Classes were held weekly at Legacy House and there was often a waiting list for the water classes, which had both swimming instruction and water exercises. The extensive fashion and design collection of the Kew Historical Society has been assembled over a number of decades. One subsection of this collection is shoes, designed and manufactured for Australian women by Australian and European designers. Many of the shoes, while often mass-produced, were generally constructed by skilled artisans using traditional shoe-making techniques. The shoes date from the 1890s to the 1980s. Sad-irons or "solid" irons were made by blacksmiths and used to smooth out material by pressing the hot iron over it. A piece of sheet -iron was placed over the kitchen fire and the irons placed on it could be heated whilst remaining clean of ash.. The women used 2 irons - one heating while the other was used. Thick cloth or gloves protected their hands from the hot irons. The handle was removed from the cool iron and re- attached to remove the hot iron from the fire. The cool iron was replaced on the fire or stove to heat again. These irons were cleaned with steel wool to prevent them marking the material. If the iron was too hot the material would scorch. Most homes set aside one day for ironing and some large households had an ironing room with a special stove designed to heat irons. However, most women had to work with a heavy, hot iron close to the fireplace even in summer.These sad irons remind us of the difficult circumstances experienced in their daily routines by the pioneers and early settlers of Moorabbin Shire. Deaf women dressed in white flowing robes were typically used by the Society at meetings and lectures giving a performance in living statuary. This photograph is a depiction from Rock of Ages in Statuary and Song described in a review by the Spectator - the words of the hymn softly sung by the Cornish Choir to an exquisitely delicate organ accompaniment by Mr E. J. Watkins. The Grouping of Living Statuary with the limelight thrown upon them from either side, motionless as marble figures, but with the life and love and adoration in their eyes and on their faces, formed the most beautiful objects we have ever beheld. The Audience looked and listened in breathless silence and many eyes were glistening with tears.This photo is significant as a studio photograph of Deaf women who performed 'living statuar'y at many of the lectures and meetings held in the early years of the 20th century by the Adult Deaf and Dumb Society of Victoria ; possibly introduced by Ernest Abraham to add drama to the occasion.A5 black and white photograph on a cardboard frame. Clothing. Navy blue wool (or polyester?) fabric. Pointed lapel collar, lined on the underside with felt. Two brass Leidertafel style badges-one either side of collar. Two rectangular shield-shaped breast pockets have rounded lower corners, and a shield-shaped flap closure, fastened with a 1.8 cm brass like plastic button. All buttons have an impressed laural wreath and horn, (suspended by a three looped cord) - a replica of British Light Infantry buttons. Three brass like plastic buttons at centre front (4th one is missing). All buttons are pinned onto the garment to enable easy removable for cleaning. Two inside breast pockets. Fully lined with blue taffeta-like fabric. On each upper sleeve, at shoulder level there is an 8 cm diameter circular cloth badge, embroidered in blue, red, and gold, displaying a Coat-of- Arms, and two shields - one blue embroidered with a bunch of grapes, and one red, embroidered with a sheaf of wheat and a sheep. These are probably symbols of the rural aspect of the town of Marong. Two lower ''pocket flaps'' are decorative, but not real pockets.Back of buttons: STOKES AUSTRALIA. It includes clothing and clothing accessories worn by four women in the Cohen and McIntyre families across three generations. The items worn by Melbourne architect, and Kew resident, Dione McIntyre date from the 1960s and 1970s, and include evening wear, day wear, hats and shoes. As Dione McIntyre often accompanied her husband, fellow architect Peter McIntyre, to formal events, there are a number of pieces of evening wear among the items. The McIntyre Collection also includes items worn by women of an earlier generation: by Lilian Cohen, Dione McIntyre's mother, and by her mother-in-law, the wife of the architect Robert McIntyre. At the other end of the chronological spectrum are a number of outfits belonging to, worn and donated by Annie McIntyre. These include outfits created by notable late 20th century Australian and/or international fashion designers. The McIntyre Collection is significant historically and artistically as it includes examples of design that demonstrate changing tastes in fashion over an 80-year period. When this summer dress was donated by Elaine Chenoweth, a resident of Kew, it was identified as a dress purchased from the Misses Mooney Shop at 189 Collins Street (active 1932-1972) and dated to the 1930s. The consensus is that the dress was made from a 1930s fabric in the mid to later 1930s and shows the characteristic sleeves, waistline and flared skirt of the period.Pink floral voile day dress, reputedly purchased from the Misses Mooney's Shop in Collins Street, Melbourne. An accompanying seating plan lists the attendees including the Governor of Victoria, the Victorian Premier, State and Federal parliamentary representatives and distinguished guests from neighbouring municipalities.
