This framed drawing depicts a small vessel wrecked on the shore, resting on rocks, with sea in the background. The artist, Norm Cooper, created the drawing in 1976. He was a well-liked and respected local artist and surfer. The picture was framed in Warrnambool by Stuart Prince in the 1980s. Norm Cooper passed away in 1988. The Southwest Boardriders inaugural Norm Cooper Memorial contest, the 'Normie' , was held in 2015 in his honour, "celebrating the legacy of one of the region's most legendary surfers" (a quote from the Southwest Boardriders). The name of the vessel in the drawing, '726 Willpower', may represent one of several yachts that have the name 'Willpower'. The framer, Stuart Prince Picture Framing, was a local business, Prince was one of the owners of the Henna Street Picture Framers at 74 Henna Street, Warrnambool. He retired in 2019 after 22 years in the business.This line drawing's subject is a wrecked vessel, connected to the local theme of maritime history, the 'Shipwreck Coast'.Drawing, pen and ink line drawing on white paper, in black painted wooden frame with gilt border. A document containing a speech by Colonel A. N. Kemsley, E.D. at a weekly luncheon at Legacy sometime in the early 1950s. He presented details of the initial building of the Shrine and the changes being made to commemorate the second world war, such as the forecourt and new cenotaph and flagpoles. He mentions the upcoming Anzac Day in 1953. After the first world war there was a decision made to create a memorial. Legatees were involved in the process at various times and capacities. In particular Legatee Kemsley was vocal in idea of a structure over a utilitarian memorial (such as a hospital or a park) - see letter at 01182. These notes include the resolution that passed at the Melbourne Town Hall at a public meeting: "That this meeting of citizens confirm the launching of an appeal by the Lord Mayor to establish a National War Memorial by means of a monument and that an executive committee with the Lord Mayor as Chairman with power to add and point sub-committees be formed to carry out the project." Also that 20 sites were selected for consideration in 1921. Although the St Kilda Road site was favoured early on, by 1926 there was pressure to change to a "provision of square" and Cenotaph at the intersection of Spring and Bourke Streets. Legacy Clubs voiced their opposition to this proposal by passing a resolution "That the Melbourne Legacy Club, representative of the returned soldiers in business in this city, whilst welcoming the Anzac Square Scheme as a city improvement, cannot support it as a War Memorial scheme and affirms its support for the Shrine of Remembrance in the Domain as the only War Memorial worthy of Victoria's unparalleled efforts in the Great War." The document was in an envelope with a letter dated 30 April 1971 (01182) that also outlines the efforts Legacy (especially L/- Kemsley) went through to promote the construction of the Shrine of Remembrance over a proposed square. The envelope says 'The Origin of the Shrine of Remembrance p/p Legatees Kemsley and Joynt'. And the initial 'JMBA'?. It was in a file with other documents concerning the Shrine and it's history.A record of the events that led to the construction of the Shrine of Remembrance as noted by a Legatee at the time. Probably acquired for use in Telegraphy courses run at the Ballarat SChool of Mines between 1875 and 1893. Telegraph relays amplified electrical signals in a telegraph line. Telegraph messages traveled as a series of electrical pulses through a wire from a transmitter to a receiver. Short pulses made a dot, slightly longer pulses a dash. The pulses faded in strength as they traveled through the wire, to the point where the incoming signal was too weak to directly operate a receiving sounder or register. A relay detected a weak signal and used a battery to strengthen the signal so that the receiver would operate. This relay was made by the firm of Charles T. and John N. Chester, two brothers who successfully partnered in New York City. Charles (1826-1880) founded the firm and provided the expert telegraphy knowledge while John (1820-1871) kept the books and managed the business operations.(http://americanhistory.si.edu/collections/search/object/nmah_706518, accessed 25/01/2018)Electromagnetic relay device used in telegraphy. The working parts mounted on a brass plate, attached to a wood base. Equipped with four terminal posts. Adjustable contactor mechanism. This electromagnetic Relay Device was used in Telegraphy at the Ballarat School of Mines. After a special meeting of the Ballarat SChool of Mines Council in 1874, a decision was made to offer instruction in Telegraphy, a subject not directly related to mining. Telegraphy was taught by W.P. Bechervaise, postmaster at Ballarat. Shears belong to donor's father Maurice Dalton who was foreman of the show floor of the Dennys Lascekkes building until his retirement after 34 years at the building. Maurice used the shears in his work as a wool classer in rural Victoria and New South Wales. The shears are 14" N.1 Combination UTS hand shears made in Sheffield, England.A pair of metal blade shears. The blade is engraved with 'MADE IN ENGLAND / COMBINATION / U.T.S. / SHEFFIELD / N.1'. This box once contained cigarettes supplied or sold by the Warrnambool Club. This club was formed in 1873 as a social club for men of the more affluent and professional classes in Warrnambool and district. The club rooms were originally in the Warrnambool Club Hotel established by John Amon Smith in Kepler Street between Timor and Koroit Streets. By 1876 Warrnambool Club membership had grown to 70 and the premises at the hotel were considered too small. A new Warrnambool Club building was opened in 1877 in Kepler Street and this building and the club still exist today. Nothing is known of Samuel Dempster except that he was Irish-born and served in World War Two. This box is of minor interest as a memento of the Warrnambool Club in the mid 20th century and of Samuel Dempster whose connections to Warrnambool are not at this time known. This is a rectangular-shaped cardboard box with a hinged lid pasted at the centre. The box is buff-coloured with gold printing and handwriting in black ink on the top of the lid. The Centenary-Jubilee Train. The Centenary-Jubilee train was one of the outstanding successes of the Centenary and Jubilee celebrations in Victoria. The train, attractively painted green and gold, consisted of eleven cars, and toured Victoria to take to people in the country exhibits of interest associated with the celebrations. National Art Gallery paintings, rare manuscripts and pictures were displayed, as well as models showing the history of gold production, and models and illustrations of national projects controlled by the various departments of this State. The Commonwealth section included displays by the Army, Navy, Air Force and Post Office; a war materials exhibit from the Supply Department; and diagrams and maps of the Snowy Mountains Hydro-Electric scheme. The Railways exhibit portrayed the century's growth and development of railways in Victoria and their influence on the prosperity of the State. During its 6,000 miles tour, from 1st February to 30th June, the train visited 168 stations and was inspected by 547,978 people. An entertainment unit accompanied the train and gave 100 performances which were attended by 96,400 people. Flt Lt J S Austin DFC, 400363. No 608 Sqn RAF, Nos 32, 13 & 2 Sqns. Stock agent of Lara, Vic; b Melbourne 15 May 1918. Died of illness 9 Nov 1943. Timor was the target for the night of 6 July, when Flight Lieutenant "Bunny" Austin (A16-207) led five Hudsons to bomb Koepang town. The next night he led back seven aircraft against the airfield at Penfoei, attacking before dawn on the 8th prior to United States Liberators bombing the runways and barracks. 75 Austin's aircraft was caught by Penfoei's master defensive searchlight, and Austin used violent evasion and switching on and off of his IFF equipment, a tactic used in Europe. The radar-controlled searchlights went out. Flying Officer Mick Helsham (A16-160) attacked first to act as a pathfinder and mark the target for the other Hudsons and Liberators:Full service records of J. S.
