William Frederick Mawson was born in 1893 to Frederick William and Mary Mawson. Prior to the war, William was employed for 5 years as a carpenter with his older brother John who was a partner in Garrett & Mawson, architects and builders of Box Hill. At the age of 22, he enlisted on the 15 July 1915 and was assigned to the 5th Field Company of Engineers, training as a sapper. William served for nearly 2 years and was killed in 1917, only months before the end of the war whilst putting up barbed wire at Oestoik.
