This souvenir plate was sold to tourists in Warrnambool in the 20th century. It features an image of a popular tourist spot off the coast of Warrnambool – Thunder Point. Tourism has always been an important industry in Warrnambool and souvenir items such as this one continue to be sold, although colour images would most likely be used now. This plate is of interest as an example of items sold to local tourists in the 20th century. It will be useful for display. This is a circular glass plate with a ripple pattern on the rim and an outer edge with the glass heavily-impressed and patterned. These glasses appear to be mainly sunglasses or ones for outdoors as the tinted glass and the shades indicate this. They would have been used commonly in the past (100 years ago or more) by those able to afford the cost of the item. Eye glasses were first used in the 13th century and bi-focals were invented in the late 18th century.These items have no known local significance and are kept as interesting souvenirs of eye glasses used in the past.This is a pair of spectacles or glasses in a case. The glasses are made of thin metal and contain dark tinted glass. The eye-glass pieces are oval in shape. On the outer rims of the eye-glass pieces are two curved metal mesh covers attached to the metal rims by two screws on each side. These act as shades for the sun and side protection for the eyes and fold down when not in use. One of the shades is detached from its metal rim. This small glass has been kept as a souvenir of the Warrnambool Criterion Hotel by a local resident, James Godfrey. The Criterion Hotel opened in Kepler Street, Warrnambool in April 1872. The first licensee was John Tate and the Humm family members of Woodford and the McGennan family of Warrnambool were prominent licensees and owners in the late 19th and 20th centuries. In the second half of the 20th century the hotel was an important centre in Warrnambool for live pop music. The hotel closed in 2008. The building was partially destroyed by fire in 2010 and the remaining structure was demolished in 2013. This glass is significant because it has local provenance as a memento of a hotel in Warrnambool prominent in the local business world for 136 years and as an example of the souvenirs kept of this hotel by Warrnambool residents.This is a small clear glass tumbler with a heavy base and a slightly tapered neck and a circular open top. This glass has been purchased by a visitor to Warrnambool as a utilitarian souvenir of the visit. Tourism has been an important business in Warrnambool for over100 years. In the late 19th century Warrnambool was promoted as a spa resort with its mild climate, coastal swimming and hot and cold seawater baths. Today the visitors come in winter to see the Southern Right whales at Logans Beach and other coastal areas and in summer they come for a beach holiday. This glass is retained as an example of the mid 20th century tourist souvenirs obtainable in Warrnambool. This is a small glass tumbler, oval-shaped. The rim and the base are encircled by thick gold bands with smaller gold bands underneath the rim and above the bottom gold band.
