Letter - Letter - Mr Williams to his daughter Eleanor Rebecca Jones, 17/10/1854
These letters came to Portland on the 'City of Sydney' under Captain Henderson. This ship was owned by the Henty brothers. Captain James Fawthrop was the harbour master at Portland and also captain of the Portland Lifeboat crew at the time of the wrecking of the Admella in 1859.Hand-written letter in glass bottle. Project to interconnect NSW, Victoria and SA power grid officially opened 30 March 1990. Painting one of several commissioned to mark the link up. Presented to Cr. Bob Menzel at Heywood terminal station. Later in Admella Week activities display (Aug. 4-18, 1990). Displayed at Woodturners' Guild rooms in 1992 (Source: Portland Observer, 12/8/92).Depiction of a harbour and port with industry, boats, ships and a town in the background. In foreground is a road and a grassy area with pine trees. Jetties lead from this area into water. At centre right is an active port with woodchip pile, cranes, buildings and silos. To the left is a red vessel. At top left is a shore area with a road rising to the right, a spired church and several buildings. Large amounts of steam rises from the pile of woodchips of the port. Bronze medal presented to James Kean for his part in the rescue of the survivors from the wreck of the Admella on Carpenter's Rock, August 1859. Small oil on paper painting of Captain James Fawthrop, wearing his gold Admella medal. He is wearing a dark-coloured uniform jacket & cap with letters "HD" in gold. Blue sky & clouds in background. The painting is covered with glass and is set in an oval, dark wooden frame, that has a gold inner line. The painting is bordered by three mat boards, dark grey, light grey and gold. The back is covered in brown paper, with cord between the two metal 'eyes' for hanging. -
