The Vandersluys-Kelly Collection of photographs, costumes and musical performance memorabilia was donated to the Kew Historical Society by Robin Denise Kelly in 2018. The collection is an important record of stage and recorded performances in Australia in the second half of the 20th century. The former Ballarat Supreme Court building was unique in design for the time. The central court room and the flanking wings were all two storey with hipped roofs. This made this building different from other Public Works designs. The building was erected by the Public Works Department in 1868. Early in the 1940s the former Supreme Court was abandoned. The play was produced by EJ Carroll at the Athenaeum Theatre, the Australian premiere. The play enjoyed a long and successful run with Frank Bradley setting a record by performing as leading man for forty weeks. Frank Talbot had leased the Athenaeum Hall for several years before negotiating with the Melbourne Athenaeum board members to renovate the hall into a modern theatre. The work was completed in 1923. The theatre became a well-known venue for plays but later, as movies became popular a biograph box was constructed to house movie projectors. The theatre manager, Frank Talbot, who leased the theatre from the Melbourne Athenaeum, signed an agreement with British Dominion Films in 1932, to show only British movies. Hoyts Theatres took over the lease in 1955 and later the Melbourne Theatre Company performed in the theatre, bringing live performances back to the theatre for several years. Programs of the early performances of plays are a reminder of the original purpose of the theatre. Black and white photograph of the rear of the former Supreme Court. Built in 1868 as part of the Ballarat Gaol complex, it became part of the Ballarat School of Mines in 1947 and used for Electrical Engineering. It has now been transformed into a performing arts centre. New building shown is Amenities Building and was officially opened in 1981. Radiating beams used for the top window are made from Oregon wood. Thought to be the last building using this wood for this purpose. Drive up to the building comes off Grant Street. This is a set of documents including three sheets of blueprint plans for the New Town Hall and Offices for Warrnambool, created in 1890 by the Architect Mr Arthur H. Cutler of Melbourne. The Contract was signed by the Town Mayor for Warrnambool, Mr William Simpson on May 7th 1890. Also, a Council copy of the Contract dated 26 June 1890, with the signatures and diagram where the two official stamps would be placed. The Foundation Stone was laid the following year by the next Mayor, John Hyland on February 24th 1891. The contractor for the building was granted to W. Kellas (William) of Warrnambool. The Town Hall and Offices were built on the corner of Liebig and Timor Streets in Warrnambool. On March 20th 1983 the new Performing Arts Centre was opened y the Mayor, Councillor R w Andreson, on the same site. The new building incorporates the 1890 Town Hall building. The plans, contracts, documents and various references to people on the documents are significant to the history of the City of Warrnambool and its community. The Warrnambool Town Hall building is also significant for the many community events held there over the decades after it was built. Appreciation for the significance of the almost century-old Town Hall building is demonstrated by its inclusion in the new Performing Arts Centre.Set of five documents that includes Plans for the Warrnambool Town Hall, the Contract cover page and a letter from the Architect to the Council. This is the program for a University of Ballarat Performing Arts presentation of Twelfth Night by William Shakespeare, in 2006, performed by third year Graduate Bachelor of Arts (Acting) students. Director: Kim Durban; Design: John Bennett, Loris Button, Dan Cooling; Lighting Design: Michele Preshaw. The venue was Post Office Box Theatre, Camp Street Ballarat. Dates: June 14 16 at 8pm; June 17 at 2pm and 8pm and June 18th at 5pm. Kim Durban initially trained as a teacher in South Australia, then as a director at the Victorian College of the Arts in Melbourne.In 1990 Kim was awarded the Ewa Czajor Memorial Award for study in Europe. She was the recipient of an Australia Council Training Artistic Directors grant , working Artisiic Associate at Playbox 1994-95. During her Masters studies she received the Yvonne Taylor Award for Directors. In 2001 , Kim was appointed Senior Lecturer in Performing Arts at the University of Ballarat where her productions have included The White Rose, Sweet Charity, 42nd Street, Chekhov in Black and White, A Midsummer Night's Dream, The Night Before The Day After Tomorrow, Kiss Me Kate, All's Well That Ends Well, Richard the Third and On the Town. Synopsis: Sebastian and Viola are twins who are shipwrecked. Separately they find their way to the land of Illyria, both believing that the other had perished. Viola dresses herself as a boy (called Cesario) and enters the service of Count Orsino who asks 'him' to woo Olivia on his behalf. However Olivia falls for Cesario who has fallen in love with Orsino. A subplot involves two drunken knights, Sir Toby and Sir Andrew, a self important steward, Malvolio, a clown , a forged letter and a pair of yellow stockings. The back page of the program shows an advertisement for a performance of Eugene Iomesco's "The Killing Game"; Director Greg Stone, presented by The University of Ballarat Arts Academy for November, 2006, at The Theatreworks. Eugene Iomesco (1909-1994) was a Romanian born French playwright. The program also contains a promotion for a performance titled "Telling Tales An Evening of Subterfuge and Intrigue" presented by Ballarat National Theatre, to be held in June/July 2006 at the Courthouse Theatre.. Robin Kelly was born Robin Vandersluys in Mary Street, Kew. As a child, she sang in backyard concerts run with her brother, Leslie. The family moved to Deepdene in 1949 and Robin joined church and school choirs. Later she was to study classical singing with Stella Power, modern singing with Jack White, TV Presentation with Natalie Raine of Crawford Productions and acting/singing with Jessie Matthews. Following her victory in a talent quest at the Orama Ballroom, she was invited to join the Orama Big Band with singers Harry Cox and Arlene Forrest. She also sang with the Kerm Jones Jazz Band at Power House and with Frank Johnson's Jazz Band at Jazz Junction. Robin became resident band vocalist at the historic Federal Hotel in Collins Street with the Rudi Laquer Trio. She also sang at The Savoy Plaza with the George Cadman Trio. A year later she became resident vocalist at the Ress Oriental Hotel with the Lennie Holmes Trio. Later, Robin married pianist Peter Jones, singing under the name 'Robin Vanser' in clubs in Sydney and regional New South Wales. She was booked for a Vietnam War tour and also sang in Tahiti. Returning to Melbourne, her agent booked her to appear in shows in Tasmania including West Point Casino and Melbourne country venues. Another agent, John Bishop, booked her to do floor shows in Melbourne, including Xmas Seasons at the Hampton Hotel where she entertained audiences with her comedy and audience participation routines. In 1971, Robin Kelly retired to run her Robin Hood Antiques business in Canterbury, during which time she was married to tenor Glenn Kelly.
