The 8th/13th Victorian Mounted Rifles was raised as a regiment of the Royal Australian Armoured Corps on 1 May 1948 with Headquarters in Melbourne and squadrons in Sale, Benalla/Wangaratta and Albury. In 1955 Regimental Headquarters moved to Wangaratta and a second squadron was located at Albury. The Sale squadron transferred to 4th/19th Prince of Wales’s Light Horse. Nineteen local schools participated in the project which was co-ordinated by Hazel Mournay, and the two artists assisting were Michael Chanter and Richard Price. Daniel Robertson Brick Company provided the tiles and the completed amphitheatre was opened by the Member for Koonung, Mr Bruce Atkinson on Sunday 4th June 1995.A series of coloured photographs showing school children designing and decorating tiles to be used to pave the Nunawading Amphitheatre in 1995. Each school was given a year to research, design and paint tiles to fit a given shape. This project was one of the significant events organised to celebrate the Golden Jubilee of the former City of Nunawading in 1995.
