Clothing - Clothing. lady's nylon gloves 'Simplex', c1960
These gloves are made from a warp-knitted cotton fabric called ' Simplex'. Cotton simplex is stronger than jersey (another knitted fabric) and does not fray. This makes it perfect for hand-sewn gloves. The gloves were made in Hong Kong then as now a place where fashions can be made cheaply because the cost of labour is inexpensive. Ladies' gloves for formal and semi-formal wear come in three lengths for women: wrist, elbow, and opera or full-length (over the elbow, usually reaching to the biceps but sometimes to the full length of the arm). In the late 19thC and early 20thC Gloves were expected to be worn for both daytime and evening wear with most types of outfits. The family of Carole Pedersen-Green were early settlers in Moorabbin Shire and their Danish heritage is an example of the many nationalities who lived and worked there.A pair of lady's short cream nylon gloves ' Simplex' Size 7 C 1960SIMPLEX NYLON 7clothing, gloves, formal wear, craftwork, lace making, dress etiquette, satin, silk, simplex material, hong kong, moorabbin, bentleigh, cheltenham, fashion, denmark, pedersen-green carole, green carole -

... Sending postcards to family and friends including short... melbourne Sending postcards to family and friends including short ...Sending postcards to family and friends including short messages was a common form of communication in the early 20th century from 1905 to the 1940s. Many were collected and kept in albums. This scene is viewed looking north along Main Road from near Bridge Street. The old Baker’s shop (Burgoyne’s store) on the corner of York is on the right. Also visible is the footpath dug by hand c.1906 between Yoirk Street and Bridge Street. On the left is ‘Derril’ or more commonly known as the Gahan House after it was purchased by Walter Ernest and Alice Miriam Gahan in 1924, on the western side of Main Road near the present-day site of Shillinglaw Cottage where they remained till about 1960 when Walter died. The house was demolished in 1968 during the widening of Main Road. In the distance on the bend is the Shillinglaw cottage with the Shillinglaw trees out front of the cottage. On the eastern side at the top of the hill (visible immediately to the left of the bakery) is the new St Mary’s Catholic Church on Henry Street near Main Road. The church site was relocated c.1912 from further south along Main Road (near Wingrove Cottage) in order to be more central to the congregation following the shifting of the township away from Little Eltham and closer to the railway station. It was subsequently destroyed by fire in 1961. On the back of the postcard is written: Printed Post Empire Care - correspondence - Address only - stamp Written in ink: 15 ? 1920 Many happy of the day I hope you and ? will have a very pleasant trip ? a great time when you reach England. ? & best wishes from your sincere friend E Harper? This photo forms part of a collection of photographs gathered by the Shire of Eltham for their centenary project book,"Pioneers and Painters: 100 years of the Shire of Eltham" by Alan Marshall (1971). Camera Box Brownie, 4/8/1925
This item represents a period in time when there was the start by manufacturing industry for targeting the medium to lower socio and economic strata of the purchasing public. It was the beginning of cheaper mass produced items for the non professional (photographer in this instance) recreational minded public. The availability of low cost items was required by an ever increasing population hungering for the "do it yourself" amateur. This camera was owned by Margaret (Peg) Shefford nee Turner, who retired to Mount Beauty in the mid 1980s. The camera was purchased in 1920 and used up to the 1940's when her her daughter, Midge Clooney used it. When the Shefford family emigrated from England to Australia (1953), it was used to take photos of the ship voyage. This item is a Campfire Box Brownie. Model "F". It is a black vinyl covered tin box shell. It has a short leather hand strap (110mm) (stamped "BROWNIE") on the top side of the box, fastened by a metal stud at each end. There are two clasps holding the front and rear sides. Viewer (photo frame number) and lens (apertures) are on opposite sides.Stamped within a circular section on the back section is "No 2 BROWNIE" underneath,"MODEL F" in smaller letters "MADE IN CANADA BY CANADIAN KODAK Co., Limited, TORONTO, ONT". a smaller circle within has "USE KODAK FILM No_ 120"portable camera, photography, hobby, low cost camera
