This collection of nine photos was most likely taken in Lithographic Squadron, Army Survey Regiment, Fortuna, Bendigo, c1970s to 1980s. The two Ultra-MAN-III Printing Presses were made in Germany at a standard map size format and introduced in June 1962 as a two-colour offset press with improved safety features. With an upgrade to a third colour deck in 1968, productivity greatly improved as the two presses could print a five-colour standard topographic map in two passes, rather than the three passes before their upgrade. They were replaced with a single Heidelberg Speedmaster 102 five colour Printing Press in 1990. This is a set of 25 photograph of Print Troop Equipment in Lithographic Squadron, Army Survey Regiment at Fortuna, Bendigo, 1990. Photo .1P features the new Howson Algraphy Autoneg printing plate processor. It improved quality control and efficiency and allowed the conversion of printing plates for positive or negative use. The Heidelberg Speedmaster 102 shown in photos .2P to .4P was a computer-controlled five colour lithographic offset printing press. It provided the Royal Australian Survey Corps a vastly improved printing capability, as the five colours for a standard topographic map was printed in a single pass. The print room housing the Speedmaster printing press was named Wayzgoose Hall after a medieval printing house festival. Wayzgoose Hall and the Speedmaster printing capability was commissioned by the Commander of the 3rd Military District BRIG P. Davies AM, ADC on Wednesday 27th June 1990. The first photograph was probably taken at a media event announcing the introduction of the Heidelberg Speedmaster printing press in late 1990. LTCOL Rene van den Tol was the CO of the Army Survey Regiment from 1989 to 1991. Partly obscured behind the CO was Mr Bruce Reid, who was the newly elected federal member for Bendigo. The media event was held in Wayzgoose Hall, Lithographic Squadron’s new purpose-built building constructed to house the Speedmaster 102 printing press. The remaining 29 photographs were taken at an Army Survey Regiment Open Day at Fortuna Villa, Bendigo on the 24th of February 1990. This occasion was one of several events held to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the formation of the Royal Australian Survey Corps. Although historical tours of Fortuna occurred on a regular basis, this was the first technical open day since 1972. The Royal Australian Survey Corps recognised that an Open Day was the best way for the local community in Bendigo to gain an insight into the unit’s important role as Defence’s map production agency, its technical equipment, and its economic importance to Bendigo. It also gave them an opportunity to tour through historic Fortuna Villa. This occasion is covered in more detail in page 143 of Valerie Lovejoy’s book 'Mapmakers of Fortuna – A history of the Army Survey Regiment’ ISBN: 0-646-42120-4. This is a set of ten photographs of Lithographic Squadron’s Printing Building at the Army Survey Regiment, Fortuna, Bendigo, c1986. The building was originally George Lansell’s gold crushing battery. When the Army took possession of Fortuna in 1942, it was modified with reinforced concrete floors to house the heavy-duty printing equipment. The first four photographs were most likely taken in the 1960 and the fifth in the 1970s at the Army Survey Regiment, Fortuna, Bendigo. As there are no annotations with the photos, the exact dates, locations and names of personnel are unknown. SGT Bob Scaddan appears in the fifth photo taken in the 1970s Photos .1P and .2P. could have been taken in Lithographic Squadron’s retouching room and Photos .3P, .4P and .5P. were probably taken in Cartographic Squadron’s Correcting Section, located in the Attic. Retouching mainly entailed the application of liquid opaque (Plumtree), commonly known as “duff” to cover blemishes such as scratches and spots on film negatives before photographic exposure. Retouching technicians also used specialised techniques such as “needling” to repair faults on the emulsion of map reproduction material. The technician in photo .4P is needling a hydrographic feature on a drainage negative, with a zoom transfer scope projecting a scaled projected aerial photograph as a positional reference. These nine photographs of the Planeta Polygraph Printing Press were probably taken circa 1970s to 1980s in Lithographic Squadron at the Army Survey Regiment, Fortuna, Bendigo. The photos are not annotated except for .4P. The Planeta Polygraph Offset Printing Press was a two-colour offset press used to print Naval and medium format RAAF charts. The Planata Printing Press was one of the replacements for the George Mann Printing Presses. It was more reliable than the Komori Printing Press however procurement was difficult when spare parts were required. The Planeta Printing Press was built in East Germany and was in service at the Army Svy Regt from 1976 to 1994. The two Ultra-MAN-III Printing Presses were made in Germany at a standard map size format and introduced in June 1962 as a two-colour offset press with improved safety features. With an upgrade to a third colour deck in 1968, productivity greatly improved as the two presses could print a five colour standard topographic map in two passes, rather than the three passes before their upgrade. This is a set of 30 photographs of contractors installing the Army Survey Regiment’s new Heidelberg Speedmaster 102 printing press in Lithographic Squadron’s purpose-built printing building at Fortuna, Bendigo in 1990. The computer-controlled five colour lithographic offset printing press provided the Royal Australian Survey Corps vastly improved printing capability, as the five colours for a standard topographic map was printed in a single pass. The print room was named Wayzgoose Hall after a medieval printing house festival. Wayzgoose Hall and the Speedmaster printing capability was commissioned by the Commander of the 3rd Military District BRIG P. Davies AM, ADC on Wednesday 27th June 1990. This is a set of 21 photographs of Lithographic Squadron equipment and personnel as well equipment operated by Cartographic Squadron, Army Survey Regiment, Fortuna, Bendigo circa 1975. The photos were mainly taken in the Printing, Camera, proofing and external buildings. Cartographic Squadron’s CPL Arty Lane operated the Fotosetter type setting machine, as shown in photo .21P for many years in a room on the top floor of Fortuna Villa. Quality control was applied progressively in the printing process, with registration checks and adjustments between colours on the first pass. In these photos a quality check was performed off the press before the printing press was prepared with the new set of printing plates and colours for the next pass. These nine photographs of Printer Technicians working on the despatch of bulk printed map stock to customers, were probably taken circa 1970s to 1990s in Lithographic Squadron at the Army Survey Regiment, Fortuna, Bendigo. Except for photo .3P, personnel are not annotated on the photos. Despatch was the final task performed by a team of Printer Technicians. It involved the wrapping of trimmed bulk maps into manageable parcels and sending them by freight to customers or to the Army Map Depot at Bandiana, VIC. The task’s Due date and sensitivity were essential considerations in the planning of production affecting the lead time and method of delivery. Freighting by commercial means was the normal method for routine tasks. The method of despatch for urgent time-critical tasks sometimes meant having to use military freight or safe-handed by Army Survey Regiment personnel. The mishap captured in photos .6P and .7P was rare, but costly if it was a time critical task. The Optronix 5040 Laser Scanner/Plotter was shown in Photos .4P to .6P. The Print Room’s Map Handling Station in photo .7P provided ergonomic benefits to the Printer Technician and improved despatching productivity. The Optical Disk Archive and Retrieval System (ODARS) equipment in .8P was optical "platter" disk technology for the secure and long term archive storage of large amounts of digital map data. Map data was transferred from large reels of magnetic tape. As most map type (letters and names) generation was done in Automap 2, The ITEK Typesetter shown in photo .9P was close to obsolete in 1991. In photos .1P and .2P the technician is preparing a Chromalin map proof for supporting information that would be printed on the reverse side of a topographic map. This map was commonly referred to as a ‘snack’ map, with photos of edible indigenous plants and descriptions endemic to that region printed on the reverse side to assist soldiers living off the land in survival situations. The authoritative information was provided by Major Leslie James (Les) Hiddins aka ‘the Bush Tucker Man’ He is a retired Australian Army soldier and war veteran, who is best known for his love and knowledge of the Australian bush. This book was hand made in Bendigo and presented to the Army Survey Regiment Sergeants Mess by WO2 Graham Squire (Later WO1 RSM RASvy). The book is to record events when the Sgts Mess Bell was rung, signaling that money was put over the bar for those present. Events such as promotions, departures, birthdays, birth of children and grandchildren were celebrated in this way and hence recorded in this book. This is a set of six staff photographs of the Army Survey Regiment’s Officers, Warrant Officers and Sergeants, and each of its four Squadrons at Fortuna, Bendigo in December 1982. Note - Air Survey Squadron’s photo was probably taken in July 1982 as they appear in winter dress. Air Survey Squadron was responsible for aerotriangulation, photogrammetric feature extraction and the AUTOMAP 1 system. Typical tasks were flight planning the acquisition of aerial photography, pugging, mensuration and block adjustments, photogrammetric extraction of topographic features from aerial photography, digital feature editing, map compilation, operating the scanner/plotter, operating the AUTOMAP 1 system and computer programming by civilians. Cartographic Squadron was responsible for the production of the following military products: Joint Operation Graphics, small-scale RAAF Air Charts, large-scale topographic line maps and orthophotomaps. Cartographic technician tasks were scribing, compiling, retouching, masking, type setting, type stickup, terrain embossing, correcting and proving quality control. Headquarters Squadron was responsible for the planning and coordination of map production and contracts. It also performed administrative and support functions such as personnel administration, pay, finance, transportation, records, map Library, kitchens, messes and facility maintenance. It was staffed by Army personnel from RASvy, RACT, AACC, RAAOC and RAEME corps. Other supporting staff at this time included the RAAF Liaison Officer, RAN Liaison Officer and several civilians employed in administration, the Q-Store and grounds maintenance. A component of the Army Svy Regt’s cartographic map production was carried out by the Detachment, a sub-unit located at Bonegilla next to the School of Military Survey. Lithographic Squadron was responsible for the reproduction of map materials and printing of military map products. The main tasks undertaken by photographic technicians were photographic enlargements, reductions and duplication of map reproduction material and processing of aerial photography. Despite lacking annotation on exact dates, locations and personnel, they are positively identified. CPL Ian Nelson in photo .1P is operating a Wild Pug 4 point transfer device in Air Survey Squadron c1980s. Control points were transferred onto the mapping diapositives of aerial photography by drilling their locations into the photographic emulsion. SPR Viv (Hawkins) Doherty in photo .2P, SPR Jeanette Drury-Lane in photo .5P and SGT Sandy Craig are operating a Wild B8 Stereoplotter coupled to a digital workstation in Air Survey Squadron c1994. Topographic features were extracted with the B8 in 3D and feature coded with attributes, using keyboard, menu, keypad and voice inputs to the computer. The features were stored in the AUTOMAP 2 digital database for subsequent cartographic production and printing. CPL Mick Ellis in photo .3P is operating the Optronix 4040 Scanner/Film Writer in Lithographic Squadron c1990s. In scanning mode, compilation sheets were mounted on the drum and scanned. The resultant raster file was vectorized, feature coded with attributes and stored by cartographic technicians in the AUTOMAP 2 database.
