White embroidered cotton Christening gown. Eleven cm deep bodice with five vertical front neck to bodice and skirt seam, panels of embroidered cotton.Neckline has a casing with drawstring of cotton tape. Cap sleeves gathered at neckline edge, and outer edge trimmed with embroidered cotton. Skirt gathers to the bodice. Bodice also has a casing and drawstring tie, leaving a centre back opening from neck to skirt. Skirt is 84 cm long, and has an elaborately embroidered centre panel - full length. Two bands of embroidered cotton edge the centre panel. Embroidered "bobbles" similar to french knots extend full length beside the embroidered bands, and also form part of the embroidery on the bands. Dress has been made to take advantage of the embroidered fabric of the train of Merle's own wedding gown.Merle Houlden made this gown for her first child, Bronwyn, using fabric from the lower tier of the train of her own wedding gown. Bri-nylon sleeveless, and embroidered nylon skirt, edged with fine lace (on the frill of the skirt). Skirt has an 8 cm frill, attached with an embroidered band of ribbon insertion. The ribbon insert is finished with two small .5cm ribbon bows. The boomerang commemorates the successful 1967 election campaign of Russell Stokes, MLA for Evelyn 1958-1973. It was manufactured by his family's firm, Stokes Australasia Limited. Russell Stokes' home was 'Lubra Bend', Yarra Glen.The boomerang is both a souvenir of an election campaign by a long-serving member of the Parliament of Victoria and an example of metal and enamel work by a Ringwood company that is now over 150 years old. The only IUD of Australian origin, developed in 1971 by Australian doctor Ian Anderson in partnership with Ansell Australia and produced at the Ansell factory, 18 River Street, Richmond in the 1970s. The device was taken up by the Battelle Foundation, USA, and clinical trials were carried out in Israel, Indonesia and Singapore. No formal clinical trials were carried out in Australia. The device was used extensively by Population Services International, a private abortion clinic in Sydney in the mid 1970s. At the time this device was donated to the collection in 1997, there were legal proceedings regarding two Australian women who claimed ongoing problems as a result of its use. The donor, Dr Richard Gutch, practised in Clifton Hill and used some in the 1970s but not for long. The drawbacks were the multi-filament string acted as a wick for infection, also the latex leaf often came away from the thread when pulled for removal. Curettage was often the only effective way to remove the IUD. Dr Gutch removed many as he developed a reputation for being skilled at their removal.Intrauterine device (IUD), Ansell-Anderson latex leaf design, with paper sleeve. Side fronts are gathered to the yoke, and have two darts on either side front, at the waistline. Short set in sleeves. Six panels form the A-line skirt. Some hand stitching on facings and hems. Clothing. Ladies' collar. Net fabric, entirely sewn into 'pin-tucks' .5 cm deep in the high stand-up collar, and increasing to 7.5 cm at the lower edge of the jabot front. Opening at the back, the jabot is fastened by nine metal hooks, and hand-stitched loops. Collar has a tightly gathered double frill of the tulle fabric, at neck and is held up right by five 'covered' 'bones'. The lower edge of the front and back is edged with a 1.5 cm wide silk fabric frill. Centre lower edge of back has two 59 cm long silk ribbon ties. This ribbon is also attached to the lower edge of the jabot 58 cm and 60 cm long - presumably for the wearer to tie firmly in place. Neckline seam is re-inforced and neatened by an organdie type fabric, hand-stitched in place. Two fine elastic loops (now perished) one 52 cm, one 58 cm would once have helped to hold the jabot in place, with the arms passing through the loops, to keep the jabot in place. Detached sleeves. Net fabric, entirely sewn into .5 cm tucks. Reaching from the wrist to above the elbow. A double net frill edges the wrists, where a 6.5 cm opening, fastens with metal hooks and hand-stitched loops. A cotton tape, .5 cm wide neatens and re-infrces this seam, and a row of chain stitch, in silk thread embellishes the outer side of the seam. Clothing. Beautiful deep cream silk bodice, fully lined with cream tulle/net. Elbow length sleeves have a semi-circle of embroidered silk, and an embroidered tulle ''flounce'', edged with cream cord - 17 cms long. The bodice has seven pin-tucks, angled from the shoulder to the waistline on each side of the front and back. Between the pin-tucks at centre front panel is an extensive cream silk, floral embroidery. A rounded neckline at front and back, is in-filled with embroidered tulle - small 1 cm diameter flowers, in a 3 cm diameter circle, defined by 12 small (3mm) embroidered circles. The tulle infill extends to a 7 cm high stand-up collar-supported by seven plastic ''bones''. The collar also features the same, circular, floral embroidery, and is also edged at the throat with cream cording. The bodice while in good condition, has been cut at the hemline, and a 10.5 cm strip of fabric has been added but unfinished. 18 metal hooks, and hand-stitched loops fasten the back of the bodice. Cream silk, woven in a jacquard style, featuring a floral design. Fully lined with cream silk satin. A 4cm deep, stand-up mandarin style collar. Eight metal hook and eyes fasten the front in a concealed way. Heavy cording, finished with pearl trimmed tassels,a double inverted pleat, 22cm long at the centre back hemline. Three darts at shoulders giving a 'sleeve-like' shape. Lower edges of which are elaborately corded. A 12cm'slit' at the lower edge seam with the front panel gives more flexibilty to the wearer. Burgundy and cream fine striped cotton, with a woven floral motif one cm in diameter. High 4.5cm stand-up burgundy collar, with a lace overlay. A pleated, and padded cap extends from the underarm seam at the front, over the shoulders, and partway over the back panel. Sleeves tight fitting at wrist, fasten with five buttons and button holes.(Four present on one sleeve, three on other sleeve).A fine burgundy pleated band finishes the sleeve at the wrist. Waistline is V pointed at front and back. At front pleats are stitched down 11-13cm long, then open up to form shaped, folded effect at the bust line. A burgundy yoke sits behind this effect, and extends over the shoulders, and high neckline. This opening is 56 cm long and fastens with 1.2 cm covered buttons and loops, (31 buttons in total). The back centre panel is peaked at the lower edge. A V shaped panel of embroidered cotton at the centre front of the yoke. A drawstring in a casing fastens at the back neckline. A tiny .75 cm button, fastens the back yoke. Nightgown is machine stitched, with some hand stitched decorative stitching. The long skirt has two bands of narrow tucks-one tuck of 1.04 cm and six bands of .04 cm. This is edged with a band of hand stitched embroidery. This band of tucking is repeated, and edged with a 6 cm wide band of eyelet embroidery. This panel is repeated with the lower edge of embroidered cotton finished with a scalloped shaped edge. A scalloped braid edges the neckline. Embroidered silk, with a swirl type embroidered pattern. Wide, and deep square neckline. Back opening with nine metal hook and eye fasteners. Seven 16cm long bones encased in ribbon - three in the front, and two either side of the back opening. The wide square neckline is edged with 4.5cm wide fine lace - (two narrower pieces stitched together). Five .5cm wide tucks border the front and back neckline. The sheer embroidered tulle sleeves have a silk panel under arm. Shoulders and sleeve cuff are trimmed with a feature of artificial roses and leaves - roses 2.5cm diameter. A 17cm frill extends from the back opening, passing under the armhole, across the tucked border at the neckline to the back opening of the left side. This frill is also trimmed with the artificial roses at 10cm intervals. The bands of lace that trim the neckline also border this frill. These three buttons and two smaller buttons on the sleeve cuffs, have the round sun symbol of Japan, and the Olympic Rings impressed into them. The breast pocket, with rounded lower corners has a cloth badge, 9.5 cm long X 6.5 cm wide, which is embroidered with a 5 cm diameter ball (of the sun) and five Olympic Rings in navy blue embroidery.
