Placenta praevia forceps used by Box Hill Hospital labour ward, Ramsay
Similar to Willett's placenta praevia forceps [see Down Bros Catalogue of Surgical Instruments and Appliances, c1930, p 940]. John Abernethy Willett (1872 -1932) modified an existing pair of surgical scalp forceps for use in bringing down the head of a foetus in the case of placenta praevia. As the safety of c-sections increased and fetal viability became a dominant consideration, these were used only for the dead/pre-viable foetus. (Source: Baskett, Thomas. 'On the Shoulders of Giants - Eponyms & Names in O&G'.) This was included with other obstetric instruments, mostly destructive instruments, from Box Hill Hospital labour ward given to RANZCOG in February- March 1998. The maternity service at Box Hill hospital combined with St Geroge's Hospital in Kew to be known as Birralee Maternity Service. These instruments were collected by Julie Collette, Unit Manager, St George's Kew and given to RANZCOG Museum Curator, Susan Barnett.Pair of long handled forceps, placenta praevia style. Document - HUSTLERS REEF MINE - JOHN M'CAVISTON'S WONDERFUL ESCAPE
Ten page typed copy titled The Flooded Mine - John M'Caviston's Wonderful Escape by G. Mackay. The shift boss, John M'Caviston went to let water in the old workings of Latham and Watson's mine run more freely. He used the pick and removed a boulder. No sooner had he done this, the water burst in on him with a tremendous roar, blew his candle out and pushed him away. He escaped and warned the men as he ran. He then remembered four men at the bottom level and he went down to warn them. He descended the ladder and found them gone. He tried to get back up the ladder but could not. He went to a place where the floor had been built up. On the surface they thought he had been lost, but they started pumping and also baling. When the water level had dropped, men went down and on reaching the level one of them, Richard Williams, thought he heard a noise, and called out 'Jack'. They had found him alive.document, gold, hustlers reef mine, hustlers reef mine, john m'caviston's wonderful escape, the flooded mine, g mackay, hustlers reef company, latham & watson's mine, mr r jackson, hustlers reef mine, john m'caviston, j hooper, t o'connor, j derby, stanlake, cahill, richard williams, walter chapman -

This album pays tribute to the First World War service men who were born and / or lived in the Shire of Marong. This volume covers surnames from A to G. Australia’s involvement in the First World War began when Britain and Germany went to war on 4 August 1914, and both Prime Minister Joseph Cook and Opposition Leader Andrew Fisher, who were in the midst of an election campaign, pledged full support for Britain. The outbreak of war was greeted in Australia, as in many other places, with great enthusiasm. For Australia, the First World War remains the costliest conflict in terms of deaths and casualties.
