Races were popular events at the Ithacan Philanthropic Society's annual picnic. The men's foot race was the highlight of the day. Pictured centre front of runners is the president, Andreas Papadopoulos. The young lady holding the trophy is Poppy Doubaris nee Kallinikos. She was the captain of the Melbourne Olympic Athletic Club Netball Team. The team had won the tournament against the Sydney team in Sydney in 1952 - 53.The Olympic Athletic Club was a sporting and social club established in the 1940s for young Greeks. Young Ithacans participated in the various sporting teams and social and fundraising activities organised by the club.
