June remembers riding and driving trams (about age 8) on a Sunday at the depot and playing in the inspection pits. Sheet of foolscap size paper, printed both sides as a SEC Electricity Supply Department, Provincial Tramways, Trip way bill showing Motorman/Conductor name, traffic number, day, date, trip details, time route, tram, ticket prices, numbers and number sold. Used by L. Walker, No. 54 on Saturday Sept 18, 1971, on tram No. 35 between Sebastopol and Lydiard St. North. Shows opening numbers in four figures and the closing numbers in three. Gives details of 12 trips from commencing at 7.55pm and finishing at 11.55pm. Has inscription on form "The Last Trip Way Bill on abandonment of Tramways Ballarat Sept 18, 1971, Lew Walker, Conductor / Motorman". See Reg Item 259 and 1057 for references. Question - did they do Trip Way Bills the following day, the last day on Sept. 19 1971? Significant in being a form used by the SEC inspectors on the tramcars as part of their duties to monitor the performance of the trams and their crews. Could be used for recording results of ticket inspections as well.Printed form titled "Daily Report of Cars Inspected", head "State Electricity Commission of Victoria". Has space for Inspectors name, time on , time off, date, traffic, weather and Inspector's Signature. Form has table with 9 columns, up to 26 trams to be inspected, recording route, motorman or conductors name, car number, time, inspected between, number of passengers, passes and remarks. Photograph of Geelong No. 16 at the Chilwell terminus 23/6/1949, with the J. Cahill Milk bar, shop in the background. Would appear the driver / motorman has just entered the end to drive back into town. Both poles are still on the overhead. Tram has the destination of Chilwell. Originally thought that the photo was by Ken McCarthy, via Bill Parkinson - see email from Greg King of 13-9-2018, but on locating the negative from the Wal Jack collection, received by Keith Kings, record photographer revised. Digital image of Prahran and Malvern Tramways Trust (PMTT) bogie tram No. 35 at the Burke Road terminus c1914. The tram has the destination of St Kilda Road. Three crewman are standing by the front of the tram - motorman or driver and two conductors. Two conductors were used as the seating arrangements had two full width cross bench seats as shown in the floor plan - see second image. This prevented the conductor collecting fares from all passengers unless they swung to the outside of the tram. Not known whether this was a full time arrangement or for peak periods only. Essay, Richard Gilbert, "My Uncle Bill - The Tramway Man", 2014
Essay or article prepared by Richard Gilbert in 2014 about his Uncle Bill - William Simpson. His father Stephen Simpson was a cable tram conductor. After serving in the army in the medical service in Europe, Bill joined the MMTB in 1921 as a Conductor at Kew Depot and then as a driver or motorman. He recalls the accident with tram No. 65 at Deepdene when the tram was hit by the Deepdene Dasher. After a transfer to Malvern Depot in 1926, he remained there until 1944 when he worked in the electrical shop at Preston Workshops. He retired in 1959, passing in April 1985 aged 87 years. This item was published by the Ballarat Tramway Museum in the June 2020 issue of Fares Please! Yields information about a collision between a tram and motor vehicle at the Victoria St terminus and issues with the driver of the motor vehicle being fatigued and the effects of alcohol - see article written on Coroners inquests by Alan Bradley.Ten page copy, from scanned original of a Coroner's Inquest and proceedings into the death of Bernard John Bourke in Ballarat following a collision between a motor car driven by the deceased and SEC tram No. 12 at the Victoria St terminus on, 5/7/1963. The Coroners Inquest was held on 28/8//1963. The copy of the inquest from the Public Records Office Victoria - VPRS 24/P2, unit 62, file 1963/1399. For detail scans of photographs by the Police see Reg. Item 3710. Contains witness statements by: Desmond Ian Domaschenze - Motorman SEC, William Alexander Maes, Motorman SEC and Constable Neil Thomas Patterson. Not copied was the post mortem report: The deceased, Bernard John Bourke, was dead on arrival at Ballarat Base Hospital. A post mortem on 7 July found fractures of ribs and associated lung damage, and concluded that “death was caused by stove in chest”. On 8 July Bourke’s blood was analysed. The conclusion: “I analysed this blood and found it to have an alcohol content of 0.120%. This blood alcohol level in an eleven stone man would be equivalent to the minimum consumption of eight, seven ounce glasses of beer”. On inside of front cover has a list of Route Numbers for Ballarat - see image 2, and marked as issued to R. Courtney. The government printed H.E. Daw. Added 19/1/2007. Black and white photo of ESCo No. 12 outside Wendouree Parade depot, post the 1912 installation of Motorman's windscreens. Both blinds rolled up. Has a roof advertisement for "Carter & Werner Opticians" and a step ad for "Eureka Cos. BO Punch". Seat backs face passengers to sit on the outside of the tram., that is have yet to be relocated to face inwards only. See image 757.2 - which shows this. Three copies of the photo - both from a copy neg. Copy 1, circa 1980, Copy 2, by John Phillips, 1993, Copy 3 ex Ken Magor, sent by Wal Jack to Ken. The rear of this print has extensive details on rear. Sign, A. Simpson and Son Limited Enamellers of Pirie St Adelaide, "Passengers are requested ....."
One of a group of signs that were fitted into tramcars in Ballarat, giving instructions to passengers about prams, behaviour, smoking, fare payment, talking to the motorman, instructions or information to drivers etc. Yields information about the sign manufacture, demonstrates the type of signs provided in tramcars.Enamel sign, black capital letters and lines on white background, titled "Passengers are requested not to enter into conversation with the motorman when tram is in motion". One of a number similar signs donated to the Ballarat Tramway Preservation Society by the SEC following closure of the Ballarat Tramways system in 1971. Uniform - Cap, Commonwealth Government Clothing Factories Melbourne, 1960's
Demonstrates uniform cap manufacture, badge and has a strong association with a former Ballarat Driver - Jock Menzies.SEC Motorman/Drivers/Conductors cap - green cloth exterior, grey cotton interior lining, brown leather internal hat band, black cotton hat band on exterior with a plastic band at the front half of the cap terminating in two small SEC metal buttons on either side, black plastic peak fitted with cap or badge No. 60, nickel plated silver, in the centre of the cap above the hat band. Certificate, Western Australian Government Tramways and Ferries
Two certificates issues by the Western Australian Government Tramways and Ferries to a tram driver and a trolley bus driver. 4287.1 - Certificate No. 1031, originally printed for the Western Australian Government Tramways and Electricity Supply, but overtyped with the word "Ferries", issued to Ian Arthur Johnson for the position of Motorman on 3/11/1949 and signed by the General Manager.
