The RAAF retained the Ballarat airfield as its Radio School until 1961. The then-Shire of Ballarat negotiated with the Department of Interior to become the civil operator of the airfield and sought the maintenance on site of the hangars and other structures, however a majority of the P Huts were sold by the Commonwealth. (Wikipedia) Sir William Hudson was a New Zealand-born engineer who headed construction of the Snowy Mountains Scheme for hydroelectricity and irrigation in Australia from 1949 to 1967, when he reluctantly retired at 71. The scheme was completed in 1974, under budget and before time. (Wikipedia)A car with the registration plates HFP949 is stopped by a number of male students from the Ballarat School of Mines. The photograph of St Mary's Anglican Church at Bulla was taken before the completion of the airport at Tullamarine. Originally the church occupied a site on Oaklands Road near the Old Bulla Road. It was shifted to its present site in Bulla next to the old council chambers when the airport was built because the old site was near an important runway.A black and white photograph of a partial view of a bluestone church showing a rear and side view. Document - Manuscript, Robin Boyd, The Shanty Town at Tullamarine, 1971
Discusses the reasons for Sydney's and Melbourne's new airports. Discusses the transformation from picturesque landscape to a growth of unordered supplementary structures surrounding airports (motels, sheds, storage rooms, petrol stations, shopping mall). Boyd predicts this "shanty town" image will only get worse, and critiques the image of Australia first presented to international visitors.Original manuscript of an article published in "The Sunday Australian", 27.06.1971Typewritten (c copy), quarto, 8 pagesNumbered in 13 paragraphstullamarine airport, international airport, melbourne's shanty town, robin boyd, manuscript -
