Black and white photograph of Bourke St Mall, looking west from the north side. Has two W class trams in the photo and many people. Trams have the destination of East Preston and East Brunswick Blyth St. In the background are buildings for Dunklings. Rear of photo dates it as c1975. The Mall opened in Feb. 1978 (Melbourne Tramways Timeline book - Barry George et al), so possibly soon after opening. See also Reg Item for a photo of Z1 in Bourke St prior to the Mall being built. Functional Object - Tramcar, Melbourne and Metropolitan Tramways Board (MMTB), Tram 1029, 1956
A four motor bogie drop centre combination tram of the Melbourne W7 class No. 1029, built at Preston Workshops during 1956, entered service on 1/2/1956. Fitted with sliding doors, Remote Control equipment. See webpage btm.org.au/trams/504.html Spent it appears all its life at Preston or North Fitzroy Depot. Transported to Newport Workshops during 1995. More to come here. Functional object - Ticket Wallet, Melbourne & Metropolitan Tramways Board (MMTB), Journal or ticket record wallet, 1920c to late 1950's
Used to hold the ticket records or trip journals of a conductor. Originally stamped for use by North Melbourne cable tram depot, no. 101 and then "No. 67" or on rear No. 205 with other numbers stamped out. Has many nicks in the leather to hold elastic bands. Probably made when the MMTB introduced paper tickets onto the cable trams. On the inside is the Fare Section table for East Preston - City (via St Georges Rd and Latrobe St") - sheet 17 - which matches the 1955 Sections and Fares Book - see Reg Item 1207. For another similar example see item 8349.Demonstrates a cable tram era leather journal cover used tor record trips and tickets sold.Journal or ticket record wallet, consisting of two very heavy and hard pieces of brown coloured leather joined by a sewn (brown cotton) lighter piece of leather to form foldable wallet.
