Monbulk Preserves was a major Victorian manufacturer of jams situated at 89 Camms Road, Monbulk. Operated between 1909 and 1990. The label on this jar indicates the changeover to decimal weights. Councillor William Plummer Francis (1865-1941) was Mayor of Brighton in 1911 and 1918. Born in 1865 Geelong, he was originally worked as a miner, then at Melbourne Tramway Company before becoming a greengrocer with stores in Middle Brighton and Sandringham. He became a member of the Brighton Council in 1906, elected Mayor in 1911 and then again in 1918.
