bottle
Glass milk bottles were used to store milk that was supplied by local vendors to houses in a region. The glass bottles would be reused continually until stolen or broken. Milk would be brought to individual houses where payment may be received on the day or as a larger payment at another time. After finishing the milk, the family would return the glass to a prearranged place outside their home where it would be collected and a new milk bottle returned in its place. Domestic object - Cooler
Terra cotta is the perfect medium to manufacture items for keeping foods and liquids cool. When water is added to the base, the terra cotta body absorbs it and the subsequent evaporation creates a cooling effect for the contents. It is particularly effective when used to keep milk, cheese, butter and bottles of wine cool.Terra cotta was one of the first ceramic materials to be used.Terra cotta cooler, with bell shaped lid that is open at the top, but with a rim for holding water. There are ventilation holes around the base of the lid. The top stands inside the base. When water is added to the rim at the top, the terra cotta body absorbs it and creates a cooling effect for the contents. Book, The Journal of the Department of Agriculture of Vic 1902, 1902
This booklet has been produced in April 1902 for the Government of Victoria under the direction of the Minister for Agriculture, Hon John Morrissey M.L.A. It contains articles on agriculture in Victoria, including the dairying industry in the Western District. This journal is of some interest because of the photographs and information on dairying in the Western District in the early 20th century, including dairy inspection, milking controls in Koroit, prize-winning cows at Koroit and dairy bacteriology. This is a soft cover booklet of 102 pages - pages 350 to 452 of Part 4 of a journal published regularly (monthly?). The back cover is missing. The front cover is black and white and has an inset of a photograph showing wheat harvesting. The booklet is bound with cotton thread and shows rust where the thread is tied, perhaps from metal staples now removed. The cover has a slight tear and there is some staining throughout the pages. The booklet contains maps, diagrams, sketches and black and white photographs. dairying in the western district, koroit dairying, warrnambool history -

Photograph- Paddy Fisher's truck at Tawonga, 13th Dec. 1969
The Hallford truck was made by J & E Hall, of Dartford, England, whose business commenced in 1785. In 1926 the Fisher family of Mongan's Bridge took delivery of the 1923 Hallford truck which was used on the farm to transport cream to the Kiewa Butter Factory in Tangambalanga. In 1967, the truck was sold to Mr Greg Bedstead and other members of the Kiewa Valley Historical Society for the KVHS who reimbursed them at a later date. The truck was housed at the Butter Factory for many years and was paraded on special occasions. Photograph shows truck parked outside the original Kiewa Valley Historical Museum which was located at Tawonga Caravan Park and was later relocated to its current location at the Mt Beauty Information Centre. This truck was used to transport cream to the Kiewa Butter Factory from the Fisher family's dairy farm at Mongan's Bridge. At other times a tyre was removed and a belt attached to run a chaff cutter. This truck has historical significance as it is presentative of vehicles which were used by farmers to transport cream to the butter factories by a local family. Furthermore, it has social significance as KVHS members combined their finances to purchase this truck so it would be part of our collection. It is well provenanced and has an excellent interpretive capacity.Black and white photograph of Paddy Fisher's truck on a flat bed truck, outside the original Kiewa Valley Historical MuseumSmall typed tag on back of photo 'Paddy fisher's truck taken at Tawonga Caravan Park 13th December, 1969'hallford truck, fisher family, kiewa valley farmers, mongan's bridge, cream truck -

Pat Butter - pair
This type of butter mould was used by rural families in the Kiewa Valley to fashion/shape home/farm made butter either for domestic use or to sell locally.Kiewa Valley was a dairying district with many farms in remote locations especially before the State Electricity Commission of Victoria built the Kiewa Hydro Electric Scheme from the 1940's. This pair of butter pats have been crafted from wood. One has one side with grooves running from the handle to the tip of the rectangle. the other side is smooth. These grooves would stop the wet butter from clinging to the pat. The top side of the pat has been bevelled. The second pat is longer and wider without grooves along the handle. This one also has 3 arrows on the handle pointing down towards the handle end and isn't bevelled. 3 arrows.kiewa valley. butter pat. farm produce. domestic produce. dairy. farms -

Slides, Box of Glass Slides Capital Theatre, 1940s
These glass slides were made to be used at interval time at the Capitol Theatre in Kepler Street, Warrnambool. The Capitol Theatre (originally the Warrnambool Theatre) was erected in 1930 on the site occupied by the Hotel Mansions which included a Palais de Danse and a Mansions Theatre. All were destroyed by fire in 1929. The Capitol Theatre was built in the Spanish Mission style and is one of the few surviving Spanish Mission style theatres in Victoria. However the interior was largely altered in 1994 when the Capitol was converted into a three-screen complex. But some decorative features of the old interior were kept and these included the original proscenium. Stan Stevens and his family were associated with the Capitol Theatre management for many years from 1972. The Capitol Theatre still operates today. These slides are of considerable importance as they are a wonderful example of picture theatre-going in the 1940s and 50s when slides were shown during the interval times and many of these were locally made. The reason for showing the words of songs is not known but it is presumed they had sing-a-longs during the intervals, possibly to boost morale during the days of World War Two. The advertising slides are of particular interest and feature such local businesses as the Woollen Mill, Sungold Dairies, E.A. Wright Motors and Alex Donaldson Timber and Hardware Supplies. These are small square glass slides (numbered1 to 92) which were shown in the 1940s at the Capitol Theatre in Warrnambool at interval time (advertisements, words of songs etc). Some of the slides have been professionally produced and some, especially the words of songs, have been hand-made and handwritten or typed. Some are in colour and some are blank. In others the contents have been obscured or obliterated. Most of the slides have been taped around the edges and some have more sturdy frames made of tape. capitol theatre, warrnambool, stan stevens -

Document - Documents (3) of Farnham Cheese and Butter factory, 1890s (originals)
These three sheets are copies of the originals and relate to the establishment of the Farnham Cheese and Butter Factory in Dennington (Warrnambool). The name 'Farnham' is the name of the Special Survey in the area first purchased by William Rutledge and also the name of the Rutledge property at Dennington. In 1889 WIlliam Rutledge (Junior) and Thomas Palmer established the Farnham Cheese and Butter Factory on the banks of the Merri River at Dennington. In 1890 they sold the factory to a farmers' co-operative. Farnham had a high reputationfor butter=making when the factory was in existence. The factory was bought out by Nestles about 1909 with that company establishing its factory on the same area.in 1911. These documents are of interest as the Farnham Cheese and Butter Factory was one of the earliest of its type in the Western District and won a Gold Medal in 1909 for butter-making at the Islington Dairy Show in competition with other butter-making countries in the world..1 sheet of paper with black and white map showing location of factory in Dennington (copy) .2 An A3 size piece of paper with a sketch map and typed material showing a Certificate of Title (copy) .3 An 3 size piece of paper with a sketch map and typed material showing a Certificate of Title (copy)farnham cheese and butter factory, nestles factory warrnambool -

A black and white photograph of the Taggerty Butter Factory in Victoria.A black and white photograph of the Taggerty Butter Factory in Victoria taken around 1904. The Taggerty Butter factory opened in 1892 in the township on the Little River. It was run by the Kennedy family and built by J.B. Coombs of Acheron Station. Coombs was later Shire President. Milk had been previously taken daily to the steam-driven separators at Thornton. Upper Thornton. The cream was separated and the remains were taken back to the farms for the pigs and calves. Before these town separators existed butter had been made at home in a barrel, salted, and stored. The operation at Taggerty ceased in 1908 and the Alexandra Dairy Company took over production. The building no longer exists but materials from the original Taggerty Butter factory building now form part of the Williamson house off Swamp Creek Road.taggerty, victoria, taggerty butter factory, little river, kennedy family, j b coombs, acheron station, thornton, upper thornton, alexandra dairy company, williamson, swamp creek road
