An article from the Bulletin about Legatee Frank Doolan speaking about the origins of the Lone Pine Project which was the subject of a short paper presented by Melbourne Legacy to the Perth conference. In the speech he talks about the role the 24th Battalion in the evacuation of Gallipoli. "the 24th Battalion mounted the gallant rearguard of 33 men who at the evacuation were left behind to keep up the pretence that the Lone Pine Trenches were still occupied. They destroyed the remaining guns, and embarked before daylight twenty minutes before the appointed time, and less than two hours before a storm blew up which would have made withdrawal impossible. Amongst those named in the history of the Lone Pine campaign on Gallipoli were: Lieut. S G Savige, Lieut. H C Brinsmead, Lieut John Anderson, R.Q.M.S. Frank Selleck - all of whom were foundation members of Melbourne Legacy. The article was part of an album of past presidents from 1965 to 1989. An article from the Melbourne Legacy Bulletin in 1986 on the death of Legatee Donovan Joynt VC. a long serving Legatee. The first three pages are the VALE notice and then there were additional pages about his VC citation and his life. The Bulletin published articles on Legatees when they passed away. When Legatee Joynt passed away on 5 May 1986, he was the club's oldest member and was an original member of the Legacy movement from 1923. The article includes his service to Legacy. It mentions his war service beginning with joining the Victorian Rifles in 1911. He served with the 8th Infantry battalion in Egypt and Europe. He was mentioned in despatches for conspicuous service in 4 famous battles, Ploygon Wood, at Guerudecourt, at River Lys defending Hazebrouck and when he won the VC at Chuignes near Villers-Bretonneux. In 1964 Legacy was involved with the release of a rose that was dedicated to Legacy. It as a raised bush variety by RT Hamilton, Heidelberg. It is a deep rose pink, reliably splashed with white, large double and well-formed exhibition blooms. The proceeds of the sale of the plants were donated to Melbourne Legacy. A note in the folder of correspondence shows in 1964 over £344 was remitted to Legacy and £159 in 1965. The rose was profiled in the Legacy Bulletin on 22/9/64 and again on 12/10/65. The rose was featured on a Christmas card that was sold to promote Legacy. In 1974 a rose was released as 'Legacy Jubilee' which was a yellow with the tips of the petals suffused red. Two page summary of the life of Ivan Layton. During World War 2 he served in the South West Pacific area as a signaller in the Australia Corps of Signals, 2nd AIF. He became personal Staff Captain for General Blamey. After the war he was the CEO of Legacy for 30 years. His secretary for 14 years was Wendy Faulkner who related that he loved theatre and was a great friend of Gracie Fields. Among his friends were Nurse Vivian Bullwinkle and Weary Dunlop. He retired from Legacy in June 1979 after serving for 30 years, and was nominated to become a member of Legacy. He passed away on 15 September 1979. Another source of information on Ivan Layton is when he was a 'Guest of Honour' at a Legacy function. A Vale notice that was published in the Bulletin in 1986 on the death of Legatee Cecil Waters. After the death of his father in WW1 Cecil Waters became a junior legatee from 1926. So he was among the first batch of Junior Legatees. He joined the Intermediate Legacy Club and served a term as President of the ILC. During WW2 he served in the Middle East and South West Pacific area from 1941 to 1946, completing his service as a Captain with the 2/1st Aust Beach Detachment. After his war service he was eligible to join Legacy as a Legatee. He was proposed by Legatee Len Frazer and seconded by Legatee Frank Doolan. He married Stan Savige's daughter, Gwen in 1954 and they had a son Stanley Waters. Ill health caused him to be placed on Reserve in 1962. He served on the Co-ordinating Council for many years. In World War One he had served on Gallipoli and in France and Belgium. In 1917 he was severely gassed which impacted his health and eyesight in later years His professional career was as an actuary and his forecasts helped make many policy decisions in Legacy. A caricature drawing labelled 'Melbourne Good Samaritans - The Legacy Club', of the early Legatees with their names, roles and some characteristics. The artist was 'Wells' and it was reprinted in the Weekly bulletin in 1979. It was also printed in Blatchford's book in 1932 with the caption 'Some Club Leaders in 1928'. Many of these names appear through the archive but very few have photos, so this is one of the few examples of what some the early Legatees looked like. An article from the Melbourne Legacy Bulletin about Legatee Jim Gillespie being honoured by RMIT naming a building after him. Date is not known but likely to be 1969 or 1970. The article mentions 'an honour was conferred on Legatee (Past President) Jim Gillespie when the Governor and Lady Delacombe opens a new wing of the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology and called it 'The Gillespie Wing". The magnificent building of 12 stories accommodates 2490 persons (2290 students and 200 staff). A page of the programme was set out to list Jim's decorations, war service, and professional achievements and awards and his immense contribution to the RMIT extending over more than 30 years. Also that in 1968 in recognition of his proud record of service to the profession he was awarded the Gold Medal of the Institution of Surveyors Australia, and is the only person to be so honoured at the time. The letter outlines the purpose of the Appeal and how it will be launched by the Governor Sir Dallas Brookes and the timeline. Also that it had support from four leading newspapers and radio stations. It mentions a brochure "the Legacy Boy" and a brochure depicting the new building that will be mailed to Companies that Legatees had contacted (see 01264).
