Doctor HAROLD ROBERT CATFORD was the first to be made a Life Member of the Bendigo RSL Sub Branch. The certificate was signed on the 8th Day of May 1947. He was first elected to Committee of the Bendigo Branch in 1918 and retired after 29 years at the AGM 1947 serving the whole time as Vice President. Doctor Harold Robert Catford enlisted as a Captain on 23.6.15 age 41 years and attached to HQ 29th Batt AIF. Embarked for overseas 10.11.15, transfer to 8th Field Ambulance 6.10.16. At various times he was attached to 5th Div Ammunition Column and 2nd A.C.C. Station, promoted to Major 24.8.17. He returned to Australia on 26.9.17 for personal reasons and his appointment in the AIF was terminated on 11.12.17. from 1.1.18 he was RMO to several military units including the 38th Batt in Peace time. Promoted to Lt Col on 19.4.23, placed on the AAMC reserve list 30.1.30 and then the retired list 30.1.1934. Life membership certificate of the Bendigo RSL awarded to Dr HR Catford. Certificate is set in a yellowish cardboard frame inside a silver wooden frame. The certificate is in colour with a red seal and signatures of Federal President and Secretary of the RSSILA. The Servicemen's Club was owned by a Co Operative of the 3 Bendigo RSL's being Bendigo, Kangaroo Flat & Eaglehawk Sub Branches'. The Co Operative Society remained until the year 2000 when the facility became the "Bendigo & District RSL Club Inc". The membership re David Patterson 1978. He was a Bendigo RSL delegate for the Co Operative Society for its entire time until closure in 2000. This mobility aid was housed under the old stage area of the Soldiers Memorial Institute building in Pall Mall Bendigo. When the renovations to the building began in late 2016 the Aid was removed and restored by the Bendigo District RSL Men in Sheds program and is now on display in the same building now called Bendigo Military Museum. The Soldiers Memorial was the HQ of the Bendigo RSL Sub Branch. It is not known the origin of the Aid but it was most likely used by disabled Bendigo RSL members post WW1.Three wheeled Mobility Aid. Front wheel is 41cm dia pneumatic, 32mm wide, rear wheel 68cm dia, width 52mm wide. The right wheel axle has a sprocket & chain assembly, the left is free wheeling, both have mud guards. Frame is tubular steel painted reddish colour, the seat and back rest are brown leather, seat sides are timber, there are two timber platforms in front, the top one is adjustable the bottom one is fixed. The chair is steered via a long metal handle fixed to the wheel frame. Both reports re Appeals being "ANZAC Tokens and Poppy Appeal" both topped the $2,000.00 mark which was a first, something they were striving for to reach that mark. Welfare details a number of areas they dealt with. The Appeals & Welfare Officer was Ernest Alfred Jackman. He served on Committee of the Bendigo Sub Branch in 1961 - 62 and 1973. He was on the Welfare Sub committee for 15years and Welfare Officer 1975 - 78. He was the Appeals Officer from 1960 - 1994. The medallion is a 1951 Commemorative being 100 years of Government and discovery of gold in Victoria. The winner K.M. Mcleod is believed to be Kenneth Meadowbank McCleod. He enlisted initially in 1915 but was discharged medically unfit in 1916, re enlisted in 1917 No 3840 and served in the 4th LH Regt, discharged from the AIF on 6.12.1919. Refer Cat No 1805P. There were two Billiard Tables in the Soldiers Memorial Institute in what was called the Billiard room. This was a source of income for the Bendigo Branch for some 70 years.
