The creative aspect was important in a time where their lives were governed mainly by destruction. By creating such things they were partially able to restore their own humanity. HMAS Sydney was paid off in 1928 and broken up in 1929 and sunk off Sydney Heads. Crews of ships such as the Orontes and the Orsova were regular donors to the Mission in the 20th century. Launched in 1929, the Orient Line passenger ship SS Orontes was one of the longest serving on the England to Australia route, carrying tens of thousands of British and European migrants to new lives in Australia from 1948 to 1962 and Nicholas Garlick may have worked on the ship during that time. The Maroondah System was first and foremost developed as a functional component of Melbourne's Water Supply System. In addition to functionality, the Melbourne and Metropolitan Board of Works (MMBW) envisioned the Maroondah Reserve to be enjoyed aesthetically and recreationally by the public. This souvenir illustrates the realisation of the Maroondah System as a local recreational and tourist attraction in the early 20th century. The Maroondah Reserve gardens were landscaped with English-style ornamental stonework, exotic trees, flower beds and rose gardens. All features of the water supply system became widely celebrated as beauty spots that continue to be very popular to this day with tourists and locals alike. This souvenir is a product of that flourishing tourist trade. The item dates from the years of Dutch influence in the region which ended in 1962. The region is now known as West Papua.As the above urls will show, West Papua's history is a complex one with various colonial powers disputing ownership with the local inhabitants. Modern Indonesia also lays claim to it. The area was part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands from 1949 till 1962. Prior to 1949 it was part of the Dutch East Indies.
