These were wrapped around the lower leg from the top of the ankle boot upwards and tucked into the top to offer some sort of protection from the elements, wire entanglements and to prevent loose clothing from becoming a hazard. Officers had high topped bootd and Mounted personal had leather leggings. These were for the rankl and file infantry and other members of the forces. -

These offered substantial protection to the lower legs of mouted troops such as, Light Horse, Mounted Artillery, and Mounted Field Ambulance. Tey are as readily identifiable with Light Horse as are the Emu Plumes, (Kangaroo feather) worn in the Pugaree. -

Made up of a shoulder strap with nine closeable leather pouches, each able to carry ten rounds of ammunition. Although in their day they were purely functional, they are still worn by flag and Guidon escorts in Royal Australian Armourd Corp Units to this day in recognition of the ties to their forebears. The only difference is they are now coloured black. -

... mornington-peninsula This saddle formerly belonged to MAX ARMSTRONG ...This saddle formerly belonged to MAX ARMSTRONG a WW2 ex-serviceman and a Frankston RSL Sub Branch member. Max and other ex-service officers were members of a volunteer Light Horse Mounted Section who, for many years, rode at the head of the annual Melbourne ANZAC Day commemoration March, leading the marching troops. At the completion of the march the Light Horse Mounted Section would visit the Memorial Horse Trough near the north east corner of the Shrine of Remembrance for a brief service paying tribute to Australian war horses.A WW1 era Australian Light Horse riding saddle. The saddle is a 1915 pattern Officers riding saddle, made of leather and is complete. The saddle is displayed on a wooden frame. -

These used cartridges have been modified with the addition of three brass 'feet' which have been brazed onto the end of the empty case to enable them to be used as a flower vase. -

... mornington-peninsula Title 'Frankston RSL' and the artist's name ...Framed artwork produced by artist Marie Minton, dated 1972. The artwork is an ink drawing with watercolour tonings and depicts the Frankston RSL Sub Branch clubrooms of the time. The artwork is mounted with a gold coloured wooden frame and glass front. Artist, Marie Minton was apparently the daughter of a member of the time, Laurie Minton. This scene is of a Frankston landmark building on the corner of Davey Street and Young Street, Frankston locally known as the 'Plowman Residence'. Prior to being the clubrooms of the Frankston RSL Sub Branch this building was the family home of Dr Sidney Plowman. In Dr Plowman's time the building was known as the 'The Lofts' and was his residence and operated as a private hospital, the building was constructed ca 1900. Dr Plowman died in May 1932. Title 'Frankston RSL' and the artist's name 'Marie Minton '72' appear on the front lower area of the sketch. The rear has the following note inscribed "Sketch of RSL clubrooms Davey St. by Marie Minton daughter of member (Laurie)" -

... mornington-peninsula The cartridges are engraved with typical New ...Pair of trench art candle holders made from Japanese type 96, 25 mm anti aircraft gun ammunition casings. Presumably souvenired by an Australian serviceman during World War ll. These used brass cartridges have been lightly etched or engraved with typical New Guinea designs and the lettering "LAE" and "1943-4". The type 96 was a Japanese built variant of the French Hotchkiss 25mm anti-aircraft gun. The type 96 was designed as a dual-purpose weapon for use against armored vehicles and aircraft, but was primarily used as an anti-aircraft gun in fixed mounts of one to three guns on Imperial Japanese Naval vessels.The cartridges are engraved with typical New Guinea scenes and the word "LAE", one has the date "1943-4". -

This lance is in the form of a straight wooden staff (made from ash timber) fitted with a spear-shaped pointed steel lance head (attached to the staff by rivets) and a steel shoe fitted to the base of the staff. The lance has an overall length of 2765 mm (108 inches). This lance is an example of a British 1846 Pattern mounted cavalry lance and was manufactured at the Enfield Arms Works, England, in 1848.the lance head is stamped 'ENFIELD 1848' and, on the opposite side, the characters 'C, E, 6' (vertically aligned). -

... mornington-peninsula A detailed model of the Royal Australian Navy ...A detailed model of the Royal Australian Navy submarine HMAS AE2 mounted on a flat wooden base. This model is of her rigged for surface running with radio mast raised. Submarines AE1 and AE2 were the first submarines to join the new RAN fleet in 1914. Constructed in England by Vickers Ltd., the AE2 was launched in June 1913, commissioned at Portsmouth on 28 February 1914 and arrived in Sydney on 24 May, 83 days after leaving Portsmouth. A total of sixty days had been spent at sea and some 13,000 miles covered; a record for submarines at that time. Her first voyage was under the command of Lieutenant Commander Stoker, RN. Her crew of 35 comprised officers and ratings from both the RN and RAN. The AE2 was lost in action in the Sea of Marmora, Turkey on the 30th April, 1915, whilst serving in the Dardanelles and Gallipoli campaign. This edition was published by the British and Foreign Bible Society, London in 1885, printed by Oxford University Press. The first page is stamped by the Thames Church Mission, instituted in 1844. This was carried by WW1 serviceman J D H Wilson, service number 608, 12th Btn., AIF. Known as 'Jack' he landed at Gallipoli early on the morning of 25th April, 1915. Wilson, who was wounded in the foot at the landing was embarked on the 28th April to recuperate in England after a foot amputation. The first page has an oval shaped stamped inscription with the following "THAMES CHURCH MISSION", "INSTITUTED 1844" and "30, New Bridge St., E.C." -
