Historically significant for at the time it demonstrated aspects of the evolution of Ballarat Tramways and yields information about the formation of the tramways, the Councils viewpoint and has a strong association with the Mayor of the time.Twenty two page book, produced by photocopying, side stapled and bound with a red plastic binding, titled "Mayor's Special Report Ballarat Tramways", dated 20 September 1971 for presentation to the City of Ballaarat Council Meeting 27 Sept. 1971 and signed by the Mayor, J.A.Chisholm. Note pages 18 and 19 have been reversed. Comprises: Page 1 - map (image 1829i1) - of Ballarat (Ballaarat) showing the horse tram routes in red (appear to have been drawn in with a red pencil). Inside pages, missing pages 23 to 26 (see note below) printed on semi gloss paper with district information and Advertisements. Pages 7 to 11 loose - due to removal of other pages. Centre stapled. Page 1 has a table of contents, giving municipal and district information including banks, clubs, Councillors, Hospitals, JP's Industries, Medical, Newspapers, Parks, Places of interest, schools, train and bus timetables and trams (see note below). Ballarat Tramway Museum South Gardens Reserve Wendouree ...Yields information about a system of tram passes that were provided to the City of Ballarat Councillors in 1960 and has a strong association with the Councillors himself.Stamped brass badge or pass for free travel on the Ballarat Tramways for the year 1906. Stamped to give the words "Ballarat Electric Trams 1906" on the outer edge of the Badge and then stamped out to give the letters 'B E T" on the inside of the badge. On the top of the badge, a hole has been provided and a steel ring fitted. On the rear of the badge has the letters "CR. T. J. Hoare" stamped on the top of the badge and on the bottom the manufacturer's name "Stokes" in a reverse stamp. Indicates badge issued to the Councillor for the year 1906. Has a strong association with the horse tram era and demonstrates methods of display.Printed original Ballaarat Tramway Co. horse tram by laws placed on a cut sheet of glass, for use in the trams themselves. Printed onto heavy paper/card. Facsimile (Reg Item 773) made from the item recovered from Horse Tram No. 1 in 1986. Gives details of the Acts under which the by-law was made. By Law made by the City of Ballaarat, dated 6th April 1889. Gazetted 5 April 1889. Signed by the Mayor, J. G. McDonald, two Councillors William Little and David Cooke, and Town Clerk Geo. Perry. 1879 - The Argus, Friday 11 July 1879, page 4. The Kew Borough Council having decided to initiate a fire brigade, invited volunteers to send in their names. About 40 complied with the invitation and met at the Town-hall to choose 12 of their number to form the brigade. The 12 elected then chose their officers as follows :— Councillor Gray, captain ; Mr. Thomas Greenhill, foreman ; and Mr. H. Loxton, secretary. The brigade decided to apply to the council for uniforms and a bell; and after adopting rules for their guidance the meeting separated. The brigade now possesses a reel and 500ft. of hose, and a shed is being erected in Little Walpole-street for a station. The council have applied for six additional fireplugs in the Main-road, so that the brigade may now be considered fairly established. 1886 - Globe (Sydney), Tuesday 16 March 1886, page 8 The Kew Fire Brigade, which obtained the pride of place at the recent fire brigades' demonstration, at Sandhurst, was met on their return at Spencer-street Railway Station by the Mayor and Councillors of that suburb, and were subsequently entertained at the Greyhound Hotel. 1886 - South Bourke and Mornington Journal, Wednesday 17 March 1886, page 2 It may be, deemed remarkable, but nevertheless a fact, 'that the Kew Fire Brigade, comparatively a new one, has gained premier place at the recent contest of brigades held at Ballarat, winning two first prizes and two second. On returning they were met at the station and escorted to Kew, preceded by the Borough banner. Certificate awarded to the Kew Volunteer Fire Brigade as an award for winning 'the best average time' in competition at Sandhurst. Surrounding the team's photo are a series of individual oval named portraits of the team. This framed version of the certificate, (there are two in the collection) is less faded than the framed version.The photograph without the mount (2016.0097a) has been digitally enhanced. Mayoresses made important contributions to their local communities through their charity work and as ambassadors for their region on a state and federal level. They also undertook some Mayoral duties on occasions when their husband was unavailable. George Smith was a noted nurseryman and seedsman who founded the Royal Exotic Nurseries at Lake Wendouree. The Claxton monument in front of the Fernery in the Ballarat Botanical Gardens was made to honour a respected citizen and was erected after his death due to public subscription. F.M.
