Frederick William Knuckey enlisted on 14.2.16 in HQ's 38th Batt AIF No 66. WIA 14.11.17 (gassed). Hospital 23.5.18 with Myalgia. Drowned at sea as a result of torpedoing by a German submarine. Doctor HAROLD ROBERT CATFORD was the first to be made a Life Member of the Bendigo RSL Sub Branch. The certificate was signed on the 8th Day of May 1947. He was first elected to Committee of the Bendigo Branch in 1918 and retired after 29 years at the AGM 1947 serving the whole time as Vice President. Doctor Harold Robert Catford enlisted as a Captain on 23.6.15 age 41 years and attached to HQ 29th Batt AIF. Embarked for overseas 10.11.15, transfer to 8th Field Ambulance 6.10.16. At various times he was attached to 5th Div Ammunition Column and 2nd A.C.C. Station, promoted to Major 24.8.17. He returned to Australia on 26.9.17 for personal reasons and his appointment in the AIF was terminated on 11.12.17. from 1.1.18 he was RMO to several military units including the 38th Batt in Peace time. Promoted to Lt Col on 19.4.23, placed on the AAMC reserve list 30.1.30 and then the retired list 30.1.1934. Life membership certificate of the Bendigo RSL awarded to Dr HR Catford. Certificate is set in a yellowish cardboard frame inside a silver wooden frame. The certificate is in colour with a red seal and signatures of Federal President and Secretary of the RSSILA. Jack received his OAM on Australia day 1995 from the Honourable Richard McGarvie (refer Cat No 8045P) for his work as a volunteer with ex service personnel in the Bendigo RSL Sub Branch at the Soldiers Memorial Institute Bendigo. This item was hung in the Gallery of Honour, foyer of the Soldiers Memorial Institute since 11.11.1929. Commissioned by Drum Major WM DARWIN to comrades & citizens of his native city, Bendigo. After closure of the SMI for renovations 2016 - 18 the item was placed in what is now called the "Building and RSL History Room" William Darwin No 780 enlisted on 18.8.1914 age 22 years in G Coy 7th BN AIF. Embark for Eygpt 19.10.1914, Hospital 15.3.1915 - 3.5.1915, embark for Gallipoli 5.4.1915, promoted to Act/Sgt 28.8.1915, on 28.9.1915 he was buried in an explosion and dug out 3/4 hours later, was unconcious for 2/3 days and had a leg wound. In amongst this he appears to have got Typhoid and never comes out of Hospital till 13.3.1916. This map originally came via Mitiamo East Loddon RSL who when they closed their Sub branch the map and their records were handed to the Bendigo RSL for safe keeping. The mine was the “Hustlers Royal Reserve Mine No 2” and was closed in 1912. The Soldiers Memorial Institute was erected on the mine site and opened on 15.11.1921 and occupied by the Bendigo RSL Sub Branch/Bendigo District RSL Sub Branch Inc since then. Walter Peake No 6/1688 N.Z.E.F. He was from Bendigo and enlisted in New Zealand. He was " Mentioned in Despatches". This framed photo was one of a number that originally hung in the foyer "Gallery of Honour" at the Soldiers Memorial institute Pall Mall Bendigo which is now the Bendigo Military Museum. Thomas William Francis No 2584. Enlisted on 7.7.1915 in 4th reinforcements 29th Batt AIF age 25 years 6 months. Embarked for Eygpt 14.3.16, embark for France 16.6.1916, reported missing 19/20.7.1916, listed as KIA 20.7.16 (Fromelles) no known grave. The photo is one of a number that originally hung in the "Gallery of Honour" foyer of the Soldiers Memorial Institute Pall Mall Bendigo now the Bendigo Military Museum. In 2008 a mass grave was found with 250 remains in. On 12.4.2013 it was announced that the remains of Thomas Francis had been identified. In the top photo there are only a couple who are identifiable, 3rd from the left is Jack Swatton, (refer Cat No 6719.2P), 4th from left is George Lansell, (refer Cat No 8012P), there is one other from the left being possibly Les Morey The same Les Morey is in the bottom photo 8th from the left. These images are a copy of of the originals which were joined together and laminated as one. They were not taken the same year. Just by appearance the top photo is a number of years earlier than the bottom. There is an original of the top photo still in its cardboard cylinder for postage. The photo in .2) cylinder is an original of the top photo in .1) in front of the Soldiers Memorial Institute. Even though it says 1951 this is not a certainty for both. It has not been taken out for proper photography due to its fragile state. There are a few that have been identified in both who were well known. Top photo. Standing 2nd from the left is Jack Swatton, next to him is George Lansell, further along standing at rear is a tall man Les Morey with black hair and greyish suit. Bottom photo. On the far right standing is Jack Swatton, in the front row sitting central is possibly George Lansell, two men to his right are looking at him, in the rear 8th from the left is Les Morey. These two images are most likely at the opening of the Bendigo District Servicemen’s Club after the renovations finished early in 1994. On the left is Bill Clarke, next to him is Max O’Haloran. William (Bill) Clarke was President of the Servicemen’s Club from 1992 - 96. Max O’Haloran was President of the Club 1991 - 2, he was also President of the Bendigo RSL on two occasions. This a large item as per the dimensions. Due to the placement behind a large glass cabinet makes getting a decent image due to all the background light and other material. The plaque goes a long way to an explanation. This item is on display in the front Foyer entrance of the Bendigo District RSL Sub Branch in Havilah Road. The description outlines the the Kokoda Campaign from July 1942 to November 1942. The track is 96 K’s or then it was 60 miles over the Owen Stanley Ranges in New Guinea. Australian casualties were 625 KIA, 1600 WIA and a huge 4,000 casualties due to illness. Over the years there has been many discussions as to whether it is a “trail” or a”track”. Bendigo RSL Sub Branch Annual reports. Initially in the front are two photo copies of Annual report and balance sheets for the years 1934 & 1952 under the title R.S.S.A.I.L.A. The first original entry is for the year 1964, the last for the year 2000. There is one RSL Museum Annual report for the year 2000. There are also three x RSL Women’s Auxiliary reports for the the years 1990,1954 & 1996. There is also a number of Annual Welfare & Appeals reports. This one appears to be Model 27 from the early 1950's. This radio was last used in the Office at the Soldiers Memorial Institute most likely pre 1990's.Radio, ASTOR brand, brown Bakelite frame, the glass face has two control knobs. This sign was situated outside the Soldiers Memorial Institute building in Pall Mall Bendigo. It was in the centre space of the Portico. It was taken down approximately 1999 - 2000 due to damage. This sign was used in the Billiard room of the Soldiers Memorial Institute Bendigo RSL. Years ago when the Billiard room had a section divided off for part of a Caretakers Residence it was placed on the internal roof of the residence. It was mainly used at RSL meetings. When the RSL Meetings moved to the B&DRSL Club Inc it was used during the day when the Museum was open. After the renovations to the Soldiers memorial in 2018 it was placed in what is now the Building & RSL History room of the BMM.Sign, timber construction box shape, illuminated faces front and rear with the RSL Logo in colour. As stated the roll is from 1939 through to 2005. In 2004/5 The Eaglehawk Sub Branch of the RSL wound down and amalgamated with the Bendigo District RSL Sub Branch Inc. The Sub branch initially from 1939 - 1943 rented a building located at 18 - 22 High St Eaglehawk. The Mathews bros then donated it to the Sub Branch in 1943 as per the plaque Cat No 8117. The Sub branch moved to a new building which was a Nissan Hut at No 2A Market Place in Eaglehawk 1957. This building was opened as per the plaque Cat No 8118. The original plaque Cat No 8117 was moved to the new building as well. The Branch remained there until they amalgamated with Bendigo.
