The main photo is by Max Lowenhardt and shows John Green, Mrs Eva Penny (inside the tree and hardly visible) nursing Charlie, May, George and Nicolas Penny. Colin Silcock wrote of the tree on p.39 that the family lived int he hollowed-out butt for nine months in 1906-1907. It was 20 feet across at floor level with 12 feet of head room inside. Nicholas Penny ring-barked the tree in 1905, with it being 130 feet high with the top broken off. The fires the following year destroyed the tent in which he was living and hollowed out the tree. After "making a few alterations" Penny moved in and brought his wife and children across from Outtrim. They later built a more permanent home. The tree was destroyed in the 1926 bushfires. This is the 2nd edition. In the Gippsland Times newspaper on June 1 1936 there is a report of a meeting of the Greater Gippsland League at which the production of this book was mentioned as"a method of marking the Gippsland Centenary. TOURIST BOOK-LET. The work of -Messrs A. Gilchrist and A. B. Cooper in connection with the preparation of a tourist booklet was warmly commended and a minute of appreciation placed on record." This group seems to have been a group of Gippsland citizens interested in the progress of Gippsland and any government action in the area. This meeting was held at Maffra. This tourist guide is a contemporary record of tourism promotion in Gippsland.A thin 48 pp booklet with a grey cover. The title, "GIPPSLAND FOR TOURISTS" is inside two blue, black bordered, bands. This magazine cost $2.50 and was produced to support the East Gippsland Red Cross Flood Appeal. Following heavy rain in East Gippsland in June, 1998, major flooding occurred in the Mitchell, Nicholson, Tambo, Snowy, Brodribb and Bemm Rivers. Other streams in the region also experienced high flows during this time. Probably the most severe direct impacts of the floods were to the rural sector.This magazine is a contemporary record of a significant local event.Two copies of a magazine pictorial of the floods of 1998. This book developed from a project undertaken by the Orbost Women's Awareness Group. It began as an activity in learning how to conduct "Oral Histories". With a substantial amount of information resulting the group decided to publish the information in the form of this book. Orbost Women's Awareness Group was originally the "Orbost Women's Pulp Mill Association" created in 1989 to disseminate information about a proposed pulp mill planned for the area. When the proposal became non viable the group continued to meet as an awareness group. It continues today as the Orbost Women's Awareness Group.This book is a research tool for those interested in the timber industry of East Gippsland.A spiral bound 44pp book with a photo of the forests of East Gippsland on the cover.
