Australia Day 1978 Melbourne had the biggest collection of historic vehicles seen in this country. There were electric and horse drawn trams, steam trains, veteran and vintage cars and even a fly past of old flying machines. Officially the occasion marked the unveiling of Harold Freeman's giant mural at Spencer Street Station depicting a century of transportation in Australia. Taken in the 1950s, this picture is of two veterans of the First World War, Colonel Sir William Leggatt and Brigadier Sir Lionel Harris who fought together in France over 30 years prior. The two men were invested by the Queen at Buckingham palace as Knights, a prestigious honour for Australian soldiers, who for another 20 years would have no official recognition by the Australian government through the 'Order of Australia.' These photos are of a gathering at the Shrine of Legatees and a delivery of lone pine saplings on the back of a ute. Legatee George Woodward was present, also a school girl and a veteran. These photos were in an album of photos from 1993. These are the saplings grown from the seeds collected by President Chas Wilks in 1989 (item 01426). From an article in The Answer in June 1994 the event was the official handing over of the seedlings that were propagated. Present were Minister for Natural Resources, The Hon Geoffrey Coleman and Gallipoli veteran Tom Brain. Legacy has run a programme since the 1970s of propagating saplings taken from seeds of pine descended from a pine tree from Gallipoli and giving them to various clubs, schools and town councils. Legacy is helping to keep the memory of the Gallipoli "Lone Pine" alive - its spirit living on today. Presentations are made to schools, ex-service organisations and interested bodies by Legacy Clubs in the hope that they will be cherished as a symbol of nationhood and of its just pride, devotion, courage, selflessness and sense of service to others.A record of Legacy being involved with distributing saplings in 1993. A photo of the 'Widow and Children' statue in 1998. The 'Widow and Children' statue was sculpted by Louis Laumen, a Melbourne artist. The statue stands on a granite plinth in the cruciform shaped garden. There is a plaque which reads: "Legacy Garden of Appreciation. This was donated to the Glen Eira City Council Collection by Ron Fisher. The pin belonged to Ron’s father Syd and has been in the family until its donation. Syd was a WW2 veteran who joined up in Caulfield. The Mayor of Caulfield's Patriotic Fund was established in 1939 in conjunction with the Caulfield Returned Soldier's Club. Members raised funds by hosting dances in private homes and events at the Caulfield Town Hall. Sydney Legacy may have been involved as they sent Melbourne Legacy two photos and these 3 documents. One document mentions 'Concord Repatriation General Hospital will always remain open to the State's veterans and war widows'. The Victorian Commandant, Major General Holled Smith, a veteran of the humiliation at Majuba Hill, publicly declared his support of the idea of an Australian force.The growing idea that an ability to ride and shoot, combined with some degree of military training, was the fore-runner for the Mounted Riflemen. Denis Gibbons (1937 – 2011) Trained with the Australian Army, before travelling to Vietnam in January 1966, Denis stayed with the 1st Australian Task Force in Nui Dat working as a photographer. For almost five years Gibbons toured with nine Australian infantry battalions, posting compelling war images from within many combat zones before being flown out in late November 1970 after sustaining injuries. Two professional photographs of the "Widow and Children" statue. The statue was commissioned by Legacy and unveiled in 1998 and symbolises the work of Legacy caring for the widows and children of veterans. Sculptured by Louis Laumen for the Legacy Garden of Appreciation, Birdwood Avenue on the Shrine Reserve. The Legacy Garden of Appreciation is in a cruciform shape and features red poppies which flower around Remembrance Day (11 November). The sculpture was dedicated on 29th September 1998 (part of this taken from the Shrine of Remembrance website).
