Medal, commemorative, "City of Caulfield, Coronation of H. M. Queen Elizabeth II, 2nd June, 1953", c. 1953
Small round gilt bronze commemorative medal with loop. Red, white and blue striped ribbon attached to the loop with a small gold coloured safety pin. Profile of HM Queen Elizabeth II on obverse surrounded by the inscription "CORONATION OF QUEEN ELIZABETH II JUNE 2ND 1953" and "AMOR" near the left shoulder. The City of Caulfield Coat of Arms (unofficial version) is depicted in the centre surrounded by the inscription "CITY OF CAULFIELD VICTORIA" around central coat of arms. Some abrasion and rust evident on both sides.Obverse - "CORONATION OF QUEEN ELIZABETH II 2ND JUNE 1953" around Head of Elizabeth II and "AMOR" near Queen's shoulder- Reverse - "CITY OF CAULFIELD VICTORIA" around central coat of arms. -

Booklet, A Legatee at the Coronation. A letter written from London by Legatee S. G. Savige, 1953
Legatee Stan Savige attended the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth on 2nd June 1953 as a representative of Legacy at the request of the Co-ordinating Council and the Australian Prime Minister, Robert Menzies. This booklet is his account of the events as he wrote in a letter back the President of Legacy. In shows the interest in the Coronation, and L/- Savige's account was of interest to so many that it was published in a booklet for the Legatees. Two additional copies of the booklet - see full images at 01164.The Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II was an important event and Sir Stan Savige felt it worth sending a letter that was published for Legatees about it. This photograph was taken about 1900. Herbert Schlink, on the right of the image was born in was born on 28 March 1883 at Wodonga, Victoria to German migrants Albert Joseph Schlink and Franzsiska Trudewind. He initially enrolled in Faculty of Arts at the University of Sydney, but after one year he transferred to medicine and graduated in 1907. This marked the beginning of a brilliant career. He was appointed as honorary gynaecological surgeon at Royal Prince Alfred, Sydney NSW from 1922. As a director of the hospital board from 1926, Schlink as chairman (1934-62) supervised the opening of Gloucester House, King George V Memorial Hospital for Mothers and Babies, Queen Mary Nurses' Home, the neurosurgical and psychiatric blocks, the (Sir Earle) Page Chest Pavilion and the hospital chapel. As a gynaecologist, Herbert pioneered the use of cobalt ray therapy in treating pelvic cancer and instigated the systematic follow-up of cancer patients. In 1954, Herbert was created Knight Bachelor for his public services and his service to medicine. He had previously received the Silver Jubilee Medal from his Majesty King George V, and the Coronation Medals of 1937 and 1953. Outside of his medical career, Dr Schlink was an enthusiastic skier. In 1926 he made the first winter crossing from Kiandra to Kosciusko. He was a foundation member of the Kosciusko Alpine Club and was directly responsible for the building of the first chalet at Charlotte Pass. Schlink Pass near Guthega in the Snowy Mountains is also named in his honour. Charlie Ryan is the boy on the left. A programme for a showing of film footage of Queen Elizabeth's coronation a couple of weeks after the coronation. In the 1950s few households had televisions so although the Coronation was broadcast, many people may not have had the opportunity to watch it live. A screening at South Melbourne Town Hall on 23rd June 1953 was for Junior Legatees. Approximately 1,200 children attended with their mothers (from 'History of Legacy 1953' at 01491). The Governor Sir Dallas Brookes was unable to attend due to illness and his wife, Lady Brookes spoke and read a message from him.Junior Legatees pledged allegiance to the Queen at rallies and classes, so they would have been excited to see the Coronation screened.White paper programme with a colour photo of the Queen and black type, folded in half.coronation, gala performance -

The newsletter from April 1953. The cover featured the new Governor General Field Marshal Sir William Slim GCB, GBE, DSO, MC. The president's address recapped his career. There was an article on Harelands, the new residence in Willesmere Road Kew. New matron was Miss Secker. Also an article about the Queen's coronation and the traditions in the ceremony. A photo of President S S Neville. It covered events for the junior legatees such as basketball and boys classes in different locations such as Footscray and Auburn boys' classes. Also mentioned Longbank a holiday home in Camperdown available at reasonable rates to Legacy Widows. A newsletter published by Legacy in this format for many years from 1942. It mentions "Issued from time to time for Private Circulation among the Sons and Daughters of Deceased Service men and Merchant Seamen who served their Country during the War of 1914-18, or the present War" Many articles on the work of Legacy, including features on boys classes, girls classes, camps, the residences and where their past residents ended up. There are some suggestion for careers and some general interest articles.
