This file contains four items. 1/Photocopied pamphlet on the establishment of the Bambra Road Church of Christ, Caulfield South, including information on its early members and the pioneers of the nineteenth century church meetings. The pamphlet was produced for the fiftieth anniversary of the church in May 1970 and includes copies of photographs and drawings of the early church. 2/A postcard photograph by W. Sanderson, taken c. 1921, of the building of the church of Christ, Bambra Road, built in one day. Included with the photo is a letter for the donation dated 02/05/1998. 3/Information on Bambra Road Church of Christ, undated and unattributed, providing details about the pipe organ, Joint Choir and the Adult Group which continued at St. Stephen’s after the Union of the Churches. 4/Two photographs, dated 20/11/2009, of the front of the former Bambra Road Church of Christ and of the foundation stone. In February 1965, Staffs Railway Store, the oldest business premises in the Eltham shopping district was demolished. Formerly a self-service grocery, restaurant and electrical repair shop, the building for many years housed Eltham’s only ‘family’ grocer and feed store. Earlier it had appeared to have been the town’s bakery. The building had been purchased in late March 1939 by Mr Eric N. Staff. At the time of E.N. Staff’s purchase there were huge bakers’ ovens located at the rear and the building also had a well and four toilets for employees. When the ‘pictures’ came to Eltham with the opening of the Eltham Public Hall across the road in 1941, Mr E.N. Staff extended the business and opened a milk bar and sweet shop. Further extensions re-established the tea rooms of days gone by. Mr E.N. Staff conducted business for about 15 years before handing over the reins to his son, Ray Staff. When his son Ray took over, the milk bar and tea rooms were closed for several years but the milk bar and was later re-opened and subsequently became a greengrocers and later again, a restaurant. The tea rooms section was converted to an electrical repair shop about 1955. Electoral Roll records for 1967 record Raymond Charles Staff at 929 Main Road, Eltham, grocer, and in 1968 at Lot 4, Hillcrest Avenue, Eltham, taxi truck operator. So it would appear that Ray continued to run the business for approximately two years after the original store was demolished and a new supermarket was built. Today, 929 Main Road is the Nongkhai Thai Restaurant and is precisely where the original Staffs store stood. Even though the facade has been modified at eye level with new larger windows, the upper facade is identical to that of the new Eltham Big Star Food Centre of 1965/66. But how did the original building, the oldest premises in the 1965 era shopping centre come about? On August 12th, 1902 at the Eltham Courthouse, appearing before T. Smallman, Esq,. Police Magistrate, and Messrs. W. Duncan and W.J. Taylor, Justices of the Peace is Luther Haley, baker. Wilfred Henry Johnston, by his agent Stanley Ernest Elder had applied for a warrant of ejectment under the Landlord and Tenant Act 1890 against Luther Haley from the bakery premises at the corner of Main Road and York Street. From the evidence presented we learn that Mrs Burgoyne of Eltham had purchased the property some months earlier from Mr Johnston, which consisted of a store and bakery establishment at Eltham occupied by Mr. Luther Haley, and whose lease expired some little time back, and up to the present time, Mr. Haley was not prepared to leave. He informed the court that he is unable to secure at Eltham a suitable house in which to carry on his business, but was building a place near the railway station which he expected to be done in about three weeks time, and he is then prepared to give up possession of the premises he now occupies. Mr Smallman informed the defendant, Luther Haley, that he will have to quit the premises in three weeks from the present date, and that a warrant of ejectment would be issued. However he also informed Mr Haley that he would order the warrant to lie in the office for three weeks from that date. The premises under construction referred to by Luther Haley in court were situated on the western side of Main Road, near the railway station slightly opposite present-day Arthur Street. It was opened around September 1902 as a General Store, Bakery and Tea Rooms. This was the original building in the present-day shopping precinct. At the time the only thing nearby was the railway station. Luther Haley’s business appeared to prosper and he would have catered to not only the locals abut also day visitors by train on Sundays coming up from Melbourne, offering fresh baked produce, tea rooms and summer drinks. The fields across Main Road running between present day Arthur Street and Luck Street were known as Haley’s Paddock and at times were used for community festivities and picnics. A newspaper report on the annual State schools picnic held at Haley’s Paddock on March 11, 1904 described it as “quite close to the railway station, and is quite capable of holding comfortably 10,000 people. With its ample shade and hilly surroundings, it is an ideal place for any gathering.” Luther Haley successfully ran his general store, bakery and tea rooms until 1917 when he and his family departed the district and moved to Westgarth Street in Northcote where he changed careers and became a publisher. It was then taken over by Hannah Lloyd and became known as Lloyd’s Railway General Store from 1917 to 1920. From then it had a succession of owners, one as short as two months until March 31, 1939 when the Grocery Business formerly carried on by Mr. T.K. White of Eltham for the previous eight years was purchased by Mr Eric N. Staff of Research and became known as E.N. Staff’s Railway Store. The Storey Dance Orchestra was formed in the 1920s by Arthur Storey, playing voilin & banjo, sister Rita-saxaphone,Jean and brothers Bob and Ben. Later, their mother, also Jean, an accomplished pianist and supporter of the orchestra, filled the pianist role after Jean left home to further her career. The car in the photograph was paid for with orchestra earnings. Their music involvement enabled a large family to sustain the farm during the 1920s and 1930s. World-War-Two intervened, this saw the Storey Orchestra disperse, Bob joined Jean in Melbourne, where they continued their musical careers. Ben joined the war effort, leaving Arthur on the farm. The semi-mythical stream, the Cooroopajerrup Creek. Before there were any channel banks and formed roads, this creek shared the Avoca flood waters with the Tyrrell Creek. In more recent times the Wycheproof channel prevented the major floods of 1956 and 1973 from following the old river course. Also there is said to have been some shifting of the sand-hills at Teddywaddy which have blocked much of the old Cooroopajerrup flow. Little is known of earlier records, but The Mount Wycheproof Ensign records flooding of the creek in 1909. 2011 saw the Cooroopajerrup flow again after 88 years. This 2011 photo was taken at about the same position as the 1923 photo. The author of this book, and many other similar books, was Sir John F. W. Herschel (John Frederick William), 1792-1871. He was a famous mathematician, astronomer, chemist and botanist. In 1838 he was created a baronet, of Slough in the County of Buckingham. The results of his research and discoveries are in use today. The book is part of Flagstaff Hill's Pattison Collection, a large group of books and records, some of which are rare and valuable. The collection was originally owned by the Warrnambool Mechanics' Institute, which was founded in 1853 and is named after Warrnambool's Public Librarian, Ralph Pattison. Thomas Longman founded his publishing firm in 1724 in London by the name Longman. In August of that year, he bought the two shops and goods of William Taylor and set up his publishing house there at 39 Paternoster Row. The shops were called Black Swan and Ship, and it is said that the 'ship' sign was the inspiration for Longman's Logo. After many changes of name and management, including Longman Brown Green Longman and Roberts, the firm was incorporated in 1926 as Longmans, Green & Co. Pty Ltd. The firm was acquired by Pearson in 1968 and was known as Pearson Longman or Pearson PLC. The book is significant for its association with the author, Sir John F W Herschel, and his discoveries and inventions, some of which are still used today.. The book is important for its connection with the London publisher Longmans, Green, Brown, Longmans and Roberts. The firm has been established for over two centuries and is renowned for publishing encyclopedias, dictionaries, books on English grammar, textbooks, poetry, reference books, novels, magazines and more. The book has additional importance for its connection to the Pattison Collection, which, along with other items at Flagstaff Hill Maritime Village, was originally part of the Warrnambool Mechanics' Institutes’ Collection. The Warrnambool Mechanics’ Institute book collection has historical and social significance for its strong association with the Mechanics Institute movement and its important role in people's intellectual, cultural and social development throughout the latter part of the nineteenth century and the early twentieth century. The collection of books is a rare example of an early lending library and its significance is enhanced by the survival of an original collection of many volumes. Belonged to the Melbourne Harbour Trust Commissionersarge, wooden, rectangular "Roll of Honour" board for the Melbourne Harbour Trust Commissioners. It was their honourary board for employees who went to the 1st World War. comprised of seven panels with names of people carved into them. The centre panel has "in Memorium' in brass lettering and is raised out from the three panels which flank it on either side. The main lettering across the top of the board is made from brass, and is attached to the wood. A circular brass crest is featured in the centre top of the board, which is flanked by carved gum leaves and nuts. A photo, that appeared in the magazine section of the Weekly Times in 1937, of Taylor's General Store and Cafe after a flood of the Stoney Creek. The creek flowed through the store at the height of the flood. The course of the creek was changed after this flood to prevent this happening again.A newspaper cutting. Annual wildflower shows took over the Hall's Gap Hall during spring and, in the 1930's, transformed it into a veritable wonderland. So popular were these displays that they have continued through until present times, the format has altered but the display of flowers remains the same. Ladies' Committees were formed to sell art and crafts during shows, and much of the revenue from these events went towards a future new building. The ticket shows that the admission price in 1933 was 1/- (one shilling). A comparison with Record 387 shows that the price had not risen from that rate in 1938. The Hon. Sec at this time was H. The store built by Jack Hemley. First Hemley's, then McIntosh's, then Taylor's and now (2010) Ralphy's. William John Taylor (1853-1921) was born in Little Eltham and lived his whole life in the town. He served as a Councillor for the Shire of Eltham 1890-191, which included one term as Shire President. He was a Justice of Peace and also a member of the Rechabite Lodge. He had a family of four daughters and one son. This photograph was taken in April 1915 when he was 62 years old. This photo forms part of a collection of photographs gathered by the Shire of Eltham for their centenary project book ,"Pioneers and Painters: 100 years of the Shire of Eltham" by Alan Marshall (1971). The collection of over 500 images is held in partnership between Eltham District Historical Society and Yarra Plenty Regional Library (Eltham Library) and is now formally known as 'The Shire of Eltham Pioneers Photograph Collection.'
