The goldfields resulted in the almost complete denuding of trees for access to the gold bearing land, for firewood and for the tanning industry. The need for wood further increased with the advent of deep quartz mining that required timbers for shoring up the shafts and tunnels. At some point in time it became necessary for timber to be carted long distances to fulfil the need. Alan L. Mitchell graduated in 1935. Some of the pictures were taken while he was a student in 1934 and others in 1956 and 1965. He gathered the collection for a presentation he made about Burnley in 1967. And donated it to the Archives in 1990 for the 1991 Centenary.Box of slides in colour and black and white. Note by T.H. Kneen 8 July 1992, "The reference to the planting of this tree in "Green Grows Our Garden" is not correct. Correspondence from Charles French held in the archives indicates that the Horticultural Society of Victoria met at Burnley in 1857 and Charles French then an apprentice in a nursery at Richmond was asked to plant the tree.
