This nursing chair is part of a special bequest to the Mont De Lancey Museum of hand carved furniture and items made by Mr Franz Striezel by his grandaughter Mrs Dorothy Hilda Adamson. Dorothy was a friend of Nella Lord (nee Sebire). Dorothy passed away in 2007. It was to be known as The Franz Striezel Collection. Franz Streizel came from Germany in 1886 and was one of the three recognised craftsmen (Art Carvers) in Australia who contributed to the wood carvings in public buildings and honour boards throughout Australia. The National Gallery at their request had two small panels and a tobacco jar (some of his work), donated by Mrs D Adamson. They considered these pieces highly valuable. An ornately hand carved dark wooden heavy nursing chair with a carved figure of a child and gargoyles on the front of the back rest. The seat is highly patterned too. A heavily inlaid veneer two door cabinet with carved Egyptian style heads in the middle of each door set in a triangular pattern. Portland Quilters Exhibition, 1-28 February 2006, Portland Arts Centre.Hand and machine pieced and appliqued quilt. Central depiction of the Portland bay with jettie, breakwater and Port. Scene includes fishing boats, ships, tug boats, a whale, foreshore with several buildings and a bluff with a lighthouse. Central image edged in blue fabric quilting. Surrounding this are 20 printed images of old buildings taken from sketches contained in 'The Portland of Jack Adamson' by Joe Wiltshire (book). Outside boder is blue quilted fabric. This small kettle was from the home of Mrs Streizel and the family of Mrs Adamson. Kettles were used as a domestic item to boil water safely without the concern that the metal may contain lead or arsenic as earlier utensils had. The household depended on constant hot water availability for all cooking, washing and other household chores. These small kettles would have been used perhaps at the table to add water to the teapot instead of using the heavy large cast iron ones over the open fire or on the stove. This one is from the early 1900's.A small dark blue enamel hot water kettle with a black curved moveable handle riveted onto the top sides and a goose neck spout. Drawing done on location by Francis John 'Curly' Papworth whilst serving in Katherine, Northern Territory during World War Two. This work of soldiers is significant as a work produced by a serving soldier on location during WWII and is a unique example of an artistic work showing the men and their surroundings at the time.
