Functional object - Destination Roll, Melbourne and Metropolitan Tramways Board (MMTB), "Malvern Depot", 1950's
Destination roll that was used in Malvern Depot trams, Melbourne, until the late 1960's. Roll on linen, with white letters on black background. Has stencilled words "STOP" on top and bottom of rolls, stencilled miniature destination on rear to assist driver to locate the destination. Letters approx. 140 high. Roll consists of an unpainted section 535 long at top and 360 long unpainted section at base. Painted section approx. 7.2m long. Roll has oil and dirt stains in the middle portion, but the last three destinations are very worn with the black paint in a deteriorated condition. Destination roll - white lettering on black background. Destination roll used at the TB Footscray depot. Has stencil words "STOP" on top and bottom, stencilled miniature destinations on rear to assist drivers to locate the destination. Letters are 146 high. Roll consists of a unpainted section, 520 long at top, 2280 long painted section and a 1500 long unpainted section at base. Has been rolled using a 16 diameter wooden dowel - 925 long. Destinations in order from top are: DEPOT; WILLIAMSTOWN RD; RAILWAY STATION; RUSSELL ST; BALLARAT RD; SPECIAL; FOOTBALL GROUND; EXPLOSIVES FACTORY; ORDANCE FTY; AUNITION FACTORY; PYROTECHNIC FACTORY; CITY VIA HAYMARKET. Functional object - Destination Roll, Victorian Railways, "St Kilda - Brighton", 1950?
Destination roll - white lettering on black background for the St Kilda - Brighton tramway, operated by the Victorian Railways until November 1956. Letters are 125 high, with painted black linen (glossy black), leaving the letters white, but with edge to give a shadow effect - see images. Roll quite stiff when rolled out. Roll 790 wide, with a top section (no destinations) 225 long, the destination roll section, 995 long and a bottom 240 long. Destinations in order are: ST KILDA RLY; DICKENS ST; VAUTIER ST; ELWOOD DEPOT; MID BRIGHTON; BRIGHTON BCH. Rolled in direction with destinations on the outside of the roll. Destination roll that was used in Camberwell Depot trams, Melbourne, until the late 1960's. Roll on linen, with white letters on black background. Has stencilled words "STOP CAMB" on bottom of roll, generally stencilled, though a few handwritten, miniature destination on rear to assist driver to locate the destination. Letters approx. 140 high. Roll consists of an unpainted section 525 long at top and 165 long unpainted section at base. Painted section approx. 9.9m long. Has on the bottom of the roll, a section which has been added to the roll or repaired by adding a new section. Some repainting of the old destinations also apparent. The middle of three "CITY" destinations and other parts adjacent have been repaired. Yields information and demonstrates aspects about Ballarat's destination rolls used in trams up to 1967 when the rolls were replaced with the opposite colour arrangementDestination roll white lettering on black background used in Ballarat until late 1967, replaced by black letters on white background. Layout of individual destinations follows that shown in K.S.Kings, "Ballarat Tramways" - see image file for copy. Main letters are 150 high. Has a short section of white on the top of the roll and larger section at bottom. On rear of roll, has abbreviated destinations painted in white paint on black gloss paint to enable drivers to locate easier the individual destinations. Width - used on bogie trams? Functional object - ESCO Tram Destination Symbol, Circa 1913
Tramcar Destination Sign used by the Electric Supply Company of Victoria on the Ballarat Electric Trams. The ESCo operated the Ballarat electric trams from 1905 to 1934. Tramcar destination symbols originated in a time when a large part of the population was illiterate. The symbols were displayed on the front of the tram enabling the public to easily identify a tram's destination. The destination signs had a painted circle in the middle, the colour indicated the tram's destination. This particular sign has a yellow circle indicating the destination was Lydiard Street North. See Reg No. 5488.Yields information about how the public related to the trams and their destinations.Square sheet of steel, painted dark green and with a painted yellow circle 125mm in diameter in the middle. Has two circular holes near one side with an extended slot for fastening over hooks or screw heads. Has at least two layers paint with slightly different shades; all layers of paint are flaking.
