Sydney Joy (joy) Stewart (1925-2018) was a founding member of the Kew Historical Society, and during the 1970s its secretary. During her residence in Kew, she completed numerous property illustrations on commission. These ranged from preliminary sketches, including architectural details to finished pen & ink and wash illustrations on paper. On moving to Queensland, Joy Stewart donated the remaining property illustrations in her possession to the Kew Historical Society. This work forms part of the collection assembled by the historian Dorothy Rogers, that was donated to the Kew Historical Society by her son John Rogers in 2015. The manuscripts, photographs, maps, and documents were sourced by her from both family and local collections or produced as references for her print publications. Many were directly used by Rogers in writing ‘Lovely Old Homes of Kew’ (1961) and 'A History of Kew' (1973), or the numerous articles on local history that she produced for suburban newspapers. Most of the photographs in the collection include detailed annotations in her hand. The Rogers Collection provides a comprehensive insight into the working habits of a historian in the 1960s and 1970s. A slide image of three ladies in a waiting room, believed to be in the old Legacy House in Market Street, probably from the 1950s. The portrait of Stan Savige was painted by E. Buckmaster for the Archibald prize in 1946. Legacy rented the Market St premises for many years. It was part of the Western Market complex that was demolished and redeveloped in the early 1960s. Legacy held meetings, activities and the girls classes on the second floor of the building, accessed by this staircase, but it was barely fit for purpose. In the 1940s a generous donation by an anonymous donor meant Legacy could purchase a building at 342 Swanston St, but due to several factors were never able to inhabit it. Photos of a garden party or event at Government House hosted by the Governor of Victoria. It was stored with photos from the 50th Anniversary year events or perhaps it is when Sir Rohan Delacombe was leaving the post of Governor of Victoria (1974). There were a significant number of events attended by Sir Delacombe during the Jubilee Year as he is patron of Legacy. Another copy of the photo 00464.7 had notes on the back saying three Legatees talking to the Governor -they were George Cowan, Geoff Handbury and Bill Michan (?). Photos show him making a speech, also a piper playing from the tower, also Lady Delacombe with the President's wife, Helen Handbury. Photographs of the opening night of the exhibition on asylums by the Yarra, organised as part of the Kew Festival 2017. A photo that was kept in an album of past presidents and prominent Legatees. The photo shows Legatee Ron Austin with Legatee Sam Benson at a function in Legacy House. Legatee Benson appears to be counting money, perhaps donations or door entry. Ron Austin has the distinction of being the youngest surviving Melbourne Legatee to have served in WW1, he also served in WW2 and received an OBE for his tireless devotion to duty. The article was part of an album of past presidents from 1965 to 1989. The folder included biographical details and obituaries, eulogies and death notices of prominent Legatees.
