This microscope is thought to be associated with Chemist Erskine Llewellyn of Ballarat. Erskine E. Llewellyn studied Chemistry at the Ballarat School of Mines in 1885. It may also be associated with Palmer's Chemist in Lydiard Street Ballarat. "OBITUARY. - The many friends here and in the surrounding districts will regret to learn of the tragically sudden death of Mr Erskine Llewellyn, who for many years was associated with the firm of A. M. Palmer and Co., chemists, of Lydiard street. For some considerable time Mr Llewellyn had been associated with the U.F.S. Jakob Maul (1866-1953) founded a metal works factory in 1912 at Zell in Odenwald not far from Frankfurt. He was born the son of a winegrower from the Rheinhessen region of Germany that lies on the left bank of the river Rhine. At the age of 45, he started a metal works factory to produce various types of scales but during the second world war the factory was bombed and production ended. Production for the manufacture of scales resumed in 1948. In 1953 at his death Jakobs son Fritz Scharmann an engineer who had been working with his father since 1923 took over the management of the Maul companies. In 1970 the production responsibilities for Philip J Maul was taken over by Porti Office Equipment who was based in Hamburg. The company has undergone several integrations with subsidiary companies. Today the company has diversified into different areas one of which is manufacturing solar scales. An original postal scale made in Germany before the Second World War and regarded today as a collector's item. Catherine Helen Spence (31 October 1825 – 3 April 1910) was a Scottish-born Australian author, teacher, journalist, politician and leading suffragette. Her family moved to South Australia in 1839. In 1897 she became Australia's first female political candidate after standing (unsuccessfully) for the Federal Convention held in Adelaide. Given the epitaph "Grand Old Woman of Australasia", Spence was commemorated on the Australian 5 dollar note issued for the Centenary of Federation of Australia. She was one of the prime movers, with C. Emily Clark (sister of John Howard Clark), of the "Boarding-out Society". This organization had as its aim the placing of destitute children, who would otherwise be sent to "Industrial School", into approved families. Boots are believed to be one of the earliest shoes created when the evolution of footwear had begun. Boots form the building blocks of modern footwear which were merely a two-piece unit covering the foot and lower leg, a century ago. Throughout history, the importance of boots has been about fulfilling the needs of the wearer to be in sync with the prevailing culture. Boots were initially made of various materials like cotton, wool, silk, fur, felt, and leather (including caribou hide and sealskin. Around1000 B.C.E., men wore simple boots made of untanned leather with the fur turned in against the leg to keep it warm. These baglike boots were simple in design and then leashed to the leg by just a thong of leather.
