Yields information about the way the SEC marked the achievement of safety records by workers and yields information about the work of the SEC Ballarat tram depot.A flag or banner made for the SEC to enable an award to work sites that had achieved 100,000 man hours without an accident. Base materials for the flag is blue cloth with blue cotton seamed edges, the left hand side has been overlain by about 15mm to provide a part where a dowel or rope could be passed through. Has the 100,000 Man Hours area with a yellow paint overlay and the 100,000 hours in black paint. The Accident Free is in a darker yellow pain and the SEC Logo of the Electricity Supply Department is in the same yellow base with black lines. On the rear is the Evan Evans manufacturing logo with the Olympic rings giving address and that they were the official flag makers for the XVIth (16th) Olympic games (Melbourne 1956) and the VIIth (7th) British Empire and Commonwealth Games (Perth 1962). This indicates the flag was made early to mid 1960's. Junior Legacy Melbourne purchased 293 Swanston Street Melbourne in 1956 from the Commonwealth Government of Australia with money gifted to Legacy in memory of David Dureau. The title deed is in the name of Junior Legacy Melbourne, which was then working from 45 Market Street. This flag could be one that was flown at the Shrine flagpoles as it is labelled 'Legacy' on the top left corner and is about the size required for the Shrine's flagpoles. The maker was Evan Evans of Melbourne and the label said they supplied flags for the XVIth Olympiad - which was Melbourne in 1956; and the VIIIth Commonwealth Games which was 1966. This small pennant flag would have been produced to celebrate the end of World War 2. Elaborate arrangements were made for Ballarat's Victory Day celebrations at Ballarat on Monday, June 10. Morning church services were followed by a patriotic concert by the combined choirs in front of the city hall at 1.30pm as a prelude to an extensive street pageant and march, featuring lavishly staged tableaux of the Allied nations. This light woollen evening dress is made from Peppinella, a new fabric Norma Tullo introduced into her range in 1973. The fabric was used exclusively by Tullo, and came from the wool of Peppin Merino (first introduced into Australia in 1858 by the Peppin brothers). According to the papers of the day Tullo’s 1973 winter collection featured ‘St. Trinian’s styles to garments dripping lace, in bold plain colours to floral prints.” Shirley Lyle designed the floral fabric. Norma Tullo (1935-2019) was one of the leading fashion designers of her time, establishing her label in 1956. After establishing a business the Old Metropole Arcade in Melbourne in 1956, with three sewing machines, Tullo's ready to wear fashions for young women became sought after, and her business flourished. In 1966 the Japanese department store chain Isetan Co Ltd began to mass-produce her garments for their stores across Japan. Tullo closed her label in 1977, and later worked for Fletcher Jones. The Melbourne and Metropolitan Board of Works (now Melbourne Water) was established in 1891. From that time, as part of their work laying water and sewerage connections, they created detailed plans of houses and other buildings in the Melbourne metropolitan area. These earrings were given to Marlene Austin, nee Trenberth by members of the Thai Olympic delegation when she drove them around Melbourne during the 1956 Olympic Games. Marlene, who was living with her parents in Brighton at the time, took leave from her job as a stenographer to work as an official driver at the Olympics. She drove officials and dignitaries from a variety of nations (including Thailand, Italy, Cuba and Sweden) to and from events, collecting a number of souvenirs. Marlene's family have lived in Brighton since 1941, when her parents moved into a house at 15 Moffat Street. The house remained in the family for more than 75 years, before it was sold in 2018.Six-sided bell-shaped silver screw-back earrings for non-pierced ears. The 1956 Melbourne Olympics saw the rowing events held on Lake Wendouree Ballarat. This was only set of events held outside Melbourne Region. The Programme, lists the scoreboard abbreviations, the Games Committee, map of the course, Rowing events Committee and Council, Officials, each event, finalists, names position, previous winners, transport services, though did not include Ballarat trams and on the rear cover a simplified programme of events and a map and list of competition venues. Cover printed by Sands McDougall Pty Ltd Melbourne with text by Alex King & Sons Pty Ltd Ballarat. Two contestants of interest are Murray Riley and Mervyn Wood who came 3rd in the double sculls. Wood became the NSW police commissioner in 1977 and Riley was a corrupt NSW Policemen and after leaving the police force became highly involved in the Nugan Hand Bank which was highly involved in drug trafficing, and crime syndicates. This image is one from a series of portraits taken by Rob Elliott to record the character of the Border District through the faces if its identities. Des Martin lived all his life in Wodonga, except for his years of service during World War Two. He was raised on the family property Aherlo in the Huon Creek Valley. In 1937 he joined the 8th Light Horse Regiment but in May 1940 led his Wodonga Troop into the 2/2nd Australian Pioneer Battalion. This Battalion saw service in Syria, Java, New Guinea and Borneo. After the war, Des returned to Aherlo and his horses. He was granted permission by the Victorian Racing Club to participate as an amateur “gentleman” rider. He became the first president of the Victorian Amateur Riders Association and founded the Murray Valley Hunt Club. Des also played a major role in Australia entering an equestrian team in the Melbourne Olympics in 1956 and served as a steward at that event. Des also wrote several publications including “Australia Astride” in 1959, a history of the Albury Racing Club – a Century of Racing, and an historical novel “Many a Mile”. He collaborated with R. M. Williams to develop “Hoofs and Horns” to become a national publication. From 1969 to 1973, Des Martin also wrote a column for the Border Mail newspaper. He was also a member of the RSL for almost 50 years and held several committee positions during that time. When the War ended in 1946, the Mayoress, Mrs. H.E. Parker, called a meeting and a branch of the Country Women's Association was formed. The subscription was four shillings and two shillings for associate members. Meetings were held in the lower Town Hall, the President and Secretary sat on the stage, the Treasurer at a table on the floor and the hostess at the door to welcome members. Birthdays were held in the Town Hall. There was an active drama group who performed at competitions. After the Olympic Games in Melbourne in 1956, members re-enacted some of the events. A yearly ball was held for several years. Members catered for the Scout Jamboree. They looked after victims of the bush fires - the Town Hall was covered in beds. Mrs. Pratt, Senior, whose husband took up a selection in Ringwood, gave a block of land to the C.W.A., but the late Councillor Mr. Frank Corr, told his wife (a member) that the Council would not permit a hall to be built on this land so the block was sold to the Masonic Lodge for 250 pounds. Cards were enjoyed monthly in the Presbyterian Church Hall in Adelaide Street. Craft group met in the Church of England Hall in Ringwood Street.
