Established by George Guthrie in 1857 (about 5km north of its current site) and then again seven years later in 1864 after it initially closed, Bendigo Pottery remains one of the most influential and longest running Pottery’s in Australia. Over the years the Pottery has contributed to the growth and development of the district through both its products including building products, table ware and decorative and commemorative war as well as artistically, being responsible for training and supporting many potters locally. The City of Greater Bendigo has had a long history of partnering with Bendigo Pottery and the Civic Collection holds a number of important items within its collection. This Sir Edmund Barton 'reform' flask was one of a limited edition character bottles produced by the Pottery to commemorate his contribution to Australian politics. Edmund Barton became Australia’s first Prime Minister on New Year’s Day 1901, at a huge public ceremony in Centennial Park in Sydney. Reform flasks were English salt-glazed stoneware flasks produced in the early 19th century shaped into the form of figures connected with the Reform Bill of 1832. Much was made of puns like ‘the spirit of reform’ at the time. Artist John Frith has taken the reform flask form as inspiration for a series of political ceramics of some Australian Prime Ministers. The series includes Edmund Barton, Alfred Deakin and Chris Watson. Glazed ceramic flask in the shape of Sir Edmund Barton. The City of Moorabbin Historical Society was formed c 1960 by a group of Moorabbin residents who were concerned that the history of the area should be preserved. A good response to a call for items related to the historical area of Moorabbin Shire brought donations of a wide variety of artefacts which are now preserved by the current members of CMHS at Box Cottage Museum . Helen Stanley, Secretary of CMHS, began producing a Newsletter for members in April 2007 to provide current information and well researched items of historical interest. Helen Stanley has produced a bi-monthly Newsletter, 2007 - 2013, for the members of the City of Moorabbin Historical Society that contains well researched interesting historical items, notification of upcoming events, current advice from Royal Australian Historical Society , Museums Australia Victoria and activities of Local Historical Societies. The Newsletter is an important record of the activities of the CMHS. Tom Sheehy, past President of CMHS, was an Historian and Author of 'Battlers tamed a Sandbelt'.A4 paper printed both sides x1. This medal was presented to student nurse Annie Rentle in recognition of her efforts during the fire that destroyed Wards 4 and 6 on Boxing Day 1888. Patients had to be rescued after the main staircase collapsed. All the patients survived and the nurses remained calm and in control throughout the emergency. Demolition appears to be under way in this image of the Alfred Hall. It was built in 1867 for the visit of Queen Victoria's son Prince Alfred the Duke of Edinburgh, across the Yarrowee (which formed the municipal boundary) apparently because the municipalities of Ballarat and Ballarat East could not decide who should have the honour! The Alfred Hall held many of the city's events over 89 years, but was symbolically locked up the day the Civic Hall in Mair Street was officially opened, in August 1956. Mrs Bon Strange and her husband Bert were well known Ballarat residents. The certificate and tie clips were in the possession of Dr John Mainland. Mainland graduated from the University of Melbourne in 1950 with a Bachelor of Science degree. After researching and completing his medical degree, Mainland entered into the field of anaesthetics, training at the Royal Women's and Royal Children's Hospitals, later Alfred Hospital, in 1959. He completed training in 1964 and remained at the Alfred Hospital. During his career, he also became the first anaesthetist appointed to the position of Professor in Victoria. His other achievements include manufacturing a respiratory monitoring module that accompanied astronauts on the United States moon landing and developing a stimulator to lessen the risk of deep vein thrombosis in surgical patients. Mainland became a Fellow of the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists in 1992, retiring from the profession in 1997.The certificate rests beneath a thin layer of glass kept in a light wooden frame. The certificate is cream in colour with dark brown writing. In the middle is an illustration of Box Hill and District Hospital building. At the bottom of the certificate is the signature of the President and Secretory. On the back of the frame there are two metal loops connected by a thin piece of metal wire. Hanging on this wire are two clips from the Alfred Hospital. The face of the clips is consists of the Alfred Hospital emblem in red and gold surrounded by a border of blue with the name of the hospital inscribed. all nurses at the Alfred Hospital were required to use these boxes to send uniforms to laundry, also all hospital staff who had uniforms supplied. (from previous catalogue): All nursing staff wore hospital supplied uniforms for much of the twentieth century. The Royal Melbourne Hospital ran the 'Central Linen Service' for during this time - doing all the laundry for all the public hospitals in Melbourne. Staff uniforms were laundered separately, everyone had their own numbered laundry case. Staff also had a small printed docket book with duplicate copies (complete with a piece of carbon paper) and the number of uniform items were detailed when the case was sent off to the laundry.
