Functional Object - Section Staff, Electric Supply Co. of Vic (ESCo), "Sturt St. South St. "
Used as a means of authorising a tramcar to have sole use of the track between the named points to avoid head on collisions. Safeworking object - known as a section staff. Not known when made, but in use until the introduction of the electric signalling in the mid 1930's by the SEC. See also Reg Items 934 and 988 for details of use and other examples are at 1851, 52 and 53 and 4444 to 4448, , 4996 and 4497, 9037 and Reg item 934 and 988 for articles on the safeworking systems.Demonstrates aspects of Safeworking on the Ballarat Tramway system to c1936 when replaced by electric signals. Yields Information about the operation of Ballarat's trams and safeworking procedures.Cast brass item with a flat part recessed section with the words "BALLARAT TRAMWAYS SECTION STAFF" cast into the surface and a flat section underneath, flush with the outside edges in which the words "STURT ST. Functional Object - Cap Badge, Stokes & Sons Melbourne, "17 Conductor", 1905?
Cap or arm Badge for the Electric Supply Co. of Victoria (ESCo) "Conductor" with conductor staff number "17" Made from a manufactured and steel plate, nickel plated to indicate the staff number position held by the wearer as part of their uniform. Letters and number stamped, with horizontal lines. At each side of the badge are vertical holes through which light leather straps have been fixed with button holes to enable securing the badge on an arm. Leather straps black on one side and tan on the other. On the rear, silver soldered on are two loops at each end of the badge to enable badge to be sewn or fitted with clips onto the cap or the uniform. Badge appears in some photos of ESCo staff in the 1900's. On the back of the back of the badge in letters is the name of the manufacturer - "Stokes & Sons". This is rear of Blacksmiths shop Tram Depot, Alf Coulter and Arthur Thompson with hammer. Now in the earlier years, the smithy Horse and early electric was against the Gregory St. frontage. I wielded the 12lb hammer to assist the then blacksmith, W. McGeachan? (red hair) 1905. Five page handwritten letter on light brown or fawn lined paper within a brown envelope within Reg. Item 2488, page 105. The envelope has been glued to the back cover of the book and is address to "Mr. James Inspector / Electric Supply". Seven overseas stamps have been stuck to the envelope. The letter dated 11/10/1937 from an unknown person who lived at 305 Eyre St Ballarat, not signed, outlines the building the horse tram depot in Wendouree Parade. The person put in a quote as the plumber. Notes various aspects of working on the site, materials, difficulties, Thompson and Moore of the Adelaide as the contractors, number of people on the job, problems with the construction, wind damage, building the workers cottages, their rooves and the cash boxes for the conductors. ... the change over from horse to electric trams and a comparison between ...Yields information about the change over from horse to electric trams and a comparison between the two types of trams, uniforms and clothing of passengers and the way destinations were shown.Black and White photograph, assumed a copy photograph of ESCo 16 and a horse tram - at Rubicon St where Sebastopol passengers transferred between horse and electric transport. No. 16 has two uniformed men at the front and a conductor on the rear stop, two children on the front seat and a lady on the rear. A uniformed horse tram driver is standing by the front of the horse. No. 16 has the destination of Grenville St, and a large sign "Sebastopol & Rubicon St Tramways via Drummond St". The destination is on the roof of the tram, possibly indicating early 1907 - 08. Used in The Golden City and its Tramways - page 42. Text notes the photograph was donated by a Mrs. I Butler. Demonstrates aspects of the SEC governance system in issuing By-laws for the travelling public, as part of their Act. Yields information about fares charged for tram services in Geelong when the SEC took over from MESCo.Eight page booklet, centre stapled. Booklet has title "Electric Tramways of the State Electricity Commission of Victoria By-Law No. 1". Pages are numbered pages 1 to 7 Gives definitions, by-laws, fares and charges, special cars, workmen cars, regulations re passengers, behaviour, nuisances, smoking, dangerous goods, luggage and behaviour of crews. Gives schedule of sections for Geelong only. Details names of SEC Commissioners. Three copies held, all with some marked changes - see inscriptions. Copy 2 - stamped as received "11/3/1936". Has Government Printer number 12195. Basis was probably used in Ballarat and Geelong when the SEC took over until the 1937 edition issued though with fare schedules gazetted. See Fares in Ballarat – from Alan Bradley 11/4/2005 – appendix for Book Copy 1 - has "Ballarat Tramway Preservation Society No. 201" written in black ink on top of cover, a large blue cross on the front cover, on change noted on page 2, with authorisation details, pencil name on front cover that has been rubbed out, and pencil drawings on back cover and dirt marks. Has been folded vertically. Copy 2 - has "Ballarat Tramway Preservation Society No. 201" written in black ink on top of cover, has been folded vertically. Gives schedule of fares and charges for Ballarat, Bendigo and Geelong. Fares applied from 1937 to 1949 - see Reference. Details names of SEC Commissioners, Minister in Charge of Electrical Undertakings. Copy has numerous changes marked in red ink internally and pasted in changes to the text. Has Government Printer number 6967. Given the printing number on Reg. Item 3108 is a higher number and that H. Green was the Government Printer for this book and in 1936 (See Reg. Item 3068), indicates a copy printed in 1937. A piece of paper has been pinned to the copy on page 23, giving details of where to relieve on the Sebastopol route. Written in red ink. Provides for 214 General Rules - in four sections - General, Accident Prevention, Procedure in Case of Accidents, Tickets, Fares Cash etc and By-Law No. 5 - General dated 4/5/1922. On both inside covers are printed warning messages about safety. On the inside cover in ink "L. J. Denmead 1584" and on title sheet "Ballarat Tramway Preservation Society Catalogue No. 305" in ink.
