This informally posed photo was taken in front of the old grandstand at Mortlake's recreation (football) oval. It shows 17 troopers in uniform, holding rifles. There are 7 horses, one trooper is mounted. All wear an early version of the slouch hat. An interested group of mainly boys and a few men, including a policeman, watch from the grandstand. Shows early preparation for national defence or conflict, at a local level. Britain had withdrawn its defence forces from the colonies in 1870, so the States had to provide their own. District defence groups were common at this time, meeting regularly for training. This un-named and un-dated photo appears to be a local (Mortlake) unit of the Victorian Mounted Rifles c. 1885,[A local expert on weaponry believes they are from the 'Victorian Rangers' judging from their rifles.] They were precursors of the Light Horse regiments of the Boer and First World Wars. Mortlake has its own Boer War Memorial (1902) in Mortlake Botanic Gardens. W.D. Vaughan in 'Kew's Civic Century' (1960) has a chapter (XXII, pp.103-105) on the Kew Swimming Pool (aka Kew Baths). In the chapter he recounts debate in Council from 1912 about the need for a swimming pool. The first concrete step toward achieving this occurred in 1914 when Council purchased the Tramways Sheds on the corner of High and Disraeli Streets in 1914. Further adjoining land in High Street was compulsorily acquired in 1923. The final plans were accepted in 1925 and following public tender, Messrs. Weavill and Keast were appointed to construct the pool at a cost of 5,418/9/-. The baths were formally opened on 18 November 1925 by George Ramsay, Mayor of Kew. (The Kew Swimming Club was founded in the same year.) Vaughan notes that "mixed bathing was not permitted at the Kew Baths until January, 1928, when it was allowed every evening (except Sundays) and Friday afternoons. The postcard depicts a large grandstand with spectators attending a race meeting in Baarmutha Park, Beechworth. The crowd is made up of many young men, women and children. There is one horse with a jockey captured in movement. The postcard is historically significant as it illustrates how Barrmutha Park was used at this time. The record's historical significance is enhanced by its strong relationship to the popular, continuing tradition of horse racing within Victoria (vis-a-vis Melbourne Cup, W.S. Cox Plate, Caulfield Cup). "BALLARAT, Fri: Two days before Christmas Mr F. C. Clarke, of Victoria st, received from his son, Sapper F. Clarke, a message conveying Christmas and New Year greetings, and the assurance "all well." Mr Clarke has now been officially advised that his son died of wounds in New Guinea on December 24." [The Argus, 1 January 1944] The seat was moved to White Flat from the corner of Ballarat's Barkly and Young Streets around 2008.A digital colour photograph of a timber seat at the White Flat Oval.
