The Melbourne Cup Carnival covers four days of racing and includes the Melbourne Cup, Derby Day, Oaks Day and the Champion Stakes. The four day carnival began in 1869. The first Melbourne Cup was run in 1861, and Derby day in 1856. In 1899 the winner of the Melbourne Cup was Merriwee who also won the Derby that year. At that time the Champions Stakes was called the Mackinnon Stakes, named after Lachlan Kenneth Scobie Mackinnon, a previous chairman of the Victorian Racing Club. In 1899 the race for age race was won by Mora. The Oaks is a race for 3yo fillies racing over one and a half miles in 1899 when it was won by Nitre.Large ledger book probably from Arthur Allsop. Includes the starting prices wagers of horse races in Victoria and the Commercial Bank records of deposits and withdrawals. It covers the years from 1897 to 1922. With the book there is also a handwritten letter to Arthur recording the bets of A. Connell and W.P. Greg Stockdale was a champion for Essendon in the 1920s; he won the VFL goal kicking in 1923 with a then-record 68 goals; he won Essendon's Best and Fairest Award in 1925.Circular gold medal with small scroll and loop at top and larger metal ring through small loop; centre of medal has been cut out leaving E F C; E is coloured with red enamel; F and C are coloured with black enamel; each letter is outlined in gold. Many believe this cost Essendon the premiership.The letter is significant because it is one of the few hand-written letters by John Coleman held by the Hall of FameSheet of cream writing paper with pale blue lines and buff envelope; handwritten letter (VEF 2230.2.1) in dark blue ink from John Coleman to Mrs Geary thanking her for her kind words over his suspension against Carlton and subsequent missing of the Grand Final. Event at the St Kilda Town Hall in recognition of the St Kilda Cricket Club First Eleven winning the VCA Premiership in four successive seasons - 1923-24, 1924-25, 1925-26, 1926-27. A smoke social was a predominantly Australian form of male only social event in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century, until about the 1940s, where men would gather to smoke. This trophy was important in the years 1983-1988 as it recorded the winners of the prestigious Road Race run by the Geelong West Cycling Club over those years. The 1985 winner - Don Wilson was a two time Australian Open Road Race champion and also represented Australia in the 1968 Olympic Games in Mexico in the cycling road race. This trophy records the winners of a Road Race run by the Geelong West Cycling Club during the years 1983-1988.Trophy for winner of the Penn Memorial Road Race. The trophy is in the shape of a gateway with one silver representation of a cyclist on the top of the gateway and another on a pedestal in the middle of the gateway. The two inner supports to the gate have a stylised decorative pattern on them in black, gold and red. On the left hand upright winners' names have been engraved. Russell Mockridge b1928 d1958 was described 'as the greatest cyclist of all time'. He died during a race in collision with a bus that also claimed the lives of two fellow riders and a spectator. Mockridge started in 1946 by winning his first race of 40km with the Geelong Amateur Cycling Club. His wins soon earned him the nickname of the Geelong Flyer. He represented Australia at the London Olympic Games in 1948 and the Helsinki Games in 1952. He also represented Australia in the 1950 British Empire Games in Auckland where he took gold in the 1000 sprint and the 1000m time trial and silver in the 4000m pursuit. In Paris 1952 he won the Amateur Grand Prix and the following day the Open Grand Prix, beating world professional champion Reg Harris. Later that year he won Manchester Wheelers Club Muratti Cup again beating Reg Harris. He turned professional a year later and teamed with Sid Patterson and Roger Arnold to win the Paris 6 day race in 1955. Mockridge was one of 60 of 150 entrants to finish the 1955 Tour de France. He won 12 consecutive Australian championships. Mockridge was married and had a daughter, Melinda (1955)Russell Mockridge was described 'as the greatest cyclist of all time'. He achieved international notoriety as a cyclist from the mid 1940s until his death in 1958, representing Australia in the Olympic games, the Commonwealth Games, The Tour de France and other international high profile cycling events.Framed print of Russell Mockridge in cycling attire. The 2005 winner - Leigh Howard, was a professional rider with Team Colombia in 2010 and is currently on the pro tour with Orica Green Edge (commencing 2012). The story behind that is that a cup appeared at the Golf Club (its unknown where it came from) which was inscribed with 1927 J. McCully Peterborough Golf club Open Champion. It was probably not referring to this Peterborough but this club did not hold an Open Championship at that time, so it was decided that they would. The first Open championship was held in 1980 but the record from 1927 was included as it was impetus behind the decision to hold the Open Championship, which continues to this day. Photograph of Girls Interhouse Sports Champions in 1931. Between the 1920’s and 1950’s the YWCA, Blue Triangle and local committee of representatives organised an Inter House Athletics Day for Girls in Geelong and Melbourne. Local Geelong business, such as the surrounding woollen mills, business firms and church clubs would form teams of seven women to compete in a variety of sports such as bowls, basketball, hockey, cricket and soccer.
