scanned into three sections.
