January 1869 at the first land sale in Cowes, John West bought Lot 1 for £45 . In the 1870's he built the first Chicory Kiln on Phillip Island. With his brother, Solomon, he started the General Store next to the Chicory Kiln in Thompson Avenue. This was Arnie Brown's house in the main street of Cowes. Arnie lived at Hastings, but came to live on Phillip Island in 1908. One of the best known boatman - he provided fishing trips for visitors. Shire Hall in Thompson Avenue, Cowes. Built early 1930's. Demolished 1984/1985. The Shire Hall was also used as a Picture Theatre and Ballroom catering for 200 persons. Built as a home for Mrs Jessie Smith - it was later used as a billiard room and finally as the Penguin Cafe. Mrs Smith was a member of the 'Small' Family of San Remo. She was the only Estate Agent in Cowes until 1954. Mrs Smith was in her late nineties when she died in 1977.The Penguin Cafe was built as a home for Mrs Jessie Smith. The site on the corner of Thompson Avenue and Church Street, Cowes was reserved on the 12th April 1869 and the church was erected by the end of the year. Financed by the Island Church of England people. Dean McCartney preached the first sermon and performed the dedication service on 30th January 1870. Prior to this time services were held at the McHaffie homestead, Ventnor. Mrs S D (Georgianna) McHaffie, wife of the first European settlers, wrote in her diary "30th January 1870. Drove to Cowes, opened the Church, fine day". the large Bible presented by her is on loan and displayed in the Museum of the Phillip Island & District Historical Society.The timber Anglican Church of St Philips was built by Alex McLardy Sen. in 1869. It is still situated in Thompson Avenue on the corner of Church Street. The Vestry was added by Mr Alex McLardy in 1903 at the cost of 21 pounds. The land in Chapel Street was granted by the Presbyterian Church in 1869. A church was finally built by Alex McLardy at a cost of £127 and was dedicated in august 1895. The first Presbyterian Church services held on Phillip Island in 1889 were conducted under a tree in the open air. May 1890 Dr. Alexander Robb was appointed the first Minister and continued until his death 11 years later. 1929 an annex was built providing more accommodation. 1968 the joint Presbyterian and Methodist congregation was formed. In 1975 a new building was dedicated.St John's Uniting Church, Chapel Street, Cowes. Large wooden structure combining Church and Hall. In 1971 the building committee commissioned an architect who designed the building with an unusual roof structure which reflected the concept of a keel of a ship - appropriate for the setting of a building by the sea. When the only link to the mainland was by sea, the Cowes Jetty Shed - built in 1870 - was used to store incoming goods to Phillip Island. The Shed is one of the oldest buildings on Phillip Island and one of the few with the distinctive curved roof. The Shed was restored in 1992. The Ventnor School had its beginning in the Ventnor Hall, which was built by parents of the children. It was opened on 5th May 1915 and Miss Ruby Bright was the first Head Teacher. Later an area was purchased from Mr Thomas Jones and a new school was erected at a cost of £790.2.6. James Cook was a British explorer, navigator, cartographer, and captain in the Royal Navy. Cook made detailed maps of Newfoundland prior to making three voyages to the Pacific Ocean, during which he achieved the first recorded European contact with the eastern coastline of Australia and the Hawaiian Islands, and the first recorded circumnavigation of New Zealand.Cook's 12 years sailing around the Pacific Ocean contributed much to European knowledge of the area. This is a useful reference book.A 446pp hard back book titled, "Captain Cook's Voyages" in gold print. It has a black and red cover with a coloured illustration of the landing of James Cook, his crew and the planting of the British red ensign. It has coloured illustrations. The fire screen was part of the original furnishings of the Lighthouse Keeper's Quarters in Merri Street, Warrnambool. It was made by Lighthouse Keeper, Thomas Hope. Thomas served two terms as an assistant lighthouse keeper in Warrnambool. His first term was from 1905 to 1907. He later returned from 1910 to 1913, when he was appointed as Keeper five months after the untimely death of his predecessor Peter Quinn. Woodworking was one of Thomas Hope’s hobbies, and the three-panel fire screen he made as a lighthouse keeper is now in the Flagstaff collection and is displayed in the Lighthouse Keeper’s Cottage. Thomas Hope 1857 - 1928 Thomas James Hope was born in Camden, Surrey, England in 1857. His father, also called Thomas, was reputed to be a member of the Royal Family, and Thomas Hope Junior his illegitimate son. Thomas was subsequently brought up on the estate of the Earl of Hopetoun in Somerset and it was thought that Thomas was the Earl’s grandson. Against the wishes of those in charge of Thomas, he joined the navy at an early age, seeing much of the world until he settled in New Zealand at the age of twenty-four. After some years in New Zealand, he came to Australia to live. One of the jobs Thomas Hope had prior to becoming an assistant lighthouse keeper in 1896 was as a cook in the Lunatic Asylum at Sunbury, Victoria. He served as an assistant keeper at Shortlands Bluff, Gabo Island, Split Point and Warrnambool, retiring in 1918. He bought a house in Nicholson St, Warrnambool and died in March 1928. He is buried in the Warrnambool cemetery. Thomas Hope is recorded in family history as being of short stature and, not surprisingly given his alleged aristocratic connections, possessed a beautiful speaking voice. He and his wife Elizabeth nee Waters, whom he married in New Zealand, had six children (Thomas, killed in World War One), Ellen (Nell), Nora (who was married at the Warrnambool lighthouse keepers cottage), William (who died in Warrnambool), Marion and Alan. Joseph Hoover (Dec 29, 1830, to Aug 7, 1913) Joseph Hoover, the printer of the pictures on the screen, was born in Baltimore, of Swiss-German heritage. He was trained as an architectural woodturner. In 1856 Hoover moved to Philadelphia and began producing elaborate wooden frames in his wood-turning and framing business. By 1865 Hoover had started to produce popular prints for publishers and artists, which included noted Philadelphia artist James F. Queen. In the 1880s Hoover set up a complete plant specialising in chromatography, the process of producing colour prints from lithographic plates. The coloured prints he produced were affordable to business and private customers. In 1893 his son Henry L., a trained lithographer, joined the company as overseer and it was called J. Hoover & Son. It became one of the largest in America by the turn of the century. Hoover won a medal for Excellence for his Chromolithographs of James Queen’s works. In 1904 Joseph’s other son, Joseph W, joined the business as a partner and the company was called Jos. Hoover & Sons. Hoover died of a heart attack in 1913. He was survived by his wife and six children: two sons who were also his business partners, and four daughters. The firm continued in production until around 1985. Hoover’s prints included scenes, still life and landscapes of America and other locations. They were sold in America and overseas to countries including Canada, Germany, Mexico and England. The three-panelled screen in the Lighthouse Keeper’s Cottage was made by the Assistant Lighthouse Keeper, Thomas Hope during one of his two terms at the Lighthouse Keepers' Quarters. It is the only object in the collection known to be connected to Hope. The Lighthouse Keeper's Cottage is part of the Lady Bay Lighthouse Complex, which is listed on the Victorian Heritage Register for being of historical, scientific (technological) and architectural significance to the State of Victoria.Fire screen comprising three black wood framed panels hinged together. Each panel contains a glass-encased print depicting a rural landscape. Ornate stencil cut wood edging and quilt-inspired parquetry sits above each panel. This map is a reprint of Johann (Johannes) Walch’s “Australien (Sudland) auch Polynesien oder Inselwelt, insgemein der funfte Welltheil”, published in 1802. It shows Australia, New Zealand, South East Asia and the Pacific Islands shows a large number of places names, many of which have changed since the map was drawn. The map includes the routes and dates of the voyages of Tasman, Cook, Bougainville, Carteret, Byron, and others up to 1802. The shapes of the lands on this early map show that some of the areas had not yet been charted. The map was donated to Flagstaff Hill Maritime Village in April 1990 by the Group Study Exchange Team from Rotary District 233, Sweden. It was framed and presented by Rotary District 978 and presented by Barry Lange, the Governor of District 978 in 1989-90. (District 978, Geelong East, is now District 9780.) Johann (Johannes) Walch Johann Walch, painter and engraver, was born in 1757. He was well known for creating miniature portraits. He gained his training in Geneva, Venice and Rome. His publications include atlases and sheet maps, many of which were reprinted after his death in 1816. This reprint of an 1802 is significant for its historical and geographical contant, showing the voyages of many early explorers to the southern regions of the world including Australia. It also shows the early names used for countries and towns and is a valuable reference to historical interpretation. This typed pro-forma document is a call-up notice instructing the receiver to appear at the Combined Services Recruiting Centre, 301 Flinders Lane, Melbourne at 7:30 pm on 25 February 1971 to appear before a medical board. Statue presented by Andrew Stenhouse, 3 December 1914. Donated by Mr Andrew Stenhouse, a retired contractor who lived at Beaconsfield Parade, St Kilda, he was interested in the reclamation of the foreshore in front of his dwelling Captain James Cook FRS (1728-1779) was a British explorer, navigator, cartographer, and captain in the Royal Navy. During three voyages to the Pacific Ocean he achieved the first recorded European contact with the eastern coastline of Australia and the Hawaiian Islands, and the first recorded circumnavigation of New Zealand. He was killed in the Hawaiian Islands in 1779. The statue appears to have been the first monument erected to him in Victoria and is a replica of one in Whitby, England. It was unveiled on Monday December 7th, 1914 by the Governor of Victoria, Sir Arthur Stanley in front of Commonwealth and State dignitaries and hundreds of St Kilda residents.
