Copy of an agreement dated 16/11/1900 between The City of Ballarat and the British Insulated Wire Company Ltd. Sets out the conditions that a tram system would be constructed - such as tramcars, gauge, streets, speeds including that for horse trams, alterations to services, assignment to ESCo, fares, licence for 30 years, option for Council to purchase, and lines to be constructed. Signed by John Whykes and J J Brokenshire and Vincent J Duthie for Council and Benjamin Deakin and J F Hanby for BIWC. Prepared by Cuthbert Morrow & Must, Solicitors, Ballarat. The photograph shows the demolition or removal of cable tram track in Swanston St Melbourne. The reference notes that work commenced 27/12/1925 and that conversion was completed by 24/1/1926. Given the worksite it would be most likely late December 1925. Note the large unsilenced air compressor, the large crowd of on-lookers and that Swanston St northbound seems to remain open for traffic. In the background are the Royal Hotel Arcade entrance and the Melbourne Town Hall. The Second view is a wider view of the same project. This photograph is Public Records Office photo H109 in the Victorian Railways collection.
