One of the oldest associations in Castlemaine is looking for new members. The Old Castlemaine Schoolboys Association was formed in the year 1912, making it 84 years in operation. Anyone over 30 years old and who is an Old Boy who attended a school within 15 kilometre radius of the Castlemaine Post office - St Mary's, the High School, Technical College, (now known as Castlemaine Secondary Colleges) is eligible for membership. The Association is planning a dinner and "get together" to talk about old times and rekindle friendships which existed all those years ago. This reunion is always held on the second Saturday in October, at the Castlemaine Town Hall Starting at 6:30pm. Another Project of the Castlemaine old Boys' Association undertakes is the supply of books to local school Libraries.

He is the priest on the LHS of this large school photo. This bodice belonged to Mary Crombie, an early Victorian dentist, who lived in Brighton while she was studying at the Australian College of Dentistry in the mid-1900s, and later returned to the area in her retirement from 1949-1971. Mary Margaret Crombie (1884-1971) was born at Coan Downs Station near Walgett, northern New South Wales, where her father Henry was station manager. After Henry’s untimely death in 1895, Mary and her mother loved for a few years with family members in St Kilda, before moving into a cottage of their own, ‘Rosewood’, at 42 Asling Street, Brighton around 1899. From here, Mary attended Oberwyl Ladies College in St Kilda and later the Australian College of Dentistry, one of only a few women to study dental surgery at the time. She was apprenticed to Ada Tovell (1865-1932), one of Victoria’s first female dentists, who had her own practice in Collins Street. Mary graduated in 1907 and the following year moved with he mother to Yarram in South Gippsland, where she took over the running of a practice owned by Sale dentist Charles Trood, eventually purchasing it from him in 1915. Speaking to a Brighton newspaper in 1961, Mary said she believed that she was the first woman to start a dental practice in Gippsland. For some locals, this took a little getting used to: “Many were amazed, and had some misgivings, when they found that the local dentist was a woman,” she said. “I always remember a huge farmer (he was about 6 ft. 4 in.), who had fortified himself at the local hotel to face the ordeal of visiting the dentist. He almost turned and ran when he saw me. … He was still more amazed when I pulled out his tooth without undue trouble.” The farmer was the best advertisement she could have asked for, telling everybody about the diminutive lady dentist who had calmly extracted his tooth. Mary practiced in Yarram until her retirement in 1949. After selling her practice she returned to Brighton, where she spent the last two decades of her life residing at 25 Oak Grove. Following her death in 1971, her relatives in Brighton donated a number of items from her home to BHS.Black satin bodice, boned, with black faceted glass buttons down the front. High collar. This home-made nightgown was part of Mary Ethel McIntyre (nee Lindsay)'s wedding trousseau. Mary married Robert McIntyre on 29 August 1929 at St Andrews Church, Korumburra. The couple moved to Lang-Lang, then Mentone. The nightgown was donated by Mary's daughter-in-law, Elaine McIntyre (nee Wyatt), who was born and raised in Brighton. She was born in Padua House and attended Brighton Primary School and Hampton High School.Cream short-sleeved nightgown with lace collar and cuffs. Attached fabric sash at waist. He served as Governor-General of Australia from 1945 to 1947, the only member of the British royal family to hold the post. Princess Alice, Duchess of Gloucester, GCB, CI, GCVO, GBE (born Alice Christabel Montagu Douglas Scott; 25 December 1901 – 29 October 2004) was the wife of Prince Henry, Duke of Gloucester, the third son of King George V and Queen Mary. She was the mother of Prince William of Gloucester and Prince Richard, Duke of Gloucester. Annie Mary (Mollie) Sibson was the youngest daughter of Mr and Mrs J Sibson of Milwa Gippsland. Mollie held the position of paid nursing sister at Bendigo Hospital until her marriage in 1933 to Eugene Sandner, although Mollie did continue to hold an unpaid position on the Board of Management of the Hospital for many years afterwards. The annual ball would have been a popular event at which men and women could socialise. Mollie Sandner served as Mayoress of Bendigo from 1978 - 1979 at which time her husband served as Mayor.Printed, bi fold green card with attached green cotton used by Molly Sander to record dance partners at the Hospital Auxiliary Ball. J. H. Carolin was active in municipal politics from 1886 - 1913. He began his career in Kyneton and arrived in Bendigo in 1879. Councillor Carolin became Mayor for the first time from 1889 - 90 and then again in 1907 -08. John Paul Carolin married Mary Corcoran in 1861and together had 10 children. Prior to the election of female Councillors and Mayors in the 1960’s, the Lady Mayoress role was one of the few ways women could officially undertake civic duties. Mayoresses made important contributions to their local communities through their charity work and as ambassadors for their region on a state and federal level. They also undertook some Mayoral duties on occasions when their husband was unavailable. Annie Mary (Mollie) Sibson was born in England in 1904 and worked as a nursing sister at Bendigo Base Hospital until her marriage to Alec Sandner in 1933. Mollie was an active member of the community and was particularly interested in raising the participation of girls in sports and the lack of competitive sports opportunities for girls led Mollie to create an inter school tennis competition in 1944. The Mollie Sandner Cup continues to be played today and Mollie was recognised by the Sportswomens' Association of Bendigo for her contribution to women's sports.
