Red and white covered booklet titled 'Naming Bendigo evolution of a city's identity 1836 - 1891. It has a sketch map of Bendigo and Golden Square in 1851. It has a number of photos of early paintings, postcards and objects. The Foreword is written by Cr Rod Campbell, Mayor of the City of Greater Bendigo and the Introduction is written by Karen Quinlan, Director. Robert Samuel Valentine Cocking (1882 - 14/5/1945) Born in Bendigo, Val Cocking began hi retail career at Myer Bendigo before opening his own draper shop c. 1912 in the lower block Pall Mall. In 1914 he moved his stock into temporary premises while he renovated his new shop, which combined the former Post Office Hotel and adjacent grocery and stationary shops. The new emporium opened in Aug 1918 selling drapery and soft goods. Mr Cocking was a champion rifle shooter; President of the Bendigo Chamber of Commerce; President of the Sandhurst Football Club for 18 years and President of the Bendigo Cricket Club. Bennetts Hardware shop was in Hargeaves St near the entrance to Allan's Walk in the 1950's. Beehive buildings. This was originally the Sandhust Mining Exchange and as such was the oldest purpose built exchange in Australia and was one of only two in regional Australia. It was initially established in the 1850's to service the miners of the area. It's first double story incarnation as the Bendigo Stock Exchange, contained up to 2000 stockbrokers and 5000 shareholders. In 1871 the building burnt to the ground and the new and current building was completed in 1872. View of Charing Cross and Pall Mall Bendigo, featuring the Alexandra fountain still under construction. The fountain was jointly funded by the Bendigo Juvenile Industrial Exhibition in 1879, a 500 pound donation by George Lansell and a 700 pound grant from the Sandhurst City Council. The fountain was designed by William Vahland and was opened 5/7/1881. The fountain is 28 feet tall and sits in a 2 feet deep pond that is 50 feet in diameter. Rae's School was opened on the 22nd April 1861, with 22 students. Mr. John Rae was the Headmaster. By 1919, it was an adjunct of the Violet Street State School.Sepia coloured postcard . The black tin helmet case is an object owned by Major-General Gellibrand who motivated Legatee Stan Savige to found Legacy. Major-General Sir John Gellibrand KCB, DSO and Bar, D. de G(Fr), DSM (US), was born in Tasmania in 1874. After schooling in England and Germany he entered then Royal Military College, Sandhurst, taking the Sword of Honour in 1893. Commissioned into the South Lancashire Regiment, he saw service in the Boer War, 1900. This case which would carry a service cap, a dress cap and a pith helmet dates from that period. Moving to the Manchester Regiment in 1902, Captain Gellibrand then attended Staff College, Camberley 1906-7 and was posted DAA and QMG Ceylon. In 1912 he retired and returned to Tasmania. He joined the AIF as a Captain in 1914, served in 24th Battalion and commanded 6th Brigade and then 3rd Division. He motivated his erstwhile Staff Captain Stan Savige to get together the Melbourne men who founded Legacy in 1923. This Hat Box was generously donated by Mr W C Steele of Wangaratta. Former Captain AIF. The tintype (or ferrotype or Melainotype) was produced on metallic sheet (not, actually, tin) instead of glass. The plate was coated with collodion and sensitized just before use. It was introduced by Adolphe Alexandre Martin in 1853. The most common size was about the same as the carte-de-visite, 5.5cm x 9.0cm, but both larger and smaller ferrotypes were made. The smallest were "Little Gem" tintypes, about the size of a postage-stamp, made simultaneously on a single plate in a camera with 12 or 16 lenses. They were often produced by travelling photographers, and were cheaper than Ambrotypes so made photography available to working classes, not just to the more well-to-do. The print would come out laterally reversed (as one sees oneself in a mirror). Being quite rugged, tintypes could be sent by post. Tintypes were eventually superseded by gelatin emulsion dry plates in the 1880s, though street photographers in various parts of the world continued with this process until the 1950s. The firm traded as both The American Gem Studio and The American Studio. Others franchises were opened in Melbourne, Ballarat and Sandhurst (Bendigo). The Sandhurst branch closed in 1882 and Adelaide in 1884. All Gove and Allen studios had ceased trading by 1885. The studio addresses were: 23 King William St, Adelaide; 324 George St, Sydney; 95 Swanston St, Melbourne; Howard Place, Sandhurst; 7 Queen St, Brisbane; The card mounts used in Gove and Allen studios in Australia are identical to those used in America. They were initially made of plain white card with embossing around the oval image opening in the mount while some also had simple geometric and floral printed designs as well.
