This image is one of a series of photographs taken by Melbourne based photographers Stevenson and McNicoll who visited Bacchus Marsh and its nearby districts between September and November 1883. The house was built for Dr. Rae in 1880 following his retirement from his medical practice due to ill health. He lived there until his death. Dr. Vance then occupied it for a short time. It was bought by the sisters of St. Joseph in 1890 and formed the nucleus of St. Joseph’s Convent. It was demolished in the early years of the twentieth century, when a new two-storey brick convent was built.Small sepia 'carte de viste' style unframed photograph on card with gold border framing photograph. This booklet was given to subscribers to the Warrambool Standard newspaper as an almanac for the year 1883. These Standard almanacs were produced from 1875 to 1930. They contain much local information on Warrnambool and district about the businesses, government officials, schools, societies and organizations, harbour management, churches, banks etc. The Warrnambool Standard newspaper was established in 1872 and continues to this day. This booklet is of high significance as it contains much valuable information on Warrnambool and district for the year 1883. It is a very valuable research tool for those studying and writing the history of Warrnambool and district. The copy is signed ‘G. Barber’ and probably this refers to the son of George Barber, a well-known solicitor who opened a legal practice in Warrnambool in 1855. He died in 1879 and it appears that a member or members of his family went to live in the Maryborough area as this copy came into the collection of the Warrnambool and District Historical Society via the Midlands Historical Society. This is a soft cover booklet of 72 pages plus several pages of a gardener’s calendar and 20 pages of advertisements. The cover is yellow with black lettering and the spine is partly torn away. There is a fold-out page of the Western District’s railway and coach routes and the pages on the tourist’s guide to Warrnambool are printed in green. The booklet contains several black and white illustrations. There are several pages that are torn with parts of the pages missing. The front cover has the name of ‘G. George Taylor was in business in Bacchus Marsh from 1866. He built these premises in Main Street in 1868 and remained in business until 1888 when Samuel Painter brought the property and operated his own saddlery business. The location was later used for the State Savings Bank of Victoria and the Bank of New South Wales (Westpac). The Methodist Book Depot was inaugurated in 1857 but it was not until 1859 that authorisation was given to to import a stock of books from England. At the time of its centenary the Methodist Book Depot was at 265 Little Collins Street, Melbourne.Grey card covered booklet with gold text on the cover. The Court House in Main Street Bacchus Marsh was built in 1858 using local sandstone. It opened in 1859. It has been used for jury trials, a Court of Petty Sessions, a County Court and a Crown Land sales office. Other uses included an office for the Registrar of Births and Deaths, a Dairy Inspectors office from 1863-1865, and as meeting rooms for the Bacchus Marsh Roads Board, a forerunner of the Shire Council. It was also used by the Bacchus Marsh Shire Council for its offices until at least 1884. In more recent years it has functioned as a Magistrates Court with weekly court sessions. He has his dog with him. A white picket fence runs along the front of the building. The Little Wonder Store was built in 1883 from materials of the demolished Maddingley School. It was located on the corner of Grant Street and Labilliere Street. In 1886 James Alford obtained a licence to conduct the Railway Hotel and General Store there. A second storey was added later and the building continued to operate as the Railway Hotel. It was destroyed by fire in 1998. The photo also shows the covered wagon of a travelling salesman, who were known as ‘hawkers’, who were significant in the supply of goods and news to outlying towns and districts before the development of road and rail networks. This image shows the house occupied by Thomas Mason and his family in 1883. The man in the centre of the image holding the reins of the horse is possibly Thomas Mason. One of the two women seated in the buggy is possibly his wife Catherine Mason (nee Whelan). This house was built by grazier George Palmer Hall around 1846-1848 north of what is now Lerderderg Street, Bacchus Marsh, at a point close to the Lerderderg RIver. The house and the accompanying farm of over 5,000 hectares was leased by George Ball to George Hobler in the late 1840s and early 1850s. During this time George Hobler's daughter Emily married Henry Bacchus the son of Captain William Bacchus. By 1865 Thomas Mason had purchased the property. Mason named the property Riverton. After his death in the 1890s the property was owned by a number of different people. The house was still in use until 1999 but since this time has been unoccupied and its condition has significantly deteriorated.This image is significant because it depicts one of the earliest houses built in the town of Bacchus Marsh. It is probably the earliest surviving image of this Bacchus Marsh pre-gold rush structure.Small sepia unframed photograph on card with gold border framing photograph. John Simpson arrived in Bacchus Marsh around 1848. In 1850 he established a butchery business. He continued to operate this business in Main Street Bacchus Marsh until his death in 1890. His son John Simpson and one of his brothers, Edward took over the business and operated it until 1923. John Simpson the younger died in 1940 having lived all but a few months of his 92 years in Main Street Bacchus Marsh. Edward L. Simpson died in Corowa, NSW in 1937. The younger John Simpson's recollections of Bacchus Marsh in the 1850s to 1870s were published in the Bacchus Marsh Express on the 25 June 1932.Small sepia unframed photograph on card with gold border framing photograph.
