The work of the Australian Survey Corps is to make maps for the Army. At the outbreak of war very little of the mainland had been mapped, especially the northern parts. The best maps in existence of the N.T. coast in Dec "41 were those made by Matt Flinders in 1801 -1802. The Army soon got out new maps of all important areas including much of the inland. Later it was decided to bring the complete coastline up to date. Several parties put in between them six months on the coast during the dry season of "45 but a couple more months would be needed to complete the program when the "wet" interrupted the work. A small section from Buckingham Bay - Groote Eylandt was still untouched and this diary covers that section of the N.T. Coast. A survey party of four men was chosen who were to be transported from place to place by the AK121 Aroetta - a ketch of 25 tons belonging to an army unit called N.T. Coastal Recce whose work it was to patrol the coast and as well do air - sea rescue. The survey party: Lieut Jack Worsley (the Loot) Sgt Jack Love, Spr Jack Cook, Spr Pat Hede. This set of map prints was assembled as a training aid. The collection is a complete set of individual color prints of each colour used on the final printed maps for each map Joint Operations Graphic (JOG) JOG Ground and JOG Air versions. This map series was produced in two versions to help coordinate military Ground Operations and Air Operations. The ground users required that heights and measurements were in Metres, whilst air users required height information in Feet for altimeters. The Air Version also contained more Aeronautical information including safe flying height information called Maximum Elevation Figures (MEF). Later printing of JOG incorporated printing in just four colours Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and Black (CMYK). This photo of WO2 Don Taylor and D-SVY COL Frank Buckland OBE was taken during a tour by D-SVY through Topographic Squadron at the Army Headquarters Survey Regiment, Fortuna, Bendigo circa 1971. Wild B8 Aviograph Stereoplotters are visible inside the windows in the background. BRIG Frank Buckland OBE served in the Australian Army from 01 June 1938 to 31st of October 1972. LTCOL Frank Buckland was the CO of the Army Headquarters Survey Regiment from 1962 to 1965. After promotion to COL Buckland was appointed as Director of the Royal Australian Survey Corps from March 1967 to August 1972. COL Buckland was promoted to Brigadier (retired) to the honorary position as Colonel Commandant from January 1973 to January 1976. WO2 Don Taylor served in the Australian Army from 24th October 1960 to 31st December 1987 and ended his service as a commissioned officer and reached the rank of Major.
